Backscatter-Assisted High-Speed Rail Communications in Straight Tunnel Environments: Effects of Tag Number and Phase Control

Backscatter communication is a promising technology to enhance the signal strength received by the receiver in straight tunnel environments. The impact of the number of tags and their phase adjustment on system performance remains a challenging issue though. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the channel gain of backscatter-assisted communication with multiple tags in straight tunnels. In particular, we derive the probabilities that the backscatter link gain is greater than the direct link under adjustable and random phase assumptions by applying the Gaussian and Gamma approximations to derive tractable expressions. The simulation results show that phaseadjustable tags significantly improve the channel gain of the backscatter links compared to the random phase case. Moreover, the number of tags has an upper threshold for an effective tag deployment pattern. These insights provide valuable guidelines for the efficient design of backscatter communication systems in tunnel environments.

A New Rate Splitting Strategy for Uplink CR-NOMA Systems

In uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) channels, the existing cooperative successive interference cancellation (SIC) and power control (PC) schemes lack the capability of achieving the full capacity region, which restricts the outage performance of uplink NOMA users. For the uplink cognitive radio inspired NOMA system, we propose a new rate splitting (RS) strategy to maximize the achievable rate of the secondary user without deteriorating the primary user's outage performance. Based on the interference threshold and its own channel gain, the secondary user adaptively conducts RS, transmit power allocation and SIC, which utilizes the transmit power efficiently. The closed-form expression for the outage probability is derived for the secondary user. Numerical results show that the proposed RS scheme achieves the best outage performance for the secondary user among the existing cooperative SIC and PC schemes.

Cognitive Radio-Inspired Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Semi-Grant-Free Transmissions

In this paper, we propose a cognitive radio-inspired rate-splitting multiple access (CR-RSMA) scheme to assist semi-grant-free (SGF) transmissions in which a grant-based user (GBU) and multiple grant-free users (GFUs) access the base-station (BS) by sharing the same resource block. Using the cognitive radio principle, the GBU and admitted GFU are treated as the primary and secondary users, respectively, and rate-splitting is applied at the admitted GFU to realize SGF transmissions. The admitted GFU's transmit power allocation, target rate allocation, and successive interference cancellation decoding order at the BS are jointly optimized to attain the maximum achievable rate for the admitted GFU without deteriorating the GBU's outage performance compared to orthogonal multiple access. Due to the extended non-outage zone, CR-RSMA-assised SGF (CR-RSMA-SGF) transmissions achieve a lower outage probability than SGF transmissions assisted by cognitive radio-inspired non-orthogonal multiple access. Exact expressions and asymptotic analysis for the admitted GFU's outage probability are derived to evaluate the system performance achieved by CR-RSMA-SGF transmissions. The superior outage performance and full multiuser diversity gain achieved by CR-RSMA-SGF transmissions are verified by the analytical and simulation results.

Extreme Age of Information for Wireless-Powered Communication Systems

The extreme or maximum age of information (AoI) is analytically studied for wireless communication systems. In particular, a wireless powered single-antenna source node and a receiver (connected to the power grid) equipped with multiple antennas are considered when operated under independent Rayleigh-faded channels. Via the extreme value theory and its corresponding statistical features, we demonstrate that the extreme AoI converges to the Gumbel distribution whereas its corresponding parameters are obtained in straightforward closed-form expressions. Capitalizing on this result, the risk of the extreme AoI realization is analytically evaluated according to some relevant performance metrics, while some useful engineering insights are manifested.

