Complex geometry of moment-angle manifolds

Moment-angle manifolds provide a wide class of examples of non-Kaehler compact complex manifolds. A complex moment-angle manifold Z is constructed via certain combinatorial data, called a complete simplicial fan. In the case of rational fans, the manifold Z is the total space of a holomorphic bundle over a toric variety with fibres compact complex tori. In general, a complex moment-angle manifold Z is equipped with a canonical holomorphic foliation F which is equivariant with respect to the (C*)^m-action. Examples of moment-angle manifolds include Hopf manifolds of Vaisman type, Calabi-Eckmann manifolds, and their deformations. We construct transversely Kaehler metrics on moment-angle manifolds, under some restriction on the combinatorial data. We prove that any Kaehler submanifold (or, more generally, a Fujiki class C subvariety) in such a moment-angle manifold is contained in a leaf of the foliation F. For a generic moment-angle manifold Z in its combinatorial class, we prove that all subvarieties are moment-angle manifolds of smaller dimension. This implies, in particular, that the algebraic dimension of Z is zero.

On toric generators in the unitary and special unitary bordism rings

We construct a new family of toric manifolds generating the unitary bordism ring. Each manifold in the family is the complex projectivisation of the sum of a line bundle and a trivial bundle over a complex projective space. We also construct a family of special unitary quasitoric manifolds which contains polynomial generators of the special unitary bordism ring with 2 inverted in dimensions >8. Each manifold in the latter family is obtained from an iterated complex projectivisation of a sum of line bundles by amending the complex structure to make the first Chern class vanish.

On the cohomology of quotients of moment-angle complexes

We describe the cohomology of the quotient Z_K/H of a moment-angle complex Z_K by a freely acting subtorus H in T^m by establishing a ring isomorphism of H*(Z_K/H,R) with an appropriate Tor-algebra of the face ring R[K], with coefficients in an arbitrary commutative ring R with unit. This result was stated in [BP02, 7.37] for a field R, but the argument was not sufficiently detailed in the case of nontrivial H and finite characteristic. We prove the collapse of the corresponding Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence using the extended functoriality of Tor with respect to `strongly homotopy multiplicative' maps in the category DASH, following Munkholm [Mu74]. Our collapse result does not follow from the general results of Gugenheim-May and Munkholm.

Homotopy types of moment-angle complexes for flag complexes

We study the homotopy types of moment-angle complexes, or equivalently, of complements of coordinate subspace arrangements. The overall aim is to identify the simplicial complexes K for which the corresponding moment-angle complex Z_K has the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres or a connected sum of sphere products. When K is flag, we identify in algebraic and combinatorial terms those K for which Z_K is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres, and give a combinatorial formula for the number of spheres in the wedge. This extends results of Berglund and Joellenbeck on Golod rings and homotopy theoretical results of the first and third authors. We also establish a connection between minimally non-Golod rings and moment-angle complexes Z_K which are homotopy equivalent to a connected sum of sphere products. We go on to show that for any flag complex K the loop spaces of Z_K and DJ(K) are homotopy equivalent to a product of spheres and loops on spheres when localised rationally or at any odd prime.

Toric Topology

Toric topology emerged in the end of the 1990s on the borders of equivariant topology, algebraic and symplectic geometry, combinatorics and commutative algebra. It has quickly grown up into a very active area with many interdisciplinary links and applications, and continues to attract experts from different fields. The key players in toric topology are moment-angle manifolds, a family of manifolds with torus actions defined in combinatorial terms. Their construction links to combinatorial geometry and algebraic geometry of toric varieties via the related notion of a quasitoric manifold. Discovery of remarkable geometric structures on moment-angle manifolds led to seminal connections with the classical and modern areas of symplectic, Lagrangian and non-Kaehler complex geometry. A related categorical construction of moment-angle complexes and their generalisations, polyhedral products, provides a universal framework for many fundamental constructions of homotopical topology. The study of polyhedral products is now evolving into a separate area of homotopy theory, with strong links to other areas of toric topology. A new perspective on torus action has also contributed to the development of classical areas of algebraic topology, such as complex cobordism. The book contains lots of open problems and is addressed to experts interested in new ideas linking all the subjects involved, as well as to graduate students and young researchers ready to enter into a beautiful new area.

Geometric structures on moment-angle manifolds

The moment-angle complex Z_K is cell complex with a torus action constructed from a finite simplicial complex K. When this construction is applied to a triangulated sphere K or, in particular, to the boundary of a simplicial polytope, the result is a manifold. Moment-angle manifolds and complexes are central objects in toric topology, and currently are gaining much interest in homotopy theory, complex and symplectic geometry. The geometric aspects of the theory of moment-angle complexes are the main theme of this survey. We review constructions of non-Kahler complex-analytic structures on moment-angle manifolds corresponding to polytopes and complete simplicial fans, and describe invariants of these structures, such as the Hodge numbers and Dolbeault cohomology rings. Symplectic and Lagrangian aspects of the theory are also of considerable interest. Moment-angle manifolds appear as level sets for quadratic Hamiltonians of torus actions, and can be used to construct new families of Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in a complex space, complex projective space or toric varieties.

Hamiltonian minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in toric varieties

Hamiltonian minimality (H-minimality) for Lagrangian submanifolds is a symplectic analogue of Riemannian minimality. A Lagrangian submanifold is called H-minimal if the variations of its volume along all Hamiltonian vector fields are zero. This notion was introduced in the work of Y.-G. Oh in connection with the celebrated Arnold conjecture on the number of fixed points of a Hamiltonian symplectomorphism. In the previous works the authors defined and studied a family of H-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in complex space arising from intersections of Hermitian quadrics. Here we extend this construction to define H-minimal submanifolds in toric varieties.

