DMRG study of FQHE systems in the open cylinder geometry

The study of the fractional quantum Hall liquid state of two-dimensional electrons requires a non-perturbative treatment of interactions. It is possible to perform exact diagonalizations of the Hamiltonian provided one considers only a small number of electrons in an appropriate geometry. Many insights have been obtained in the past from considering electrons moving on a sphere or on a torus. In the Landau gauge it is also natural to impose periodic boundary conditions in only one direction, the cylinder geometry. The interacting problem now looks formally like a one-dimensional problem that can be attacked by the standard DMRG algorithm. We have studied the efficiency of this algorithm to study the ground state properties of the electron liquid at lowest Landau level filling factor $ν=1/3$ when the interactions are truncated to the two most important repulsive hard-core components. Use of finite-size DMRG allows us to conclude that the ground state is a compressible two-electron bubble phase in agreement with previous Hartree-Fock calculations. We discuss the treatment of Coulomb interactions in the cylinder geometry. To regularize the long-distance behavior of the Coulomb potential, we compare two methods: using a Yukawa potential or forbidding arbitrary long distances by defining the interelectron distance as the chord distance through the cylinder. This allows us to observe the Wigner crystal state for small filling factor.

Highest weight Macdonald and Jack Polynomials

Fractional quantum Hall states of particles in the lowest Landau levels are described by multivariate polynomials. The incompressible liquid states when described on a sphere are fully invariant under the rotation group. Excited quasiparticle/quasihole states are member of multiplets under the rotation group and generically there is a nontrivial highest weight member of the multiplet from which all states can be constructed. Some of the trial states proposed in the literature belong to classical families of symmetric polynomials. In this paper we study Macdonald and Jack polynomials that are highest weight states. For Macdonald polynomials it is a (q,t)-deformation of the raising angular momentum operator that defines the highest weight condition. By specialization of the parameters we obtain a classification of the highest weight Jack polynomials. Our results are valid in the case of staircase and rectangular partition indexing the polynomials.

Parafermionic states in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate possible parafermionic states in rapidly rotating ultracold bosonic atomic gases at lowest Landau level filling factor nu=k/2. We study how the system size and interactions act upon the overlap between the true ground state and a candidate Read-Rezayi state. We also consider the quasihole states which are expected to display non-Abelian statistics. We numerically evaluate the degeneracy of these states and show agreement with a formula given by E. Ardonne. We compute the overlaps between low-lying exact eigenstates and quasihole candidate wavefunctions. We discuss the validity of the parafermion description as a function of the filling factor.

Generalized nonlinear sigma model approach to alternating spin chains and ladders

We generalize the nonlinear sigma model treatment of quantum spin chains to cases including ferromagnetic bonds. When these bonds are strong enough, the classical ground state is no longer the standard Neel order and we present an extension of the known formalism to deal with this situation. We study the alternating ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic spin chain introduced by Hida. The smooth crossover between decoupled dimers and the Haldane phase is semi-quantitatively reproduced. We study also a spin ladder with diagonal exchange couplings that interpolates between the gapped phase of the two-leg spin ladder and the Haldane phase. Here again we show that there is good agreement between DMRG data and our analytical results.

Effects of randomness on the antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain

We investigate the effect of weak randomness on the antiferromagnetic anisotropic spin-1 chain. We use Abelian bosonization to construct the low-energy effective theory. A renormalization group calculation up to second order in the strength of the disorder is performed on this effective theory. We observe in this framework the destruction of the antiferromagnetic ordered phase `a la Imry-Ma. We predict the effects of a random magnetic field along z axis, a random field in the XY plane as well as random exchange with and without XY symmetry. Instabilities of massless phases appear in general by mechanisms different from the case of the 2-leg spin ladder.

A self-consistent theory of phase transitions in noncollinear magnets

I study phase transitions occuring in noncollinear magnets by means of a self-consistent screening approximation. The Ginzburg-Landau theory involves two N-component vector fields with two independent quartic couplings allowing a symmetry-breaking scheme which is SO(N)times SO(2) broken down to SO(N-2)times SO(2)_diag. I find that there is a second-order phase transition in the physical cases N=2,3, D=3 and that there is no fluctuation-induced first-order transition. This is very similar to the case of the normal-to-superconducting phase transition as recently found by Radzihovsky. The exponents are eta(N=3,D=3)= 0.11, eta(N=2,D=3) =0.15 and go smoothly to the large-N limit.

