Computing tropical varieties over fields with valuation

We show how tropical varieties of ideals I over a field K with non-trivial valuation can be traced back to tropical varieties of ideals in R[[t]][x] over some dense subring R in its ring of integers. Moreover, for homogeneous ideals, we present algorithms on how the latter can be computed in finite time, provided that generators are polynomial in t. While doing so, we also comment on the computation of the Groebner polytope structure and p-adic Groebner bases using our framework. All algorithms solely rely on existing standard basis techniques.

Standard Bases in mixed Power Series and Polynomial Rings over Rings

In this paper we study standard bases for submodules of a mixed power series and polynomial ring $R[[t_1,\ldots,t_m]][x_1,\ldots,x_n]^s$ respectively of their localization with respect to a $t$-local monomial ordering for a certain class of noetherian rings $R$. The main steps are to prove the existence of a division with remainder generalizing and combining the division theorems of Grauert--Hironaka and Mora and to generalize the Buchberger criterion. Everything else then translates naturally. Setting either $m=0$ or $n=0$ we get standard bases for polynomial rings respectively for power series rings over $R$ as a special case.

Tropical curves with a singularity in a fixed point

In this paper, we study tropicalisations of families of curves with a singularity in a fixed point. The tropicalisation of such a family is a linear tropical variety. We describe its maximal dimensional cones using results about linear tropical varieties from Ardila and Klivans and from Feichtner and Sturmfels. We show that a singularity tropicalises either to a vertex of higher valence or of higher multiplicity, or to an edge of higher weight. We then classify maximal dimensional types of singular tropical curves. For those, the singularity is either a crossing of two edges, or a 3-valent vertex of multiplicity 3, or a point on an edge of weight 2 whose distances to the neighbouring vertices satisfy a certain metric condition. We also study algebraic preimages of our singular tropical curves.

Tropical surface singularities

In this paper, we study tropicalisations of singular surfaces in toric threefolds. We completely classify singular tropical surfaces of maximal-dimensional type, show that they can generically have only finitely many singular points, and describe all possible locations of singular points. More precisely, we show that singular points must be either vertices, or generalized midpoints and baricenters of certain faces of singular tropical surfaces, and, in some cases, there may be additional metric restrictions to faces of singular tropical surfaces.

Invariants of Hypersurface Singularities in Positive Characteristic

We study singularities f in K[[x_1,...,x_n]] over an algebraically closed field K of arbitrary characteristic with respect to right respectively contact equivalence, and we establish that the finiteness of the Milnor respectively the Tjurina number is equivalent to finite determinacy. We give improved bounds for the degree of determinacy in positive characteristic. Moreover, we consider different non-degeneracy conditions of Kouchnirenko, Wall and Beelen-Pellikaan in positive characteristic, and we show that planar Newton non-degenerate singularities satisfy Milnor's formula mu=2 delta-r+1. This implies the absence of wild vanishing cycles in the sense of Deligne.

Normal Forms of Hypersurface Singularities in Positive Characteristic

The main purpose of this article is to lay the foundations for a classification of isolated hypersurface singularities in positive characteristic. Although our article is in the spirit of Arnol'd who classified real an complex hypersurfaces in the 1970's with respect to right equivalence, several new phenomena occur in positive characteristic. Already the notion of isolated singularity is different for right resp. contact equivalence over fields of characteristic other than zero. The heart of this paper consists of the study of different notions of non-degeneracy and the associated piecewise filtrations induced by the Newton diagram of a power series f. We introduce the conditions AC and AAC which modify and generalise the conditions A and AA of Arnol'd resp. Wall and which allow the classification with respect to contact equivalence in any characteristic. Using this we deduce normal forms and rather sharp determinacy bounds for f with respect to right and contact equivalence. We apply this to classify hypersurface singularities of low modality in positive characteristic.

The tropical $j$-invariant

If (Q,A) is a marked polygon with one interior point, then a general polynomial f in K[x,y] with support A defines an elliptic curve C on the toric surface X_A. If K has a non-archimedean valuation into the real numbers we can tropicalize C to get a tropical curve Trop(C). If the Newton subdivision induced by f is a triangulation, then Trop(C) will be a graph of genus one and we show that the lattice length of the cycle of that graph is the negative of the valuation of the j-invariant of C.
