Magic square and half-hypermultiplets in F-theory

In six-dimensional F-theory/heterotic string theory, half-hypermultiplets arise only when they correspond to particular quaternionic Kähler symmetric spaces, which are mostly associated with the Freudenthal-Tits magic square. Motivated by the intriguing singularity structure previously found in such F-theory models with a gauge group $SU(6)$,$SO(12)$ or $E_7$, we investigate, as the final magical example, an F-theory on an elliptic fibration over a Hirzebruch surface of the non-split $I_6$ type, in which the unbroken gauge symmetry is supposed to be $Sp(3)$. We find significant qualitative differences between the previous F-theory models associated with the magic square and the present case. We argue that the relevant half-hypermultiplets arise at the $E_6$ points, where half-hypermultiplets ${\bf 20}$ of $SU(6)$ would have appeared in the split model. We also consider the problem on the non-local matter generation near the $D_6$ point. After stating what the problem is, we explain why this is so by using the recent result that a split/non-split transition can be regarded as a conifold transition.

Looijenga's weighted projective space, Tate's algorithm and Mordell-Weil Lattice in F-theory and heterotic string theory

It is now well known that the moduli space of a vector bundle for heterotic string compactifications to four dimensions is parameterized by a set of sections of a weighted projective space bundle of a particular kind, known as Looijenga's weighted projective space bundle. We show that the requisite weighted projective spaces and the Weierstrass equations describing the spectral covers for gauge groups E_N (N=4,...,8) and SU(n+1) (n=1,2,3) can be obtained systematically by a series of blowing-up procedures according to Tate's algorithm, thereby the sections of correct line bundles claimed to arise by Looijenga's theorem can be automatically obtained. They are nothing but the four-dimensional analogue of the set of independent polynomials in the six-dimensional F-theory parameterizing the complex structure, which is further confirmed in the constructions of D_4, A_5, D_6, E_3 and SU(2) x SU(2) bundles. We also explain why we can obtain them in this way by using the structure theorem of the Mordell-Weil lattice, which is also useful for understanding the relation between the singularity and the occurrence of chiral matter in F-theory.

Anomaly-free Multiple Singularity Enhancement in F-theory

We study global Calabi-Yau realizations of multiple singularity enhancement relevant for family-unification model building in F-theory. We examine the conditions under which the generation of extra chiral matter at multiple singularities on 7-branes in six-dimensional F-theory can be consistent with anomaly cancellation. It is shown that the generation of extra matter is consistent only if it is accompanied by simultaneous degenerations of loci of the leading polynomial of the discriminant so that the total number of chiral matter does not change. We also show that the number of singlets expected to arise matches the decrease of the complex structure moduli for the restricted geometry.

Twisted boundary states in Kazama-Suzuki models

We construct Cardy states in the Kazama-Suzuki model G/H x U(1), which satisfy the boundary condition twisted by the automorphisms of the coset theory. We classify all the automorphisms of G/H x U(1) induced from those of the G theory. The automorphism group contains at least a Z_2 as a subgroup corresponding to the charge conjugation. We show that in several models there exist extra elements other than the charge conjugation and that the automorphism group can be larger than Z_2. We give the explicit form of the twisted Cardy states which are associated with the non-trivial automorphisms. It is shown that the resulting states preserve the N=2 superconformal algebra. As an illustration of our construction, we give a detailed study for two hermitian symmetric space models SU(4)/SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) and SO(8)/SO(6) x U(1) both at level one. We also study the action of the level-rank duality on the Cardy states and find the relation with the exceptional Cardy states originated from a conformal embedding.

Novel construction of boundary states in coset conformal field theories

We develop a systematic method to solve the Cardy condition for the coset conformal field theory G/H. The problem is equivalent to finding a non-negative integer valued matrix representation (NIM-rep) of the fusion algebra. Based on the relation of the G/H theory with the tensor product theory G x H, we give a map from NIM-reps of G x H to those of G/H. Our map provides a large class of NIM-reps in coset theories. In particular, we give some examples of NIM-reps not factorizable into the G and the H sectors. The action of the simple currents on NIM-reps plays an essential role in our construction. As an illustration of our procedure, we consider the diagonal coset SU(2)_5 x SU(2)_3 /SU(2)_8 to obtain a new NIM-rep based on the conformal embedding su(2)_3 \oplus su(2)_8 \subset sp(6)_1.

Stability of Quiver Representations and Topology Change

We study phase structure of the moduli space of a D0-brane on the orbifold C^3/Z_2 \times Z_2 based on stability of quiver representations. It is known from an analysis using toric geometry that this model has multiple phases connected by flop transitions. By comparing the results of the two methods, we obtain a correspondence between quiver representations and geometry of toric resolutions of the orbifold. It is shown that a redundancy of coordinates arising in the toric description of the D-brane moduli space, which is a key ingredient of disappearance of non-geometric phases, is understood from the monodromy around the orbifold point. We also discuss why only geometric phases appear from the viewpoint of stability of D0-branes.
