Factoring in the hyperelliptic Torelli group

The hyperelliptic Torelli group is the subgroup of the mapping class group consisting of elements that act trivially on the homology of the surface and that also commute with some fixed hyperelliptic involution. The authors and Putman proved that this group is generated by Dehn twists about separating curves fixed by the hyperelliptic involution. In this paper, we introduce an algorithmic approach to factoring a wide class of elements of the hyperelliptic Torelli group into such Dehn twists, and apply our methods to several basic elements.

Point pushing, homology, and the hyperelliptic involution

The hyperelliptic Torelli group is the subgroup of the mapping class group consisting of elements that act trivially on the homology of the surface and that also commute with some fixed hyperelliptic involution. We prove a Birman exact sequence for hyperelliptic Torelli groups, and we show that this sequence splits. As a consequence, we show that the hyperelliptic Torelli group is generated by Dehn twists if and only if it is generated by reducible elements. We also give an application to the kernel of the Burau representation.

Addendum to: Commensurations of the Johnson kernel

Let K(S) be the subgroup of the extended mapping class group, Mod(S), generated by Dehn twists about separating curves. In our earlier paper, we showed that Comm(K(S)) and Aut(K(S)) are both isomorphic to Mod(S) when S is a closed, connected, orientable surface of genus g at least 4. By modifying our original proof, we show that the same result holds for g at leat 3, thus confirming Farb's conjecture in all cases (the statement is not true for any g less than 3).

On the linearity problem for mapping class groups

Formanek and Procesi have demonstrated that Aut(F_n) is not linear for n >2. Their technique is to construct nonlinear groups of a special form, which we call FP-groups, and then to embed a special type of automorphism group, which we call a poison group, in Aut(F_n), from which they build an FP-group. We first prove that poison groups cannot be embedded in certain mapping class groups. We then show that no FP-groups of any form can be embedded in mapping class groups. Thus the methods of Formanek and Procesi fail in the case of mapping class groups, providing strong evidence that mapping class groups may in fact be linear.
