Charge dependence of mesons with flavored contact-interaction couplings

Effective interaction models of quantum chromodynamics, based on quark degrees of freedom, have been successfully employed to compute the properties of a large array of ground and excited meson and baryon states, along with their electromagnetic form factors, distribution functions and thermal behavior. Amongst them, the contact-interaction model, while non-renormalizable, implements confinement, satisfies Lorentz covariance and correctly describes chiral symmetry and its dynamical breaking pattern. Original studies focused on the light hadron sector in the isospin limit and were thereafter extended to heavy mesons and baryons. The strong effective couplings, as well as infrared and ultraviolet regulators, are flavor-dependent model parameters adjusted to reproduce hadronic observables. In contrast, in this study we combine SU(4) flavor-symmetry breaking couplings, obtained from one-loop vacuum polarization amplitudes in the presence of background constituent quark currents, with the contact-interaction model. This allows us to reduce the number of mass-dimensioned parameters and to consistently relate all flavored couplings to a single mass scale, while the masses and weak decay constants of the pions, kaons, $D$ and $D_s$ mesons are in good agreement with average reference values. Allowing for realistic isospin breaking, $m_d/m_u = 1.7$, in conjunction with the effect of the flavored couplings, leads to a mass splitting, $m_{π^+}- m_{π^0} \approx 0.3$ MeV, that agrees with lattice QCD values. For the kaons, the mass difference is $m_{K^0}- m_{K^\pm} \approx 2.3$ MeV, whereas $m_{D^\pm} - m_{D^0} \approx 0.5$ MeV and the $η_c$ is 6\% lighter than the experimental mass.

Dressed quark-gluon vertex form factors from gauge symmetry

We present preliminary results on the longitudinal $and$ transverse form factors of the quark-gluon vertex as functions of the incoming and outgoing quark momenta and an angle $θ=2π/3$ between them. The expressions for these form factors were previously derived from Slavnov-Taylor identities, gauge covariance and multiplicative renormalizability that firmly constrain the fermion-boson vertex.

Contemporary continuum QCD approaches to excited hadrons

Amongst the bound states produced by the strong interaction, radially excited meson and nucleon states offer an important phenomenological window into the long-range behavior of the coupling constant in Quantum Chromodynamics. We here report on some technical details related to the computation of the bound state's eigenvalue spectrum in the framework of Bethe-Salpeter and Faddeev equations.

Excited hadrons and the analytical structure of bound-state interaction kernels

We highlight Hermiticity issues in bound-state equations whose kernels are subject to a highly asymmetric mass and momentum distribution and whose eigenvalue spectrum becomes complex for radially excited states. We trace back the presence of imaginary components in the eigenvalues and wave functions to truncation artifacts and suggest how they can be eliminated in the case of charmed mesons. The solutions of the gap equation in the complex plane, which play a crucial role in the analytic structure of the Bethe-Salpeter kernel, are discussed for several interaction models and qualitatively and quantitatively compared to analytic continuations by means of complex-conjugate pole models fitted to real solutions.

Completing the picture of the Roper resonance

We employ a continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory to predict a range of properties of the proton's radial excitation and thereby unify them with those of numerous other hadrons. Our analysis indicates that the nucleon's first radial excitation is the Roper resonance. It consists of a core of three dressed-quarks, which expresses its valence-quark content and whose charge radius is 80% larger than the proton analogue. That core is complemented by a meson cloud, which reduces the observed Roper mass by roughly 20%. The meson cloud materially affects long-wavelength characteristics of the Roper electroproduction amplitudes but the quark core is revealed to probes with $Q^2 \gtrsim 3 m_N^2$.

Pseudoscalar mesons with symmetric bound state vertex functions on the light front

We study the electromagnetic form factors, decay constants and charge radii of the pion and kaon within the framework of light-front field theory formalism where we use an ansatz for the quark-meson interaction bound-state function which is symmetric under exchange of quark and antiquark momentum. The above mentioned observables are evaluated for the $+$ component of the electromagnetic current, $J^+$, in the Breit frame. We also check the invariance of these observables in other frames, whereby both the valance and the non-valence contributions have to be taken into account, and study the sensitivity of the electromagnetic form factors and charge radius to the model's parameters; namely, the quark masses, $m_u=m_d$, $m_{\bar s}$, and the regulator mass, $m_R$. It is found that after a fine tuning of the regulator mass, i.e. $m_R=0.6$ GeV, the model is suitable to fit the available experimental data within the theoretical uncertainties of both the pion and kaon.

Pion structure in the nuclear medium

Using the light-front pion wave function based on a Bethe-Salpeter amplitude model, we study the properties of the pion in symmetric nuclear matter. The pion model we adopt is well constrained by previous studies to explain the pion properties in vacuum. In order to consistently incorporate the constituent up and down quarks of the pion immersed in symmetric nuclear matter, we use the quark-meson coupling model, which has been widely applied to various hadronic and nuclear phenomena in a nuclear medium with success. We predict the in-medium modifications of the pion lectromagnetic form factor, charge radius and weak decay constant in symmetric nuclear matter.

