On the non-monotonicity of entropy for a class of real quadratic rational maps

We prove that the entropy function on the moduli space of real quadratic rational maps is not monotonic by exhibiting a continuum of disconnected level sets. This entropy behavior is in stark contrast with the case of polynomial maps, and establishes a conjecture on the failure of monotonicity for bimodal real quadratic rational maps of shape $(+-+)$ which was posed in arXiv:1901.03458 based on experimental evidence.

Presentations of NET maps

A branched covering $f: S^2 \to S^2$ is a nearly Euclidean Thurston (NET) map if each critical point is simple and its postcritical set has exactly four points. We show that up to equivalence, each NET map admits a normal form in terms of simple affine data. This data can then be used as input for algorithms developed for the computation of fundamental invariants, now systematically tabulated in a large census.

Pullback invariants of Thurston maps

Associated to a Thurston map $f: S^2 \to S^2$ with postcritical set $P$ are several different invariants obtained via pullback: a relation on the set of free homotopy classes of curves in $S^2- P$, a linear operator on the free $\R$-module generated by these homotopy classes of curves, a virtual endomorphism on the pure mapping class group, an analytic self-map of an associated Teichmueller space, and an analytic self-correspondence on an associated moduli space. Viewing all of these objects as invariants of $f$, we investigate harmonious relationships between their properties.

Finite type coarse expanding conformal dynamics

We continue the study of non-invertible topological dynamical systems with expanding behavior. We introduce the class of {\em finite type} systems which are characterized by the condition that, up to rescaling and uniformly bounded distortion, there are only finitely many iterates. We show that subhyperbolic rational maps and finite subdivision rules (in the sense of Cannon, Floyd, Kenyon, and Parry) with bounded valence and mesh going to zero are of finite type. In addition, we show that the limit dynamical system associated to a selfsimilar, contracting, recurrent, level-transitive group action (in the sense of V. Nekrashevych) is of finite type. The proof makes essential use of an analog of the finiteness of cone types property enjoyed by hyperbolic groups.

Minimal Ahlfors regular conformal dimension of coarse conformal dynamics on the sphere

We prove that if the Ahlfors regular conformal dimension $Q$ of a topologically cxc map on the sphere $f: S^2 \to S^2$ is realized by some metric $d$ on $S^2$, then either Q=2 and $f$ is topologically conjugate to a semihyperbolic rational map with Julia set equal to the whole Riemann sphere, or $Q>2$ and $f$ is topologically conjugate to a map which lifts to an affine expanding map of a torus whose differential has distinct real eigenvalues. This is an analog of a known result for Gromov hyperbolic groups with two-sphere boundary, and our methods apply to give a new proof.

An algebraic formulation of Thurston's characterization of rational functions

Following Douady-Hubbard and Bartholdi-Nekrashevych, we give an algebraic formulation of Thurston's characterization of rational functions. The techniques developed are applied to the analysis of the dynamics on the set of free homotopy classes of simple closed curves induced by a rational function. The resulting finiteness results yield new information on the global dynamics of the pullback map on Teichmüller space used in the proof of the characterization theorem.

Examples of coarse expanding conformal maps

In previous work, a class of noninvertible topological dynamical systems $f: X \to X$ was introduced and studied; we called these {\em topologically coarse expanding conformal} systems. To such a system is naturally associated a preferred quasisymmetry (indeed, snowflake) class of metrics in which arbitrary iterates distort roundness and ratios of diameters by controlled amounts; we called this {\em metrically coarse expanding conformal}. In this note we extend the class of examples to several more familiar settings, give applications of our general methods, and discuss implications for the computation of conformal dimension.

Spinning deformations of rational maps

We analyze a real one-parameter family of quasiconformal deformations of a hyperbolic rational map known as {\em spinning}. We show that under fairly general hypotheses, the limit of spinning either exists and is unique, or else converges to infinity in the moduli space of rational maps of a fixed degree. When the limit exists, it has either a parabolic fixed point, or a pre-periodic critical point in the Julia set, depending on the combinatorics of the data defining the deformation. The proofs are soft and rely on two ingredients: the construction of a Riemann surface containing the closure of the family, and an analysis of the geometric limits of some simple dynamical systems. An interpretation in terms of Teichmüller theory is presented as well.