New Antenna Selection Schemes for Full-Duplex Cooperative MIMO-NOMA Systems

In this paper, we address the antenna selection (AS) problem in full-duplex (FD) cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems, where a multi-antenna FD relay bridges the connection between the multi-antenna base station and NOMA far user. Specifically, two AS schemes, namely max-$\SUu$ and max-$\SUuu$, are proposed to maximize the end-to-end signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at either or both near and far users, respectively. Moreover, a two-stage AS scheme, namely quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning scheme, is designed to realize a specific rate at the far user while improving the near user's rate. To enhance the performance of the QoS provisioning AS scheme, the idea of dynamic antenna clustering is applied at the relay to adaptively partition the relay's antennas into transmit and receive subsets. The proposed AS schemes' exact outage probability and achievable rate expressions are derived. To provide more insight, closed-form asymptotic outage probability expressions for the max-$\SUu$ and max-$\SUuu$ AS schemes are obtained. Our results show that while the QoS provisioning AS scheme can deliver a near-optimal performance for static antenna setup at the relay, it provides up to $12\%$ average sum rate gain over the optimum AS selection with fixed antenna setup.

Rate Splitting Multiple Access Aided Mobile Edge Computing in Cognitive Radio Networks

In this paper, we investigate rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) aided mobile edge computing (MEC) in a cognitive radio network. We propose a RSMA scheme that enables the secondary user to offload tasks to the MEC server utilizing dynamic rate splitting without deteriorating the primary user's offloading. The expressions for the optimal rate splitting parameters that maximize the achievable rate for the secondary user and successful computation probability of the proposed RSMA scheme are derived in closed-form. We formulate a problem to maximize successful computation probability by jointly optimizing task offloading ratio and task offloading time and obtain the optimal solutions in closed-form. Simulation results clarify that the proposed RSMA scheme achieves a higher successful computation probability than the existing non-orthogonal multiple access scheme.

Non-Linear Age of Information: An Energy Efficient Receiver-Centric Approach

The age of information (AoI) performance metric for point-to-point wireless communication systems is analytically studied under Rician-faded channels and when the receiver is equipped with multiple antennas. The general scenario of a non-linear AoI function is considered, which includes the conventional linear AoI as a special case. The stop-and-wait transmission policy is adopted, where the source node samples and then transmits new data only upon the successful reception of previous data. This approach can serve as a performance benchmark for any queuing system used in practice. New analytical and closed-form expressions are derived with respect to the average AoI and average peak AoI for the considered system configuration. We particularly focus on the energy efficiency of the said mode of operation, whereas some useful engineering insights are provided.

Air-to-Air Communications Beyond 5G: A Novel 3D CoMP Transmission Scheme

In this paper, a novel $3$D cellular model consisting of aerial base stations (aBSs) and aerial user equipments (aUEs) is proposed, by integrating the coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission technique with the theory of stochastic geometry. For this new $3$D architecture, a tractable model for aBSs' deployment based on the binomial-Delaunay tetrahedralization is developed, which ensures seamless coverage for a given space. In addition, a versatile and practical frequency allocation scheme is designed to eliminate the inter-cell interference effectively. Based on this model, performance metrics including the achievable data rate and coverage probability are derived for two types of aUEs: {\it i)} the general aUE (i.e., an aUE having distinct distances from its serving aBSs) and {\it ii)} the worst-case aUE (i.e., an aUE having equal distances from its serving aBSs). Simulation and numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach emphatically outperforms the conventional binomial-Voronoi tessellation without CoMP. Insightfully, it provides a similar performance to the binomial-Voronoi tessellation which utilizes the conventional CoMP scheme; yet, introducing a considerably reduced computational complexity and backhaul/signaling overhead.

Generalized Energy Detection Under Generalized Noise Channels

Generalized energy detection (GED) is analytically studied when operates under fast-faded channels and in the presence of generalized noise. For the first time, the McLeish distribution is used to model the underlying noise, which is suitable for both non-Gaussian (impulsive) as well as classical Gaussian noise channels. Important performance metrics are presented in closed forms, such as the false-alarm and detection probabilities as well as the decision threshold. Analytical and simulation results are cross-compared validating the accuracy of the proposed approach in the entire signal-to-noise ratio regime. Finally, useful outcomes are extracted with respect to GED system settings under versatile noise environments and when noise uncertainty is present.

