Seiberg-Witten Theory and Monstrous Moonshine

We study the relation between the instanton expansion of the Seiberg-Witten prepotential for $D=4$, ${\cal N}=2$ $SU(2)$ SUSY gauge theory for $N_f=0$ and $1$ and the monstrous moonshine. By utilizing a newly developed simple method to obtain the SW prepotential, it is shown that the coefficients of the expansion of $q=e^{2πτ}$ in terms of $A^2=\frac{Λ^2}{16 a^2}$ ($N_f=0$) or $\frac{Λ^2}{16 \sqrt{2}a^2}$ ($N_f=1$) are all integer coefficient polynomials of the moonshine coefficients of the modular $j$-function. A relationship between the AGT $c = 25$ Liouville CFT and the $c = 24$ vertex operator algebra CFT of the moonshine module is also suggested.

Magic square and half-hypermultiplets in F-theory

In six-dimensional F-theory/heterotic string theory, half-hypermultiplets arise only when they correspond to particular quaternionic Kähler symmetric spaces, which are mostly associated with the Freudenthal-Tits magic square. Motivated by the intriguing singularity structure previously found in such F-theory models with a gauge group $SU(6)$,$SO(12)$ or $E_7$, we investigate, as the final magical example, an F-theory on an elliptic fibration over a Hirzebruch surface of the non-split $I_6$ type, in which the unbroken gauge symmetry is supposed to be $Sp(3)$. We find significant qualitative differences between the previous F-theory models associated with the magic square and the present case. We argue that the relevant half-hypermultiplets arise at the $E_6$ points, where half-hypermultiplets ${\bf 20}$ of $SU(6)$ would have appeared in the split model. We also consider the problem on the non-local matter generation near the $D_6$ point. After stating what the problem is, we explain why this is so by using the recent result that a split/non-split transition can be regarded as a conifold transition.

A dessin on the base: a description of mutually non-local 7-branes without using branch cuts

We consider the special roles of the zero loci of the Weierstrass invariants $g_2(τ(z))$, $g_3(τ(z))$ in F-theory on an elliptic fibration over $P^1$ or a further fibration thereof. They are defined as the zero loci of the coefficient functions $f(z)$ and $g(z)$ of a Weierstrass equation. They are thought of as complex co-dimension one objects and correspond to the two kinds of critical points of a dessin d'enfant of Grothendieck. The $P^1$ base is divided into several cell regions bounded by some domain walls extending from these planes and D-branes, on which the imaginary part of the $J$-function vanishes. This amounts to drawing a dessin with a canonical triangulation. We show that the dessin provides a new way of keeping track of mutual non-localness among 7-branes without employing unphysical branch cuts or their base point. With the dessin we can see that weak- and strong-coupling regions coexist and are located across an $S$-wall from each other. We also present a simple method for computing a monodromy matrix for an arbitrary path by tracing the walls it goes through.

More on a dessin on the base: Kodaira exceptional fibers and mutually (non-)local branes

A "dessin d'enfant" is a graph embedded on a two-dimensional oriented surface named by Grothendieck. Recently we have developed a new way to keep track of non-localness among 7-branes in F-theory on an elliptic fibration over $P^1$ by drawing a triangulated "dessin" on the base. To further demonstrate the usefulness of this method, we provide three examples of its use. We first consider a deformation of the $I_0^*$ Kodaira fiber. With a dessin, we can immediately find out which pairs of 7-branes are (non-)local and compute their monodromies. We next identify the paths of string(-junction)s on the dessin by solving the mass geodesic equation. By numerically computing their total masses, we find that the Hanany-Witten effect has not occurred in this example. Finally, we consider the orientifold limit in the spectral cover/Higgs bundle approach. We observe the characteristic configuration presenting the cluster sub-structure of an O-plane found previously.

