The Earth Mover's Correlation

Since Pearson's correlation was introduced at the end of the 19th century many dependence measures have appeared in the literature. Recently we have suggested four simple axioms for dependence measures of random variables that take values in Hilbert spaces. We showed that distance correlation satisfies all these axioms. We still need a new measure of dependence because existing measures either do not work in general metric spaces (that are not Hilbert spaces) or they do not satisfy our four simple axioms. The earth mover's correlation introduced in this paper applies in general metric spaces and satisfies our four axioms (two of them in a weaker form).

Asymptotic properties of a random graph with duplications

We deal with a random graph model evolving in discrete time steps by duplicating and deleting the edges of randomly chosen vertices. We prove the existence of an a.s. asymptotic degree distribution, with streched exponential decay; more precisely, the proportion of vertices of degree $d$ tends to some positive number $c_d>0$ almost surely as the number of steps goes to infinity, and $c_d\sim (eπ)^{1/2} d^{1/4} e^{-2\sqrt d}$ holds as $d\to\infty$.

Further properties of a random graph with duplications and deletions

We deal with a random graph model where at each step, a vertex is chosen uniformly at random, and it is either duplicated or its edges are deleted. Duplication has a given probability. We analyse the limit distribution of the degree of a fixed vertex, and derive a.s. asymptotic bounds for the maximal degree. The model shows a phase transition phenomenon with respect to the probabilities of duplication and deletion.

Testing goodness-of-fit of random graph models

Random graphs are matrices with independent 0, 1 elements with probabilities determined by a small number of parameters. One of the oldest model is the Rasch model where the odds are ratios of positive numbers scaling the rows and columns. Later Persi Diaconis with his coworkers rediscovered the model for symmetric matrices and called the model beta. Here we give goodnes-of-fit tests for the model and extend the model to a version of the block model introduced by Holland, Laskey, and Leinhard.

A random graph model based on 3-interactions

We consider a random graph model evolving in discrete time-steps that is based on 3-interactions among vertices. Triangles, edges and vertices have different weights; objects with larger weight are more likely to participate in future interactions. We prove the scale free property of the model by exploring the asymptotic behaviour of the weight distribution. We also find the asympotics of the weight of a fixed vertex.

Degree distribution in the lower levels of the uniform recursive tree

In this note we consider the $k$th level of the uniform random recursive tree after $n$ steps, and prove that the proportion of nodes with degree greater than $t\log n$ converges to $(1-t)^k$ almost surely, as $n\to\infty$, for every $t\in(0,1)$. In addition, we show that the number of degree $d$ nodes in the first level is asymptotically Poisson distributed with mean 1; moreover, they are asymptotically independent for $d=1,2,...$.
