Vector interaction enhanced bag model for astrophysical applications

For quark matter studies in astrophysics the thermodynamic bag model (tdBAG) has been widely used. Despite its success it fails to account for various phenomena expected from Quantum-Chromo-Dynamics (QCD). We suggest a straightforward extension of tdBAG in order to take the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry and the influence of vector interactions explicitly into account. As for tdBAG the model mimics confinement in a phenomenological approach. It is based on an analysis of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model at finite density. Furthermore, we demonstrate how NJL and bag models in this regime follow from the more general and QCD based framework of Dyson-Schwinger (DS) equations in medium by assuming a simple gluon contact interaction. Based on our simple and novel model, we construct quark hadron hybrid equations of state (EoS) and study systematically chiral and deconfinement phase transitions, the appearance of $s$-quarks and the role of vector interaction. We further study these aspects for matter in beta-equilibrium at zero temperature, with particular focus on the current ~2 solar masses maximum mass constraint for neutron stars. Our approach indicates that the currently only theoretical evidence for the hypothesis of stable strange matter is an artifact of tdBAG and results from neglecting the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry.

Compact Stars, Heavy Ion Collisions, and Possible Lessons For QCD at Finite Densities

Large neutron star masses as the recently measured $1.97\pm0.04$ M$_\odot$ for PSR J1614-2230 provide a valuable lower limit on the stiffness of the equation of state of dense, nuclear and quark matter. Complementary, the analysis of the elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions suggests an upper limit on the EoS stiffness. We illustrate how this dichotomy permits to constrain parameters of effective EoS models which otherwise could not be derived unambiguously from first principles.

Cold quarks in medium: an equation of state

We derive a compact, semi-algebraic expression for the cold quark matter equation of state (EoS) in a covariant model that exhibits coincident deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoring transitions in-medium. Along the way we obtain algebraic expressions for: the number- and scalar-density distributions in both the confining Nambu and deconfined Wigner phases; and the vacuum-pressure difference between these phases, which defines a bag constant. The confining interaction materially alters the distribution functions from those of a Fermi gas and consequently has a significant impact on the model's thermodynamic properties, which is apparent in the EoS.

Exploring the light-quark interaction

Two basic motivations for an upgraded JLab facility are the needs: to determine the essential nature of light-quark confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB); and to understand nucleon structure and spectroscopy in terms of QCD's elementary degrees of freedom. During the next ten years a programme of experiment and theory will be conducted that can address these questions. We present a Dyson-Schwinger equation perspective on this effort with numerous illustrations, amongst them: an interpretation of string-breaking; a symmetry-preserving truncation for mesons; the nucleon's strangeness sigma-term; and the neutron's charge distribution.