Unitary matrix with a Penner-like potential also yields N_f=2

It has been known for some time that a hermitian matrix model with a Penner-like potential yields as its large-N free energy the prepotential of N=2 N_f=2 SU(2) SUSY gauge theory. We give a rigorous proof that a unitary matrix model with the identical potential also yields the same prepotential, although the parameter identifications are slightly different. This result has been anticipated by Itoyama et. al.

Looijenga's weighted projective space, Tate's algorithm and Mordell-Weil Lattice in F-theory and heterotic string theory

It is now well known that the moduli space of a vector bundle for heterotic string compactifications to four dimensions is parameterized by a set of sections of a weighted projective space bundle of a particular kind, known as Looijenga's weighted projective space bundle. We show that the requisite weighted projective spaces and the Weierstrass equations describing the spectral covers for gauge groups E_N (N=4,...,8) and SU(n+1) (n=1,2,3) can be obtained systematically by a series of blowing-up procedures according to Tate's algorithm, thereby the sections of correct line bundles claimed to arise by Looijenga's theorem can be automatically obtained. They are nothing but the four-dimensional analogue of the set of independent polynomials in the six-dimensional F-theory parameterizing the complex structure, which is further confirmed in the constructions of D_4, A_5, D_6, E_3 and SU(2) x SU(2) bundles. We also explain why we can obtain them in this way by using the structure theorem of the Mordell-Weil lattice, which is also useful for understanding the relation between the singularity and the occurrence of chiral matter in F-theory.

Note on three-generation models in heterotic string and F-theory on elliptic Calabi-Yau manifolds over Hirzebruch varieties

We give a complete list of a class of three-generation models in E8 x E8 heterotic string theory and its dual F-theory on an elliptic Calabi-Yau over a (generalized) Hirzebruch variety in which the divisors of the relevant line bundles needed for a smooth Weierstrass model are effective. The most stringent constraint on the bound of the eta class comes from the effectiveness of the divisor of the bundle corresponding to the highest Casimir in Looijenga's weighted projective space, as well as from the compactness of the toric variety. Comparison is also made with the list obtained in the literature.

On Dimensional Reduction of Magical Supergravity Theories

We prove, by a direct dimensional reduction and an explicit construction of the group manifold, that the nonlinear sigma model of the dimensionally reduced three-dimensional A = R magical supergravity is F4(+4)/(USp(6)xSU(2)). This serves as a basis for the solution generating technique in this supergravity as well as allows to give the Lie algebraic characterizations to some of the parameters and functions in the original D = 5 Lagrangian. Generalizations to other magical supergravities are also discussed.

Anomaly-free Multiple Singularity Enhancement in F-theory

We study global Calabi-Yau realizations of multiple singularity enhancement relevant for family-unification model building in F-theory. We examine the conditions under which the generation of extra chiral matter at multiple singularities on 7-branes in six-dimensional F-theory can be consistent with anomaly cancellation. It is shown that the generation of extra matter is consistent only if it is accompanied by simultaneous degenerations of loci of the leading polynomial of the discriminant so that the total number of chiral matter does not change. We also show that the number of singlets expected to arise matches the decrease of the complex structure moduli for the restricted geometry.

Supersymmetric heterotic solutions via non-SU(3) standard embedding

A supersymmetric solution to type II supergravity is constructed by superposing two hyperkählers with torsion metrics. The solution is given by a Käler with torsion metric with $SU(3)$ holonomy. The metric is embedded into a heterotic solution obeying the Strominger system, together with a Yang-Mills instanton obtained by the standard embedding. T dualities lead to an $SO(6)$ instanton describing a symmetry breaking from $E_8$ to $SO(10)$. The compactification by taking a periodic array yields a supersymmetric domain wall solution of heterotic supergravity.

