Divergence of weighted square averages in $L^1$

We study convergence of ergodic averages along squares with polynomial weights. For a given polynomial $P\in \mathbb{Z}[\cdot]$, consider the set of all $θ\in[0,1)$ such that for every aperiodic system $(X,μ, T)$ there is a function $f\in L^1(X,μ)$ such that the weighted averages along squares $$ {\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N} e(P(n)θ)T^{n^2}f $$ diverge on a set with positive measure. We show that this set is residual and includes the rational numbers as well as a dense set of Liouville numbers. This on one hand extends the divergence result for squares in $L^1$ of the first author and Mauldin and on the other hand shows that the convergence result for linear weights for squares due to the second author and Krause in $L^p$, $p>1$ does not hold for $p=1$.

Embeddability of real and positive operators

Embedding discrete Markov chains into continuous ones is a famous open problem in probability theory with many applications. Inspired by recent progress, we study the closely related questions of embeddability of real and positive operators into real or positive $C_0$-semigroups, respectively, on finite and infinite-dimensional separable sequence spaces. For the real case we give both sufficient and necessary conditions for embeddability. For positive operators we present necessary conditions for positive embeddability including a full description for the $2\times 2$-case. Moreover, we show that real embeddability is topologically typical for real contractions on $\ell^2$.

Power bounded operators and the mean ergodic theorem for subsequences

Let $T$ be a power bounded Hilbert space operator without unimodular eigenvalues. We show that the subsequential ergodic averages $N^{-1}\sum_{n=1}^N T^{a_n}$ converge in the strong operator topology for a wide range of sequences $(a_n)$, including the integer part of most of subpolynomial Hardy functions. Moreover, we show that the weighted averages $N^{-1}\sum_{n=1}^N e^{2πi g(n)}T^{a_n}$ also converge for many reasonable functions $g$. In particular, we generalize the polynomial mean ergodic theorem for power bounded operators due to ter Elst and the second author \cite{tEM} to real polynomials and polynomial weights.

Rigidity of contractions on Hilbert spaces

We study the asymptotic behaviour of contractive operators and strongly continuous semigroups on separable Hilbert spaces using the notion of rigidity. In particular, we show that a "typical" contraction $T$ contains the unit circle times the identity operator in the strong limit set of its powers, while $T^{n_j}$ converges weakly to zero along a sequence $\{n_j\}$ with density one. The continuous analogue is presented for isometric ang unitary $C_0$-(semi)groups.

Linear sequences and weighted ergodic theorems

We present a simple way to produce good weights for several types of ergodic theorem including the Wiener-Wintner type multiple return time theorem and the multiple polynomial ergodic theorem. These weights are deterministic and come from orbits of certain bounded linear operators on Banach spaces. This extends the known results for nilsequences and return time sequences of the form (g(S^ny)) for a measure preserving system (Y,S) and g\in L^\infty(Y), avoiding in the latter case the problem of finding the full measure set of appropriate points y.

Hilbertian Jamison sequences and rigid dynamical systems

A strictly increasing sequence (n_k) of positive integers is said to be a Hilbertian Jamison sequence if for any bounded operator T on a separable Hilbert space such that the supremum over k of the norms ||T^{n_k}|| is finite, the set of eigenvalues of modulus 1 of T is at most countable. We first give a complete characterization of such sequences. We then turn to the study of rigidity sequences (n_k) for weakly mixing dynamical systems on measure spaces, and give various conditions, some of which are closely related to the Jamison condition, for a sequence to be a rigidity sequence. We obtain on our way a complete characterization of topological rigidity and uniform rigidity sequences for linear dynamical systems, and we construct in this framework examples of dynamical systems which are both weakly mixing in the measure-theoretic sense and uniformly rigid.

Large values of the Gowers-Host-Kra seminorms

The \emph{Gowers uniformity norms} $\|f\|_{U^k(G)}$ of a function $f: G \to \C$ on a finite additive group $G$, together with the slight variant $\|f\|_{U^k([N])}$ defined for functions on a discrete interval $[N] := \{1,...,N\}$, are of importance in the modern theory of counting additive patterns (such as arithmetic progressions) inside large sets. Closely related to these norms are the \emph{Gowers-Host-Kra seminorms} $\|f\|_{U^k(X)}$ of a measurable function $f: X \to \C$ on a measure-preserving system $X = (X, {\mathcal X}, μ, T)$. Much recent effort has been devoted to the question of obtaining necessary and sufficient conditions for these Gowers norms to have non-trivial size (e.g. at least $η$ for some small $η> 0$), leading in particular to the inverse conjecture for the Gowers norms, and to the Host-Kra classification of characteristic factors for the Gowers-Host-Kra seminorms. In this paper we investigate the near-extremal (or "property testing") version of this question, when the Gowers norm or Gowers-Host-Kra seminorm of a function is almost as large as it can be subject to an $L^\infty$ or $L^p$ bound on its magnitude. Our main results assert, roughly speaking, that this occurs if and only if $f$ behaves like a polynomial phase, possibly localised to a subgroup of the domain; this can be viewed as a higher-order analogue of classical results of Russo and Fournier, and are also related to the polynomiality testing results over finite fields of Blum-Luby-Rubinfeld and Alon-Kaufman-Krivelevich-Litsyn-Ron. We investigate the situation further for the $U^3$ norms, which are associated to 2-step nilsequences, and find that there is a threshold behaviour, in that non-trivial 2-step nilsequences (not associated with linear or quadratic phases) only emerge once the $U^3$ norm is at most $2^{-1/8}$ of the $L^\infty$ norm.