Moment-based Spectrum Sensing Under Generalized Noise Channels

A new spectrum sensing detector is proposed and analytically studied, when it operates under generalized noise channels. Particularly, the McLeish distribution is used to model the underlying noise, which is suitable for both non-Gaussian (impulsive) as well as classical Gaussian noise modeling. The introduced detector adopts a moment-based approach, whereas it is not required to know the transmit signal and channel fading statistics (i.e., blind detection). Important performance metrics are presented in closed forms, such as the false-alarm probability, detection probability and decision threshold. Analytical and simulation results are cross-compared validating the accuracy of the proposed approach. Finally, it is demonstrated that the proposed approach outperforms the conventional energy detector in the practical case of noise uncertainty, yet introducing a comparable computational complexity.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface assisted Two-Way Communications: Performance Analysis and Optimization

In this paper, we investigate the two-way communication between two users assisted by a re-configurable intelligent surface (RIS). The scheme that two users communicate simultaneously over Rayleigh fading channels is considered. The channels between the two users and RIS can either be reciprocal or non-reciprocal. For reciprocal channels, we determine the optimal phases at the RIS to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). We then derive exact closed-form expressions for the outage probability and spectral efficiency for single-element RIS. By capitalizing the insights obtained from the single-element analysis, we introduce a gamma approximation to model the product of Rayleigh random variables which is useful for the evaluation of the performance metrics in multiple-element RIS. Asymptotic analysis shows that the outage decreases at $\left(\log(ρ)/ρ\right)^L$ rate where $L$ is the number of elements, whereas the spectral efficiency increases at $\log(ρ)$ rate at large average SINR $ρ$. For non-reciprocal channels, the minimum user SINR is targeted to be maximized. For single-element RIS, closed-form solution is derived whereas for multiple-element RIS the problem turns out to be non-convex. The latter one is solved through semidefinite programming relaxation and a proposed greedy-iterative method, which can achieve higher performance and lower computational complexity, respectively.

Traffic-aware Two-stage Queueing Communication Networks: Queue Analysis and Energy Saving

To boost energy saving for the general delay-tolerant IoT networks, a two-stage and single-relay queueing communication scheme is investigated. Concretely, a traffic-aware $N$-threshold and gated-service policy are applied at the relay. As two fundamental and significant performance metrics, the mean waiting time and long-term expected power consumption are explicitly derived and related with the queueing and service parameters, such as packet arrival rate, service threshold and channel statistics. Besides, we take into account the electrical circuit energy consumptions when the relay server and access point (AP) are in different modes and energy costs for mode transitions, whereby the power consumption model is more practical. The expected power minimization problem under the mean waiting time constraint is formulated. Tight closed-form bounds are adopted to obtain tractable analytical formulae with less computational complexity. The optimal energy-saving service threshold that can flexibly adjust to packet arrival rate is determined. In addition, numerical results reveal that: 1) sacrificing the mean waiting time not necessarily facilitates power savings; 2) a higher arrival rate leads to a greater optimal service threshold; and 3) our policy performs better than the current state-of-the-art.

UAV-Aided Multi-Way NOMA Networks with Residual Hardware Impairments

In this paper, we study an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) multi-way relaying networks (MWRNs). Multiple terrestrial users aim to exchange their mutual information via an amplify-and-forward (AF) UAV relay. Specifically, the realistic assumption of the residual hardware impairments (RHIs) at the transceivers is taken into account. To evaluate the performance of the considered networks, we derive the analytical expressions for the achievable sum-rate (ASR). In addition, we carry out the asymptotic analysis by invoking the affine expansion of the ASR in terms of \emph{high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) slope} and \emph{high SNR power offset}. Numerical results show that: 1) Compared with orthogonal multiple access (OMA), the proposed networks can significantly improve the ASR since it can reduce the time slots from $\left[ {\left( {M - 1} \right)/2} \right] + 1$ to 2; and 2) RHIs of both transmitter and receiver have the same effects on the ASR of the considered networks.