F-theory Family Unification

We propose a new geometric mechanism for naturally realizing unparallel three families of flavors in string theory, using the framework of F-theory. We consider a set of coalesced local 7-branes of a particular Kodaira singularity type and allow some of the branes to bend and separate from the rest, so that they meet only at an intersection point. Such a local configuration can preserve supersymmetry. Its matter spectrum is investigated by studying string junctions near the intersection, and shown to coincide, after an orbifold projection, with that of a supersymmetric coset sigma model whose target space is a homogeneous Kahler manifold associated with a corresponding painted Dynkin diagram. In particular, if one starts from the E7 singularity, one obtains the E7/(SU(5)xU(1)^3) model yielding precisely three generations with an unparallel family structure. Possible applications to string phenomenology are also discussed.

Large Lepton-flavor Mixings from E8 Kodaira Singularity: Lopsided Texture via F-theory Family Unification

We show that a special type of colliding 7-brane configuration of a codimension-two singularity realizes not only a six-dimensional spectrum with exactly the same quantum numbers as that of the three-generation E7/(SU(5) x U(1)^3) coset family unification model, but also the three sets of nonchiral singlet pairs with precisely the correct U(1) charges needed for explaining the Yukawa hierarchies and large lepton-flavor mixings in a well-known seesaw scenario.

"Flip" of SL(2,R)-duality in five-dimensional supergravity

The dimensional reduction of the bosonic sector of five-dimensional minimal supergravity to a Lorentzian four-dimensional spacetime leads to a theory with a massless axion and a dilaton coupled to gravity and two U(1) gauge fields and the dimensionally reduced equations of motion have SL(2,R)/SO(2)-duality invariance. In our previous work, utilizing the duality invariance, we formulated solution-generation techniques within five-dimensional minimal supergravity. In this work, by choosing a timelike Killing vector, we consider dimensional reduction to a four-dimensional Euclidean space, in which the field equations have SL(2,R)/SO(1,1) invariance. In the timelike case, we develop a new duality transformation technique, while in the spacelike case we have done that in the previous work. As an example, by applying it to the Rasheed solutions, we obtain rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole solutions in five-dimensional minimal supergravity. In general, in contrast to the spacelike case, the resulting dimensionally reduced solution includes the so-called NUT parameter and therefore from a four-dimensional point of view, such a spacetime is not asymptotically flat. However, it is shown that in some special cases, it can describe ordinary Kaluza-Klein black holes.

Family Unification via Quasi-Nambu-Goldstone Fermions in String Theory

Some of the supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on exceptional groups (E7 or E8) are known to yield almost minimal necessary content of matter fields for phenomenological model building, including three chiral families and a Higgs multiplet. We explore a possible realization of such a family unification in heterotic string theory, where the spontaneously broken symmetry that we focus on is the one associated with the change of global orientation of the spin bundle embedded in the gauge bundle, which cannot be ignored in the presence of a magnetic source of the B field. We show in a simple model that it indeed gives rise to chiral matter fields on the defect similarly to the domain-wall fermions, and compare the chiral zero mode spectrum with the sigma model. The setup is reduced to a system similar to that postulated in the orbifold GUT or the grand gauge-Higgs unification model, where the origin of Z2 identification is accounted for as arising from the bolt of the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold.

General Kaluza-Klein black holes with all six independent charges in five-dimensional minimal supergravity

Using the SL(2,R)-duality in a dimensionally reduced spacetime in (the bosonic sector of) five-dimensional minimal supergravity, we construct general Kaluza-Klein black hole solutions which carry six independent charges, its mass, angular momentum along four dimensions, electric and magnetic charges of the Maxwell fields in addition to Kaluza-Klein electric and magnetic monopole charges.

New approach to solution generation using SL(2,R)-duality of a dimensionally reduced space in five-dimensional minimal supergravity and new black holes

The dimensional reduction of (the bosonic sector of) five-dimensional minimal supergravity to four dimensions leads to a theory with a massless axion and a dilaton coupled to gravity and two U(1) gauge fields (one of which has Chern-Simons coupling), whose field equations have SL(2,R)-invariance. Utilizing this SL(2,R)-duality, we provide a new formalism for solution generation. As an example, applying it to the Rasheed solution, which are known to describe dyonic rotating black holes (from the four-dimensional point of view) of five-dimensional pure gravity, we obtain rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole solutions in five-dimensional minimal supergravity. We also show that the solutions have six charges: mass, angular momentum, Kaluza-Klein electric/magnetic charges and electric/magnetic charges of the Maxwell field, four of which are related by a constraint.

