An algorithmic approach using multivariate polynomials for the nonlinearity of Boolean functions

The nonlinearity of a Boolean function is a key property in deciding its suitability for cryptographic purposes, e.g. as a combining function in stream ciphers, and so the nonlinearity computation is an important problem for applications. Traditional methods to compute the nonlinearity are based on transforms, such as the Fast Walsh Transform. In 2007 Simonetti proposed a method to solve the above problem seen as a decision problem on the existence of solutions for some multivariate polynomial systems. Although novel as approach, her algorithm suffered from a direct application of Groebner bases and was thus impractical. We now propose two more practical approaches, one that determines the existence of solutions for Simonetti's systems in a faster way and another that writes similar systems but over fields with a different characteristics. For our algorithms we provide an efficient implementation in the software package MAGMA.

Term-ordering free involutive bases

In this paper, we consider a monomial ideal J in P := A[x1,...,xn], over a commutative ring A, and we face the problem of the characterization for the family Mf(J) of all homogeneous ideals I in P such that the A-module P/I is free with basis given by the set of terms in the Groebner escalier N(J) of J. This family is in general wider than that of the ideals having J as initial ideal w.r.t. any term-ordering, hence more suited to a computational approach to the study of Hilbert schemes. For this purpose, we exploit and enhance the concepts of multiplicative variables, complete sets and involutive bases introduced by Janet and we generalize the construction of J-marked bases and term-ordering free reduction process introduced and deeply studied for the special case of a strongly stable monomial ideal J. Here, we introduce and characterize for every monomial ideal J a particular complete set of generators F(J), called stably complete, that allows an explicit description of the family Mf(J). We obtain stronger results if J is quasi stable, proving that F(J) is a Pommaret basis and Mf(J) has a natural structure of affine scheme. The final section presents a detailed analysis of the origin and the historical evolution of the main notions we refer to.

Oracle-supported drawing of the Groebner {\em escalier}

The aim of this note is to discuss the following quite queer Problem: \noindent GIVEN \noindent i) the free non-commutative polynomial ring, ${\Cal P} := {\Bbb F}\langle X_1,\ldots,X_n\rangle$ {\em (public)}, \noindent ii) a bilateral ideal ${\sf I}\subset {\Bbb F}\langle X_1,\ldots,X_n\rangle$ {\em (private)}, \noindent iii) a finite set $G := \{g_1,\ldots,g_l\}\subset{\sf I}$ of elements of the ideal ${\sf I}$ {\em (public)}, \noindent a noetherian semigroup term-ordering $\prec,$ {\rm (private)}, on the word semigroup ${\Cal T} := < X_1,\ldots,X_n>$, \noindent COMPUTE \noindent --a finite subset $H\subsetΓ({\sf I})$ of the Gröbner basis $Γ({\sf I})$ of ${\sf I}$ w.r.t. $\prec$ s.t., for each $g_i\in G$ its {\em normal form} $NF(g_i,H)$ w.r.t. $H$ is zero, \noindent "by means of a finite number of queries to an oracle", which, \noindent given a term $τ\in{\Cal T}$ returns its {\em canonical form} $\Can(τ,{\sf I},\prec)$ w.r.t. the ideal ${\sf I}$ and the term-ordering $\prec$. \qed This queer problem has been suggested to us by Bulygin (2005) where a similar problem, but with stronger assumptions, is faced in order to set up a chosen-cyphertext attack against the cryptographic system proposed in Rai (2004).