Metasurface-Enabled Interference Suppression at Visible-Light Communications

Light can be used for wireless information transmission apart from illumination; that is the key idea behind visible-light communication (VLC), one of the disruptive technologies of our days. It combines remarkably high data rates due to ultrashort wavelengths with huge reliability and security due to small distances; nevertheless, it substantially suffers from interference of neighboring light sources in multiple-link configurations. In this manuscript, we investigate a pair of light emitting diodes (LEDs) interfering each other and propose a simple nanoslit metasurface that radically increases the directivity of the transmitting beams. As a result, enhancement of the signal-to-interference ratio by several orders of magnitude is reported. The considered generic setup retains its beneficial features in the presence of realistic design defects and, accordingly, may inspire standardization efforts towards the adoption of VLC in next-generation heterogeneous communication networks.

Analytic solutions to a Marcum Q-function-based integral and application in energy detection of unknown signals over multipath fading channels

This work presents analytic solutions for a useful integral in wireless communications, which involves the Marcum $Q{-}$function in combination with an exponential function and arbitrary power terms. The derived expressions have a rather simple algebraic representation which renders them convenient both analytically and computationally. Furthermore, they can be useful in wireless communications and particularly in the context of cognitive radio communications and radar systems, where this integral is often encountered. To this end, we derive novel expressions for the probability of detection in energy detection based spectrum sensing over $η{-}μ$ fading channels. These expressions are given in closed-form and are subsequently employed in analyzing the effects of generalised multipath fading conditions in cognitive radio systems. As expected, it is shown that the detector is highly dependent upon the severity of fading conditions as even slight variation of the fading parameters affect the corresponding performance significantly.

Distributed Spatial Multiplexing Systems with Hardware Impairments and Imperfect Channel Estimation under Rank-$1$ Rician Fading Channels

The performance of a multiuser communication system with single-antenna transmitting terminals and a multi-antenna base-station receiver is analytically investigated. The system operates under independent and non-identically distributed rank-$1$ Rician fading channels with imperfect channel estimation and residual hardware impairments (compensation algorithms are assumed, which mitigate the main impairments) at the transceiver. The spatial multiplexing mode of operation is considered where all the users are simultaneously transmitting their streams to the receiver. Zero-forcing is applied along with successive interference cancellation (SIC) as a means for efficient detection of the received streams. New analytical closed-form expressions are derived for some important performance metrics, namely, the outage probability and ergodic capacity of the entire system. Both the analytical expressions and simulation results show the impact of imperfect channel estimation and hardware impairments to the overall system performance in the usage scenarios of massive MIMO and mmWave communication systems.

Efficient Coded Cooperative Networks with Energy Harvesting and Wireless Power Transfer

The optimum off-line energy management scheme for multi-user multi-relay networks employing energy harvesting and wireless energy transfer is studied. Specifically, the users are capable of harvesting and transferring energy to each other over consecutive transmissions, though they have no fixed energy supplies. Meanwhile, network coding for the users' messages is conducted at the relays to enable cooperative transmission with source nodes in independent but not necessarily identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) Nakagami-$m$ fading channels. Therefore, a simultaneous two level cooperation, i.e., information-level and energy-level cooperation is conducted. The problem of energy efficiency (EE) maximization under constraints of the energy causality and a predefined outage probability threshold is formulated and shown to be non-convex. By exploiting fractional and geometric programming, a convex form-based iterative algorithm is developed to solve the problem efficiently. Close-to-optimal power allocation and energy cooperation policies across consecutive transmissions are found. Moreover, the effects of relay locations and wireless energy transmission efficiency are investigated and the performance comparison with the current state of solutions demonstrates that the proposed policies can manage the harvested energy more efficiently.