Taub-NUT Crystal

We consider the Gibbons-Hawking metric for a three-dimensional periodic array of multi-Taub-NUT centers, containing not only centers with a positive NUT charge but also ones with a negative NUT charge. The latter are regarded as representing the asymptotic form of the Atiyah-Hitchin metric. The periodic arrays of Taub-NUT centers have close parallels with ionic crystals, where the Gibbons-Hawking potential plays the role of the Coulomb static potential of the ions, and are similarly classified according to their space groups. After a periodic identification and a Z2 projection, the array is transformed by T-duality to a system of NS5-branes with the SU(2) structure, and a further standard embedding yields, though singular, a half-BPS heterotic 5-brane background with warped compact transverse dimensions. A discussion is given of the possibility of probing the singular geometry by two-dimensional gauge theories.

Note on Anomaly Cancellation on SO(32) heterotic 5-brane

We show that the gauge, gravitational (tangent-bundle) and their mixed anomalies arising from the localized modes near a 5-brane in the SO(32) heterotic string theory cancel with the anomaly inflow from the bulk with the use of the Green-Schwarz mechanism on the brane, similarly to the E_8 x E_8 5-brane case. We also compare our result with Mourad's analysis performed in the small-instanton limit.

Chiral Generations on Intersecting 5-branes in Heterotic String Theory

We show that there exist two 27 and one 27 bar of E6, net one D=4, N=1 chiral matter supermultiplet as zero modes localized on the intersection of two 5-branes in the E8 x E8 heterotic string theory. The smeared intersecting 5-brane solution is used via the standard embedding to construct a heterotic background, which provides, after a compactification of some of the transverse dimensions, a five-dimensional Randall-Sundrum II like brane-world set-up in heterotic string theory. As a by-product, we present a new proof of anomaly cancellation between those from the chiral matter and the anomaly inflow onto the brane without small instanton.

Chiral Zero Modes on Intersecting Heterotic 5-branes

We show that there exist two 27 and one 27bar of E6, net one chiral supermultiplet as zero modes localized on the intersecting 5-branes in the E8 x E8 heterotic string theory. A heterotic background is constructed by the standard embedding in the smeared solution, and the Dirac equation is solved explicitly on this background. It provides, after a compactification of some of the transverse dimensions, a Randall-Sundrum II like brane-world set-up in heterotic string theory.

Remarks on Phase Transitions in Matrix Models and N=1 Supersymmetric Gauge Theory

A hermitian one-matrix model with an even quartic potential exhibits a third-order phase transition when the cuts of the matrix model curve coalesce. We use the known solutions of this matrix model to compute effective superpotentials of an N=1, SU(N) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory coupled to an adjoint superfield, following the techniques developed by Dijkgraaf and Vafa. These solutions automatically satisfy the quantum tracelessness condition and describe a breaking to SU(N/2) x SU(N/2) x U(1). We show that the value of the effective superpotential is smooth at the transition point, and that the two-cut (broken) phase is more favored than the one-cut (unbroken) phase below the critical scale. The U(1) coupling constant diverges due to the massless monopole, thereby demonstrating Ferrari's general formula. We also briefly discuss the implication of the Painleve II equation arising in the double scaling limit.