Ward identities, $\bm{ B\to V}$ transition form factors and applications

Long distance effects are studied in the rare exclusive semileptonic $B_{(d,s)}\to V \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays, where $V$ denotes a $K^*$ or $ϕ$ meson. The form factors, which describe the meson transition amplitudes in the effective Hamiltonian approach, are calculated by means of Ward identities, experimental constraints and extrapolated within a general vector meson dominance framework. These form factors are then compared to the ones obtained in Lattice QCD simulations, with Light Cone Sum Rules and a Dyson-Schwinger equation approach. Additionally, the $B_d\to K^* \ell^+ \ell^-$ and $B_s\to ϕ\ell^+ \ell^- $ branching ratios are computed and the differential branching fractions are given as a function of the squared-momentum transfer.

Electromagnetic Structure of the Pion

In this work, we analyze the electromagnetic structure of the pion. We calculate its electromagnetic radius and electromagnetic form factor in low and intermediate momentum range. Such observables are determined by means of a theoretical model that takes into account the constituent quark and antiquark of the pion within the formalism of light-front field theory. In particular, we consider a nonsymmetrical vertex in this model, with which we calculate the electromagnetic form factor of the pion in an optimized way, so that we obtain a value closer to the experimental charge radius of the pion. The theoretical calculations are also compared with the most recent experimental data involving the pion electromagnetic form factor and the results show very good agreement.

Pion and kaon elastic form factors in a refined light-front model

Within the framework of light-front field theory, we reassess the electromagnetic form factors of the pion and kaon. Comparison with experiment is made for the full range of momentum transfer, q^2<0, including recent data. The light-front model's single regulator mass, m_R, of the \bar qq bound-state vertex function is initially adjusted to reproduce the weak decay constants, f_π and f_K, and both meson's charge radii, r_π and r_K. We study the behavior of these observables under variation of the quark masses and find an optimized parameter set, m_u=m_d, m_s and m_R, for which they are in sensibly better agreement with experiment than in a previous analysis; a feature also observed for the elastic form factors, in particular at small q^2. This model refinement is important in view of an extension to vector and heavy-light mesons.

The Electromagnetic Form Factor of the Kaon in the Light-Front Approach

The kaon electromagnetic form factor is calculated within a light-front constituent quark model (LFCQM). The electromagnetic components of the current are extracted from the Feynman triangle diagram within the light-front approach. We also obtain the electroweak decay constant and the charge radius for the kaon in the light-front approach. In this work, the kaon observables are calculated and a fairly good agreement is obtained with a very higher accuracy when compared with the experimental data.

Collective perspective on advances in Dyson-Schwinger Equation QCD

We survey contemporary studies of hadrons and strongly interacting quarks using QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations, addressing: aspects of confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking; the hadron spectrum; hadron elastic and transition form factors, from small- to large-Q^2; parton distribution functions; the physics of hadrons containing one or more heavy quarks; and properties of the quark gluon plasma.

Heavy-quark symmetries in the light of nonperturbative QCD approaches

We critically review the validity of heavy-quark spin and flavor symmetries in heavy-light decay constants, form factors and effective couplings obtained within a nonperturbative framework, the ingredients of which are all motivated by Dyson-Schwinger equations studies of QCD. Along the way, we make new predictions for two effective nonphysical couplings: g_{DsDK} = 24.1+2.5/-1.6 and g_{BsBK} = 33.3+4.0/-3.7.

Flavor SU(4) breaking between effective couplings

Using a framework in which all elements are constrained by Dyson-Schwinger equation studies in QCD, and therefore incorporates a consistent, direct and simultaneous description of light- and heavy-quarks and the states they constitute, we analyze the accuracy of SU(4)-flavor symmetry relations between πρπ, KρK and DρD couplings. Such relations are widely used in phenomenological analyses of the interactions between matter and charmed mesons. We find that whilst SU(3)-flavor symmetry is accurate to 20%, SU(4) relations underestimate the DρD coupling by a factor of five.

preprint2010arXiv

Strong D* -> D+pi and B* -> B+pi couplings

We compute g_{D* D pi} and g_{B* B pi} using a framework in which all elements are constrained by Dyson-Schwinger equation studies of QCD, and therefore incorporates a consistent, direct and simultaneous description of light- and heavy-quarks and the states they may constitute. We link these couplings with the heavy-light-meson leptonic decay constants, and thereby obtain g_{D* D pi}=15.9+2.1/-1.0 and g_{B* B pi}=30.0+3.2/-1.4. From the latter we infer \hat-g_B=0.37+0.04/-0.02. A comparison between g_{D* D pi} and g_{B* B pi} indicates that when the c-quark is a system's heaviest constituent, Lambda_{QCD}/m_c-corrections are not under good control.

Exploring the light-quark interaction

Two basic motivations for an upgraded JLab facility are the needs: to determine the essential nature of light-quark confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB); and to understand nucleon structure and spectroscopy in terms of QCD's elementary degrees of freedom. During the next ten years a programme of experiment and theory will be conducted that can address these questions. We present a Dyson-Schwinger equation perspective on this effort with numerous illustrations, amongst them: an interpretation of string-breaking; a symmetry-preserving truncation for mesons; the nucleon's strangeness sigma-term; and the neutron's charge distribution.
