A characterization of hyperbolic rational maps

In the early 1980's Thurston gave a topological characterization of rational maps whose critical points have finite iterated orbits (\cite{Th,DH1}): given a topological branched covering $F$ of the two sphere with finite critical orbits, if $F$ has no Thurston obstructions then $F$ possesses an invariant complex structure (up to isotopy), and is combinatorially equivalent to a rational map. We extend this theory to the setting of rational maps with infinite critical orbits, assuming a certain kind of hyperbolicity. Our study includes also holomorphic dynamical systems that arise as coverings over disconnected Riemann surfaces of finite type. The obstructions we encounter are similar to those of Thurston. We give concrete criteria for verifying whether or not such obstructions exist. Among many possible applications, these results can be used for example to construct holomorphic maps with prescribed dynamical properties; or to give a parameter description, both local and global, of bifurcations of complex dynamical systems.

Spinning deformations of rational maps

We analyze a real one-parameter family of quasiconformal deformations of a hyperbolic rational map known as {\em spinning}. We show that under fairly general hypotheses, the limit of spinning either exists and is unique, or else converges to infinity in the moduli space of rational maps of a fixed degree. When the limit exists, it has either a parabolic fixed point, or a pre-periodic critical point in the Julia set, depending on the combinatorics of the data defining the deformation. The proofs are soft and rely on two ingredients: the construction of a Riemann surface containing the closure of the family, and an analysis of the geometric limits of some simple dynamical systems. An interpretation in terms of Teichmüller theory is presented as well.

Surgery on postcritically finite rational maps by blowing up an arc

Using Thurston's characterization of postcritically finite rational functions as branched coverings of the sphere to itself, we give a new method of constructing new conformal dynamical systems out of old ones. Let $f(z)$ be a rational map and suppose that the postcritical set $P(f)$ is finite. Let $α$ be an embedded closed arc in the sphere and suppose that $f|α$ is a homeomorphism. Define a branched covering $g$ as follows. Cut the sphere open along $α$. Glue in a closed disc $D$. Map $S^{2} - \Int (D)$ via $f$ and $\Int (D)$ by a homeomorphism to the complement of $f(α)$. We prove theorems which give combinatorial conditions on $f$ and $α$ for $g$ to be equivalent in the sense of Thurston to a rational map. The main idea in our proofs is a general theorem which forces a possible obstruction for $g$ away from the disc $D$ on which the new dynamics is defined.
