Exclusive J/ψJ/ψ and ΥΥ production in high energy pppp and ppPb collisions

We present a formalism for determining the cross section for exclusive heavy vector meson production (J/ψ,ΥJ/ψ, Υ) as a function of rapidity, in both high energy proton-proton and proton-heavy ion collisions, at next-to-leading order in QCD. We compare and contrast the production in pppp and ppPb collisions and show how data for these processes can give information on the low xx gluon distribution of the proton and heavy ions at a range of different scales.

Towards the phenomenological implications of the Physical Scheme in PDF fits

We describe the impact on PDF extractions of the 'Physical Scheme', a heavy-quark mass scheme that accounts for the effects of intrinsic heavy-quarks and provides a way to smoothly transition over the heavy-quark thresholds. The modifications made to the conventional MS‾\overline{\text{MS}} scheme splitting functions and αsα_s running will be emphasised, collectively giving rise to a new Physical Scheme PDF evolution. We also present the analytic formulae for the DIS coefficient functions at NLO in the Physical Scheme and show results for the F2F_2 charm DIS structure function. Motivated by the upcoming statistics from the High-Luminosity LHC, embodying the next phase of the precision physics era at the LHC, as well as in time from the Electron-Ion collider, we end by highlighting the need to quantify the effect of these corrections on PDF extractions over a wide range of momentum fractions xx and scales Q2Q^2 and propose the use of xFitter\texttt{xFitter} for doing so.

Predictions of exclusive ΥΥ photoproduction at the LHC and future colliders

The cross section for exclusive ΥΥ ultraperipheral photoproduction at present and future colliders is determined using the low xx gluon PDF extracted from an analysis of exclusive J/ψJ/ψ measurements performed at HERA and the LHC. Predictions are given at next-to-leading order in collinear factorisation over a wide γpγp centre-of-mass energy range, calculated assuming the non-relativistic approximation for the ΥΥ wave function, and with skewing corrections incorporated.

Very low xx gluon density determined by LHCb exclusive J/ψJ/ψ data

The low xx behaviour of the gluon density xg(x,μ2)xg(x,μ^2) at scale μ2=2.4μ^2=2.4 GeV2^2 is determined using exclusive J/ψJ/ψ production data from HERA and LHCb within the framework of collinear factorisation at next-to-leading order (NLO). It is shown that in the interval 3×10−6<x<10−33\times 10^{-6} < x <10^{-3} the gluon distribution function grows as xg(x,μ2)∝x−λxg(x,μ^2)\propto x^{-λ} with λ=0.135±0.006λ=0.135\pm 0.006 . The impact this experimental data will have for the global parton distribution function (PDF) analyses in this low xx domain is quantified. No indication in favour of parton density saturation is observed.

How to include exclusive J/ψJ/ψ production data in global PDF analyses

We compare the cross section for exclusive J/ψJ/ψ photoproduction calculated at NLO in the collinear factorization approach with HERA and LHCb data. Using the optimum scale formalism together with the subtraction of the low kt<Q0k_t<Q_0 contribution from the NLO coefficient function to avoid double counting we show that the existing global parton distribution functions (PDFs) are consistent with the data within their uncertainties. However, at low xx the uncertainties of the present global PDFs are large. On the other hand, the accuracy of the LHCb data are rather good. Therefore, these data provide the possibility to directly measure the gluon PDF over the very large interval of xx, 10−6<x<10−210^{-6}<x<10^{-2}, at a fixed low scale.
