Tkwant: a software package for time-dependent quantum transport

Tkwant is a Python package for the simulation of quantum nanoelectronics devices to which external time-dependent perturbations are applied. Tkwant is an extension of the Kwant package (https://kwant-project.org/) and can handle the same types of systems: discrete tight-binding-like models that consist of an arbitrary central region connected to semi-infinite electrodes. The problem is genuinely many-body even in the absence of interactions and is treated within the non-equilibrium Keldysh formalism. Examples of Tkwant applications include the propagation of plasmons generated by voltage pulses, propagation of excitations in the quantum Hall regime, spectroscopy of Majorana fermions in semiconducting nanowires, current-induced skyrmion motion in spintronic devices, multiple Andreev reflection, Floquet topological insulators, thermoelectric effects, and more. The code has been designed to be easy to use and modular. Tkwant is free software distributed under a BSD license and can be found at https://tkwant.kwant-project.org/.

Strong competition between $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order and $d$-wave charge order along the diagonal direction in a two-dimensional hot spot model

We study the fate of the so-called $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order that breaks both time-reversal and parity symmetries in a two-dimensional hot spot model with antiferromagnetically mediated interactions, using Fermi surfaces relevant to the phenomenology of the cuprate superconductors. We start from a three-band Emery model describing the hopping of holes in the CuO$_{2}$ plane that includes two hopping parameters $t_{pp}$ and $t_{pd}$, local on-site Coulomb interactions $U_{d}$ and $U_{p}$ and nearest-neighbor $V_{pd}$ couplings between the fermions in the copper [Cu$(3d_{x^{2}-y^{2}})$] and oxygen [O$(2p_{x})$ and O$(2p_{y})$] orbitals. By focusing on the lowest-energy band, we proceed to decouple the local interaction $U_{d}$ of the Cu orbital in the spin channel using a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation to arrive at the interacting part of the so-called spin-fermion model. We also decouple the nearest-neighbor interaction $V_{pd}$ to introduce the order parameter of the $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order. In this way, we are able to construct a consistent mean-field theory that describes the strong competition between the composite order parameter made of a quadrupole-density-wave and $d$-wave pairing fluctuations proposed in Efetov \emph{et al.} [Nat. Phys. \textbf{9}, 442 (2013)] with the $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order parameter that is argued to be relevant for explaining important aspects of the physics of the pseudogap phase displayed in the underdoped cuprates.

Strong-coupling phases of the anisotropic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation

We study the anisotropic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation using nonperturbative renormalization group methods. In contrast to a previous analysis in the weak-coupling regime we find the strong coupling fixed point corresponding to the isotropic rough phase to be always locally stable and unaffected by the anisotropy even at non-integer dimensions. Apart from the well-known weak coupling and the now well established isotropic strong coupling behavior, we find an anisotropic strong coupling fixed point for nonlinear couplings of opposite signs at non-integer dimensions.

The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with spatially correlated noise: a unified picture from nonperturbative renormalization group

We investigate the scaling regimes of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in the presence of spatially correlated noise with power law decay $D(p) \sim p^{-2ρ}$ in Fourier space, using a nonperturbative renormalization group approach. We determine the full phase diagram of the system as a function of $ρ$ and the dimension $d$. In addition to the weak-coupling part of the diagram, which agrees with the results from Refs. [Europhys. Lett. 47, 14 (1999), Eur. Phys. J. B 9, 491 (1999)], we find the two fixed points describing the short-range (SR) and long-range (LR) dominated strong-coupling phases. In contrast with a suggestion in the references cited above, we show that, for all values of $ρ$, there exists a unique strong-coupling SR fixed point that can be continuously followed as a function of $d$. We show in particular that the existence and the behavior of the LR fixed point do not provide any hint for 4 being the upper critical dimension of the KPZ equation with SR noise.

Nonperturbative renormalization group for the stationary Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation: scaling functions and amplitude ratios in 1+1, 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions

We investigate the strong-coupling regime of the stationary Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation for interfaces growing on a substrate of dimension d=1, 2, and 3 using a nonperturbative renormalization group (NPRG) approach. We compute critical exponents, correlation and response functions, extract the related scaling functions and calculate universal amplitude ratios. We work with a simplified implementation of the second-order (in the response field) approximation proposed in a previous work [PRE 84, 061128 (2011) and Erratum 86, 019904 (2012)], which greatly simplifies the frequency sector of the NPRG flow equations, while keeping a nontrivial frequency dependence for the 2-point functions. The one-dimensional scaling function obtained within this approach compares very accurately with the scaling function obtained from the full second-order NPRG equations and with the exact scaling function. Furthermore, the approach is easily applicable to higher dimensions and we provide scaling functions and amplitude ratios in d=2 and d=3. We argue that our ansatz is reliable up to d \simeq 3.5.

Thermalization of magnons in yttrium-iron garnet: nonequilibrium functional renormalization group approach

Using a nonequilibrium functional renormalization group (FRG) approach we calculate the time evolution of the momentum distribution of a magnon gas in contact with a thermal phonon bath. As a cutoff for the FRG procedure we use a hybridization parameter Λ giving rise to an artificial damping of the phonons. Within our truncation of the FRG flow equations the time evolution of the magnon distribution is obtained from a rate equation involving cutoff-dependent nonequilibrium self-energies, which in turn satisfy FRG flow equations depending on cutoff-dependent transition rates. Our approach goes beyond the Born collision approximation and takes the feedback of the magnons on the phonons into account. We use our method to calculate the thermalization of a quasi two-dimensional magnon gas in the magnetic insulator yttrium-iron garnet after a highly excited initial state has been generated by an external microwave field. We obtain good agreement with recent experiments.

Non-equilibrium time evolution of bosons from the functional renormalization group

We develop a functional renormalization group approach to obtain the time evolution of the momentum distribution function of interacting bosons out of equilibrium. Using an external out-scattering rate as flow parameter, we derive formally exact renormalization group flow equations for the non-equilibrium self-energies in the Keldysh basis. A simple perturbative truncation of these flow equations leads to an approximate solution of the quantum Boltzmann equation which does not suffer from secular terms and gives accurate results even for long times. We demonstrate this explicitly within a simple exactly solvable toy model describing a quartic oscillator with off-diagonal pairing terms.

Parametric pumping and kinetics of magnons in dipolar ferromagnets

The time evolution of magnons subject to a time-dependent microwave field is usually described within the so-called "S-theory", where kinetic equations for the distribution function are obtained within the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation. To explain the recent observation of "Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons" in an external microwave field [Demokritov et al., Nature 443, 430 (2006)], we extend the "S-theory" to include the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the time-dependent expectation values of the magnon creation and annihilation operators. We explicitly solve the resulting coupled equations within a simple approximation where only a single condensed mode is retained. We also re-examine the usual derivation of an effective boson model from a realistic spin model for yttrium-iron garnet films and argue that in the parallel pumping geometry (where both the static and the time-dependent magnetic field are parallel to the macroscopic magnetization) the time-dependent Zeemann energy cannot give rise to magnon condensation.
