Multi-cell Content Caching: Optimization for Cost and Information Freshness

In multi-access edge computing (MEC) systems, there are multiple local cache servers caching contents to satisfy the users' requests, instead of letting the users download via the remote cloud server. In this paper, a multi-cell content scheduling problem (MCSP) in MEC systems is considered. Taking into account jointly the freshness of the cached contents and the traffic data costs, we study how to schedule content updates along time in a multi-cell setting. Different from single-cell scenarios, a user may have multiple candidate local cache servers, and thus the caching decisions in all cells must be jointly optimized. We first prove that MCSP is NP-hard, then we formulate MCSP using integer linear programming, by which the optimal scheduling can be obtained for small-scale instances. For problem solving of large scenarios, via a mathematical reformulation, we derive a scalable optimization algorithm based on repeated column generation. Our performance evaluation shows the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in comparison to an off-the-shelf commercial solver and a popularity-based caching.

Lane Detection Model Based on Spatio-Temporal Network With Double Convolutional Gated Recurrent Units

Lane detection is one of the indispensable and key elements of self-driving environmental perception. Many lane detection models have been proposed, solving lane detection under challenging conditions, including intersection merging and splitting, curves, boundaries, occlusions and combinations of scene types. Nevertheless, lane detection will remain an open problem for some time to come. The ability to cope well with those challenging scenes impacts greatly the applications of lane detection on advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs). In this paper, a spatio-temporal network with double Convolutional Gated Recurrent Units (ConvGRUs) is proposed to address lane detection in challenging scenes. Both of ConvGRUs have the same structures, but different locations and functions in our network. One is used to extract the information of the most likely low-level features of lane markings. The extracted features are input into the next layer of the end-to-end network after concatenating them with the outputs of some blocks. The other one takes some continuous frames as its input to process the spatio-temporal driving information. Extensive experiments on the large-scale TuSimple lane marking challenge dataset and Unsupervised LLAMAS dataset demonstrate that the proposed model can effectively detect lanes in the challenging driving scenes. Our model can outperform the state-of-the-art lane detection models.

Electronic structure of a Si-containing topological Dirac semimetal CaAl2Si2

There has been an upsurge in the discovery of topological quantum materials, where various topological insulators and semimetals have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. However, only very few of them contains silicon, the most widely used element in electronic industry. Recently, ternary compound CaAl2Si2 has been predicted to be a topological Dirac semimetal, hosting Lorentz-symmetry-violating quasiparticles with a strongly tilted conical band dispersion. In this work, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we investigated the comprehensive electronic structure of CaAl2Si2. A pair of topological Dirac crossings is observed along the kz direction, in good agreement with the ab initio calculations, confirming the topological Dirac semimetal nature of the compound. Our study expands the topological material family on Si-containing compounds, which have great application potential in realizing low-cost, nontoxic electronic device with topological quantum states.

Cyclic Prefix Adaptation with Constant Overall Symbol Time for DFT-spread-OFDM and OFDM

For DFT-spread-OFDM or OFDM, if the delay spread varies in a wide range and the symbol duration is relatively short, adapting the cyclic prefix (CP) duration rather than using a fixed one may significantly improve the spectral efficiency while preventing inter-symbol interference (ISI). In practice, it may be beneficial to have a constant overall DFT-spread-OFDM/OFDM symbol time, which is the sum of the duration of a CP and the duration of a data portion. We propose to adapt the CP duration to the delay spread without changing the overall symbol time for DFT-spread-OFDM or OFDM, and address implementation challenges. In particular, we propose changing the clocking rate of ADC and DAC or using a Farrow filter to reduce the computational complexity of arbitrary-size DFT/IDFT resulting from the adaptation.

Using metallic photonic crystals as visible light sources

In this paper we study numerically and experimentally the possibility of using metallic photonic crystals (PCs) of different geometries (log-piles, direct and inverse opals) as visible light sources. It is found that by tuning geometrical parameters of a direct opal PC one can achieve substantial reduction of the emissivity in the infrared along with its increase in the visible. We take into account disorder of the PC elements in their sizes and positions, and get quantitative agreement between the numerical and experimental results. We analyze the influence of known temperature-resistant refractory host materials necessary for fixing the PC elements, and find that PC effects become completely destroyed at high temperatures due to the host absorption. Therefore, creating PC-based visible light sources requires that low-absorbing refractory materials for embedding medium be found.