Haldane Gap and Hidden Order in the S=2 Antiferromagnetic Quantum Spin Chain

We have investigated Haldane's conjecture for the S=2 isotropic antiferromagnetic quantum spin chain with nearest-neighbor exchange J. Using a density matrix renormalization group algorithm for chains up to L=350 spins, we find in the thermodynamic limit a finite spin gap of Delta = 0.085(5)J and a finite spin-spin correlation length xi = 49(1) lattice spacings. We establish the ground state energy per bond to be E_0=-4.761248(1)J. We show that the ground state has a hidden topological order that is revealed in a nonlocal string correlation function. This means that the physics of the S=2 chain can be captured by a valence-bond solid description. We also observe effective free spin-1 states at the ends of an open S=2 chain.

Physical Meaning of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki S=1 Quantum spin chain

Most of the present understanding of the S=1 quantum spin chains displaying the Haldane gap is coming from the so-called valence-bond-solid Hamiltonian which has an exactly known ground state. We show that this point is characterized by the onset of short-range incommensurate spin correlations in the one-parameter family of Hamiltonians with biquadratic coupling: H = sum_i S_i S_{i+1} +alpha sum_i ( S_i S_{i+1} )^2. This gives a physical meaning to this special point. We establish precise values for the gaps, correlations, the string order parameter, and identify the VBS point as a *disorder* point in the sense of classical statistical mechanics. It is a quantum remnant of the classical transition between a ground state with long-range Néel order and a ground state with incommensurate long-range order.

A Renormalization Group Study of Helimagnets in D=2+EPSILON Dimensions

We study a non linear sigma model $O(N)\otimes O(2)/O(N-2)\otimes O(2)$ describing the phase transition of N-components helimagnets up to two loop order in $D=2+ε$ dimensions. It is shown that a stable fixed point exists as soon as $N$ is greater than 3 (or equal). In the N=3 case, the symmetry of the system is dynamically enlarged at the fixed point to O(4) We show that the order parameter for Heisenberg helimagnets involves a tensor representation of $O(4)$. We show that for large $N$ and in the neighborhood of two dimensions this nonlinear sigma model describes the same critical theory as the Landau-Ginzburg linear theory. We deduce that there exists a dividing line $N_c (D)$ in the plane $(N, D)$ separating a first-order region containing the Heisenberg point at $D=4$ and a second-order region containing the whole $D=2$ axis. We conclude that the phase transition of Heisenberg helimagnets in dimension 3 is either first order or second order with $O(4)$ exponents involving a tensor representation or tricritical.

Electronic Structure of Fullerene Anions

We study the electronic states of isolated fullerene anions C$^{n-}_{60}$ ($1\le n \le 6$) taking into account the effective interaction between electrons due to exchange of intramolecular phonons. If the vibronic coupling is strong enough such an effect may overwhelm Hund's rule and lead to an ordering of levels that can be interpreted as on-ball pairing, in a manner similar to the pairing in atomic nuclei. We suggest that such effects may be sought in solutions of fulleride ions and discuss recent experimental results.

Generalized spin density wave state of the Hubbard model on the C12 and C60 clusters

The one-band Hubbard model at half-filling on a truncated tetrahedron (C$_{12}$), and on the C$_{60}$ molecule is studied. Within the Hartree-Fock approximation, we find a magnetic-like instability of the `Fermi sea' towards a spin-ordered phase for an intermediate value of the coupling ${\rm (U/t)_c}\approx 2.6$. The ordered phase presents a spin arrangement similar to that of the classical Heisenberg model defined on the same clusters. We study the linear excitations around the Hartree-Fock ground states using the random-phase approximation. On a finite cluster, we expect that these results signal the presence of a $rapid$ $crossover$ between a paramagnetic region and a regime where spin correlations are important. The relationship with the Heisenberg limit (large ${\rm U/t}$) is discussed. Finally, we comment on implications of our results for purely repulsive models of superconductivity in alkali-metal-doped fullerenes.