Energy Efficient Cooperative Network Coding with Joint Relay Scheduling and Power Allocation

The energy efficiency (EE) of a multi-user multi-relay system with the maximum diversity network coding (MDNC) is studied. We explicitly find the connection among the outage probability, energy consumption and EE and formulate the maximizing EE problem under the outage probability constraints. Relay scheduling (RS) and power allocation (PA) are applied to schedule the relay states (transmitting, sleeping, \emph{etc}) and optimize the transmitting power under the practical channel and power consumption models. Since the optimization problem is NP-hard, to reduce computational complexity, the outage probability is first tightly approximated to a log-convex form. Further, the EE is converted into a subtractive form based on the fractional programming. Then a convex mixed-integer nonlinear problem (MINLP) is eventually obtained. With a generalized outer approximation (GOA) algorithm, RS and PA are solved in an iterative manner. The Pareto-optimal curves between the EE and the target outage probability show the EE gains from PA and RS. Moreover, by comparing with the no network coding (NoNC) scenario, we conclude that with the same number of relays, MDNC can lead to EE gains. However, if RS is implemented, NoNC can outperform MDNC in terms of the EE when more relays are needed in the MDNC scheme.

Green Cognitive Relaying: Opportunistically Switching Between Data Transmission and Energy Harvesting

Energy efficiency has become an encouragement, and more than this, a requisite for the design of next-generation wireless communications standards. In current work, a dual-hop cognitive (secondary) relaying system is considered, incorporating multiple amplify-and-forward relays, a rather cost-effective solution. First, the secondary relays sense the wireless channel, scanning for a primary network activity, and then convey their reports to a secondary base station (SBS). Afterwards, the SBS, based on these reports and its own estimation, decides cooperatively the presence of primary transmission or not. In the former scenario, all the secondary nodes start to harvest energy from the transmission of primary node(s). In the latter scenario, the system initiates secondary communication via a best relay selection policy. Performance evaluation of this system is thoroughly investigated, by assuming realistic channel conditions, i.e., non-identical link-distances, Rayleigh fading, and outdated channel estimation. The detection and outage probabilities as well as the average harvested energy are derived as new closed-form expressions. In addition, an energy efficiency optimization problem is analytically formulated and solved, while a necessary condition in terms of power consumption minimization for each secondary node is presented. From a green communications standpoint, it turns out that energy harvesting greatly enhances the resources of secondary nodes, especially when primary activity is densely present.

On the Joint Impact of Hardware Impairments and Imperfect CSI on Successive Decoding

In this paper, a spatial multiplexing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system when hardware along with RF imperfections occur during the communication setup is analytically investigated. More specifically, the scenario of hardware impairments at the transceiver and imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the receiver is considered, when successive interference cancellation (SIC) is implemented. Two popular linear detection schemes are analyzed, namely, zero forcing SIC (ZF-SIC) and minimum mean-square error SIC (MMSE-SIC). New analytical expressions for the outage probability of each SIC stage are provided, when independent and identically distributed Rayleigh fading channels are considered. In addition, the well-known error propagation effect between consecutive SIC stages is analyzed, while closed-form expressions are derived for some special cases of interest. Finally, useful engineering insights are manifested, such as the achievable diversity order, the performance difference between ZF- and MMSE-SIC, and the impact of imperfect CSI and/or the presence of hardware impairments to the overall system performance.

Simultaneous Spectrum Sensing and Data Reception for Cognitive Spatial Multiplexing Distributed Systems

A multi-user cognitive (secondary) radio system is considered, where the spatial multiplexing mode of operation is implemented amongst the nodes, under the presence of multiple primary transmissions. The secondary receiver carries out minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) detection to effectively decode the secondary data streams, while it performs spectrum sensing at the remaining signal to capture the presence of primary activity or not. New analytical closed-form expressions regarding some important system measures are obtained, namely, the outage and detection probabilities; the transmission power of the secondary nodes; the probability of unexpected interference at the primary nodes; {\color{blue}and the detection efficiency with the aid of the area under the receive operating characteristics curve}. The realistic scenarios of channel fading time variation and channel estimation errors are encountered for the derived results. Finally, the enclosed numerical results verify the accuracy of the proposed framework, while some useful engineering insights are also revealed, such as the key role of the detection accuracy to the overall performance and the impact of transmission power from the secondary nodes to the primary system.