On typical properties of Hilbert space operators

We study the typical behavior of bounded linear operators on infinite dimensional complex separable Hilbert spaces in the norm, strong-star, strong, weak polynomial and weak topologies. In particular, we investigate typical spectral properties, the problem of unitary equivalence of typical operators, and their embeddability into C_0-semigroups. Our results provide information on the applicability of Baire category methods in the theory of Hilbert space operators.

Nonconventional ergodic averages and multiple recurrence for von Neumann dynamical systems

The Furstenberg recurrence theorem (or equivalently, Szemerédi's theorem) can be formulated in the language of von Neumann algebras as follows: given an integer $k \geq 2$, an abelian finite von Neumann algebra $(\M,τ)$ with an automorphism $α: \M \to \M$, and a non-negative $a \in \M$ with $τ(a)>0$, one has $\liminf_{N \to \infty} \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n=1}^N \Re τ(a α^n (a) ... α^{(k-1)n} (a)) > 0$; a subsequent result of Host and Kra shows that this limit exists. In particular, $\Re τ(a α^n (a) >... α^{(k-1)n} (a)) > 0$ for all $n$ in a set of positive density. From the von Neumann algebra perspective, it is thus natural to ask to what extent these results remain true when the abelian hypothesis is dropped. All three claims hold for $k = 2$, and we show in this paper that all three claims hold for all $k$ when the von Neumann algebra is asymptotically abelian, and that the last two claims hold for $k=3$ when the von Neumann algebra is ergodic. However, we show that the first claim can fail for $k=3$ even with ergodicity, the second claim can fail for $k \geq 4$ even assuming ergodicity, and the third claim can fail for $k=3$ without ergodicity, or $k \geq 5$ and odd assuming ergodicity. The second claim remains open for non-ergodic systems with $k=3$, and the third claim remains open for ergodic systems with $k=4$.

On the entangled ergodic theorem

We study the convergence of the so-called entangled ergodic averages $\frac{1}{N^k}\sum_{n_1,...,n_k=1}^{N}T_m^{n_{α(m)}}A_{m-1}T_{m-1}^{n_{α(m-1)}}A_{m-2}...A_1T_1^{n_{α(1)}},$ where $k\leq m$ and $α:\{1,...,m\}\to\{1,...,k\}$ is a surjective map. We show that, on general Banach spaces and without any restriction on the partition $α$, the above averages converge strongly as $N\to \infty$ under some quite weak compactness assumptions on the operators $T_j$ and $A_j$. A formula for the limit based on the spectral analysis of the operators $T_j$ and the continuous version of the result are presented as well.

Category theorems for stable semigroups

Inspired by the classical category theorems of Halmos and Rohlin for the discrete measure preserving transformations, we prove analogous results in the abstract setting of unitary and isometric C_0-semigroups on a separable Hilbert space. More presicely, we show that the set of all weakly stable unitary groups (isometric semigroups) is of first category, while the set of all almost weakly stable unitary groups (isometric semigroups) is residual for an appropriate topology.

The growth of a C_0-semigroup characterised by its cogenerator

We characterise contractivity, boundedness and polynomial boundedness for a C_0-semigroup on a Banach space in terms of its cogenerator V (or the Cayley transform of the generator) or its resolvent. In particular, we extend results of Gomilko and Brenner, Thomee and show that polynomial boundedness of a semigroup implies polynomial boundedness of its cogenerator. As is shown by an example, the result is optimal. For analytic semigroups we show that the converse holds, i.e., polynomial boundedness of the cogenerators implies polynomial boundedness of the semigroup. In addition, we show by simple examples in (C^2,\|\cdot\|_p), p \neq 2, that our results on the characterisation of contractivity are sharp. These examples also show that the famous Foias-Sz.-Nagy theorem on cogenerators of contraction semigroups on Hilbert spaces fails in (C^2,\|\cdot\|_p) for p\neq 2.