Modular Invariant Critical Superstrings on Four-dimensional Minkowski Space $\times$ Two-dimensional Black Hole

Extending the seminal work of Bilal and Gervais, we construct a tachyon-free, modular invariant partition function for critical superstrings on four-dimensional Minkowski x two-dimensional black hole. This model may be thought of as an SL(2,R)/U(1) version of Gepner models and corresponds to a conifold point on the moduli space of Calabi-Yau compactifications. We directly deal with N=2, c=9 unitary superconformal characters. Modular invariance is achieved by requiring the string to have a momentum along an extra noncompact direction, in agreement with the picture of singular CFTs advocated by Witten. The four-dimensional massless spectrum coincides with that of the tensionless strings, suggesting a possible dual description of type II strings on a conifold in terms of two intersecting NS5-branes. An interesting relation to D=6, N=4 gauged supergravity is also discussed.

On Discrete U-duality in M-theory

We give a complete set of generators for the discrete exceptional U-duality groups of toroidal compactified type II theory and M-theory in d>2. For this, we use the DSZ quantization in d=4 as originally proposed by Hull and Townsend, and determine the discrete group inducing integer shifts on the charge lattice. It is generated by fundamental unipotents, which are constructed by exponentiating the Chevalley generators of the corresponding Lie algebra. We then extend a method suggested by the above authors and used by Sen for the heterotic string to get the discrete U-duality group in d=3, thereby obtaining a quantized symmetry in d=3 from a d=4 quantization condition. This is studied first in a toy model, corresponding to d=5 simple supergravity, and then applied to M-theory. It turns out that, in the toy model, the resulting U-duality group in d=3 is strictly smaller than the one generated by the fundamental unipotents corresponding to all Chevalley generators. However, for M-theory, both groups agree. We illustrate the compactification to d=3 by an embedding of d=4 particle multiplets into the d=3 theory.

The Painleve Property, W Algebras and Toda Field Theories associated with Hyperbolic Kac-Moody Algebras

We show that the Painlevé test is useful not only for probing (non-)integrability but also for finding the values of spins of conserved currents (W currents) in Toda field theories (TFTs). In the case of the TFTs based on simple Lie algebras the locations of resonances are shown to give precisely the spins of conserved W currents. We apply this test to TFTs based on strictly hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras and show that there exist no resonances other than that at n=2, which corresponds to the energy-momentum tensor, indicating their non-integrability. We also check by direct calculation that there are no spin-3 nor -4 conserved currents for all the hyperbolic TFTs in agreement with the result of our Painlevé analysis.

Rational Conformal Field Theory and Multi-Wormhole Partition Function in 3-dimensional Gravity

We study the Turaev-Viro invariant as the Euclidean Chern-Simons-Witten gravity partition function with positive cosmological constant. After explaining why it can be identified as the partition function of 3-dimensional gravity, we show that the initial data of the TV invariant can be constructed from the duality data of a certain class of rational conformal field theories, and that, in particular, the original Turaev-Viro's initial data is associated with the $A_{k+1}$ modular invariant WZW model. As a corollary we then show that the partition function $Z(M)$ is bounded from above by $Z((S^2\times S^1)^{\sharp g}) =(S_{00})^{-2g+2}\sim Λ^{-\frac{3g-3}{2}}$, where $g$ is the smallest genus of handlebodies with which $M$ can be presented by Hegaard splitting. $Z(M)$ is generically very large near $Λ\sim +0$if $M$ is neither $S^3$ nor a lens space, and many-wormholeconfigurations dominate near $Λ\sim +0$ in the sense that $Z(M)$ generically tends to diverge faster as the ``number of wormholes'' $g$ becomes larger.

3-dimensional Gravity from the Turaev-Viro Invariant

We study the $q$-deformed su(2) spin network as a 3-dimensional quantum gravity model. We show that in the semiclassical continuum limit the Turaev-Viro invariant obtained recently defines naturally regularized path-integral $\grave{\rm a}$ la Ponzano-Regge, In which a contribution from the cosmological term is effectively included. The regularization dependent cosmological constant is found to be ${4π^2\over k^2} +O(k^{-4})$, where $q^{2k}=1$. We also discuss the relation to the Euclidean Chern-Simons-Witten gravity in 3-dimension.