Intersections of quadrics, moment-angle manifolds, and Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian embeddings

We study the topology of Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds N in C^m constructed from intersections of real quadrics in a work of the first author. This construction is linked via an embedding criterion to the well-known Delzant construction of Hamiltonian toric manifolds. We establish the following topological properties of N: every N embeds as a submanifold in the corresponding moment-angle manifold Z, and every N is the total space of two different fibrations, one over the torus T^{m-n} with fibre a real moment-angle manifold R, and another over a quotient of R by a finite group with fibre a torus. These properties are used to produce new examples of Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds with quite complicated topology.

Complex-analytic structures on moment-angle manifolds

We show that the moment-angle manifolds corresponding to complete simplicial fans admit non-Kaehler complex-analytic structures. This generalises the known construction of complex-analytic structures on polytopal moment-angle manifolds, coming from identifying them as LVM-manifolds. We proceed by describing Dolbeault cohomology and some Hodge numbers of moment-angle manifolds by applying the Borel spectral sequence to holomorphic principal bundles over toric varieties.

Moment-angle complexes from simplicial posets

We extend the construction of moment-angle complexes to simplicial posets by associating a certain T^m-space Z_S to an arbitrary simplicial poset S on m vertices. Face rings Z[S] of simplicial posets generalise those of simplicial complexes, and give rise to new classes of Gorenstein and Cohen--Macaulay rings. Our primary motivation is to study the face rings Z[S] by topological methods. The space Z_S has many important topological properties of the original moment-angle complex Z_K associated to a simplicial complex K. In particular, we prove that the integral cohomology algebra of Z_S is isomorphic to the Tor-algebra of the face ring Z[S]. This leads directly to a generalisation of Hochster's theorem, expressing the algebraic Betti numbers of the ring Z[S] in terms of the homology of full subposets in S. Finally, we estimate the total amount of homology of Z_S from below by proving the toral rank conjecture for the moment-angle complexes Z_S.

Moment-angle manifolds and complexes. Lecture notes KAIST'2010

These are notes of the lectures given during the Toric Topology Workshop at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in February 2010. We describe several approaches to moment-angle manifolds and complexes, including the intersections of quadrics, complements of subspace arrangements and level sets of moment maps. We overview the known results on the topology of moment-angle complexes, including the description of their cohomology rings, as well as the homotopy and diffeomorphism types in some particular cases. We also discuss complex-analytic structures on moment-angle manifolds and methods for calculating invariants of these structures.

Toric cohomological rigidity of simple convex polytopes

A simple convex polytope $P$ is \emph{cohomologically rigid} if its combinatorial structure is determined by the cohomology ring of a quasitoric manifold over $P$. Not every $P$ has this property, but some important polytopes such as simplices or cubes are known to be cohomologically rigid. In this article we investigate the cohomological rigidity of polytopes and establish it for several new classes of polytopes including products of simplices. Cohomological rigidity of $P$ is related to the \emph{bigraded Betti numbers} of its \emph{Stanley--Reisner ring}, another important invariants coming from combinatorial commutative algebra.

Cohomology of face rings, and torus actions

In this survey article we present several new developments of `toric topology' concerning the cohomology of face rings (also known as Stanley-Reisner algebras). We prove that the integral cohomology algebra of the moment-angle complex Z_K (equivalently, of the complement U(K) of the coordinate subspace arrangement) determined by a simplicial complex K is isomorphic to the Tor-algebra of the face ring of K. Then we analyse Massey products and formality of this algebra by using a generalisation of Hochster's theorem. We also review several related combinatorial results and problems.

Torus graphs and simplicial posets

For several important classes of manifolds acted on by the torus, the information about the action can be encoded combinatorially by a regular n-valent graph with vector labels on its edges, which we refer to as the torus graph. By analogy with the GKM-graphs, we introduce the notion of equivariant cohomology of a torus graph, and show that it is isomorphic to the face ring of the associated simplicial poset. This extends a series of previous results on the equivariant cohomology of torus manifolds. As a primary combinatorial application, we show that a simplicial poset is Cohen-Macaulay if its face ring is Cohen-Macaulay. This completes the algebraic characterisation of Cohen-Macaulay posets initiated by Stanley. We also study blow-ups of torus graphs and manifolds from both the algebraic and the topological points of view.

Colimits, Stanley-Reisner algebras, and loop spaces

We study diagrams associated with a finite simplicial complex K, in various algebraic and topological categories. We relate their colimits to familiar structures in algebra, combinatorics, geometry and topology. These include: right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups (and their complex analogues, which we call circulation groups); Stanley-Reisner algebras and coalgebras; Davis and Januszkiewicz's spaces DJ(K) associated with toric manifolds and their generalisations; and coordinate subspace arrangements. When K is a flag complex, we extend well-known results on Artin and Coxeter groups by confirming that the relevant circulation group is homotopy equivalent to the space of loops $ΩDJ(K)$. We define homotopy colimits for diagrams of topological monoids and topological groups, and show they commute with the formation of classifying spaces in a suitably generalised sense. We deduce that the homotopy colimit of the appropriate diagram of topological groups is a model for $ΩDJ(K)$ for an arbitrary complex K, and that the natural projection onto the original colimit is a homotopy equivalence when K is flag. In this case, the two models are compatible.