Analytic Expressions and Bounds for Special Functions and Applications in Communication Theory

This work is devoted to the derivation of novel analytic expressions and bounds for a family of special functions that are useful in wireless communication theory. These functions are the well-known Nuttall $Q{-}$function, the incomplete Toronto function, the Rice $Ie$-function and the incomplete Lipschitz-Hankel integrals. Capitalizing on the offered results, useful identities are additionally derived between the above functions and the Humbert, $Φ_{1}$, function as well as for specific cases of the Kamp${\it \acute{e}}$ de F${\it \acute{e}}$riet function. These functions can be considered useful mathematical tools that can be employed in applications relating to the analytic performance evaluation of modern wireless communication systems such as cognitive radio, cooperative and free-space optical communications as well as radar, diversity and multi-antenna systems. As an example, new closed-form expressions are derived for the outage probability over non-linear generalized fading channels, namely, $α{-}η{-}μ$, $α{-}λ{-}μ$ and $α{-}κ{-}μ$ as well as for specific cases of the $η{-}μ$ and $λ{-}μ$ fading channels. Furthermore, simple expressions are presented for the channel capacity for the truncated channel inversion with fixed rate and the corresponding optimum cut-off signal-to-noise ratio for single-and multi-antenna communication systems over Rician fading channels. The accuracy and validity of the derived expressions is justified through extensive comparisons with respective numerical results.

Cellular-Base-Station Assisted Device-to-Device Communications in TV White Space

This paper presents a systematic approach to exploit TV white space (TVWS) for device-to-device (D2D) communications with the aid of the existing cellular infrastructure. The goal is to build a location-specific TVWS database, which provides a look-up table service for any D2D link to determine its maximum permitted emission power (MPEP) in an unlicensed digital TV (DTV) band. To achieve this goal, the idea of mobile crowd sensing is firstly introduced to collect active spectrum measurements from massive personal mobile devices. Considering the incompleteness of crowd measurements, we formulate the problem of unknown measurements recovery as a matrix completion problem and apply a powerful fixed point continuation algorithm to reconstruct the unknown elements from the known elements. By joint exploitation of the big spectrum data in its vicinity, each cellular base station further implements a nonlinear support vector machine algorithm to perform irregular coverage boundary detection of a licensed DTV transmitter. With the knowledge of the detected coverage boundary, an opportunistic spatial reuse algorithm is developed for each D2D link to determine its MPEP. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can successfully enable D2D communications in TVWS while satisfying the interference constraint from the licensed DTV services. In addition, to our best knowledge, this is the first try to explore and exploit TVWS inside the DTV protection region resulted from the shadowing effect. Potential application scenarios include communications between internet of vehicles in the underground parking, D2D communications in hotspots such as subway, game stadiums, and airports, etc.

Wireless Information and Power Transfer in Relay Systems with Multiple Antennas and Interference

In this paper, an energy harvesting dual-hop relaying system without/with the presence of co-channel interference (CCI) is investigated. Specifically, the energy constrained multi-antenna relay node is powered by either the information signal of the source or via the signal receiving from both the source and interferer. In particular, we first study the outage probability and ergodic capacity of an interference free system, and then extend the analysis to an interfering environment. To exploit the benefit of multiple antennas, three different linear processing schemes are investigated, namely, 1) Maximum ratio combining/maximal ratio transmission (MRC/MRT), 2) Zero-forcing/MRT (ZF/MRT) and 3) Minimum mean-square error/MRT (MMSE/MRT). For all schemes, both the systems outage probability and ergodic capacity are studied, and the achievable diversity order is also presented. In addition, the optimal power splitting ratio minimizing the outage probability is characterized. Our results show that the implementation of multiple antennas increases the energy harvesting capability, hence, significantly improves the systems performance. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the CCI could be potentially exploited to substantially boost the performance, while the choice of a linear processing scheme plays a critical role in determining how much gain could be extracted from the CCI.
