Non-linear extension of the dynamical linear response of spins; extended Heisenberg model

We introduce a new extended Heisenberg model. The model contains the orbital-dependent spins together with the retarded effects of spin torque. The model is directly derived from the dynamical linear response functions on the transversal spin fluctuation. Our model allows us to address effects which are not accessible via the usual Heisenberg model. With the model, we can describe not only the relaxation effects due to the Landau damping caused by the Stoner excitations, but also the nesting effects of the Fermi surface. We discuss possibilities of the extended Heisenberg model based on the high-resolution plots of the spin susceptibility for Fe.

A finite electric-field approach to evaluate the vertex correction for the screened Coulomb interaction in the quasiparticle self-consistent GW method

We apply the quasiparticle self-consistent GW method (QSGW) to slab models of ionic materials, LiF, KF, NaCl, MgO, and CaO, under electric field. Then we obtain the optical dielectric constants E(Slab) from the differences of the slopes of the electrostatic potential in the bulk and vacuum regions. Calculated E(Slab) show very good agreements with experiments. For example, we have E(Slab)=2.91 for MgO, in agreement with the experimental value E(Experiment)=2.96. This is in contrast to E(RPA)=2.37, which is calculated in the random-phase approximation for the bulk MgO in QSGW. After we explain the difference between the quasiparticle-based perturbation theory and the Greens function based perturbation theory, we interpret the large difference E(Slab)-E(RPA)=2.91-2.37 as the contribution from the vertex correction of the proper polarization which determines the screened Coulomb interaction W. Our result encourages the theoretical development of self-consistent G0W approximation along the line of QSGW self-consistency, as was performed by Shishkin, Marsman and Kresse [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 246403(2007)].

Role of non-locality in exchange-correlation for magnetic 2D van der Waals materials

To obtain accurate independent-particle descriptions for ferromagnetic two-dimensional van der Waals materials, we apply the quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ (QSGW) method to VI$_3$, CrI$_3$, CrGeTe$_3$, and Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. QSGW provides a description of the nonlocal exchange-correlation term in the one-particle Hamiltonian. The nonlocal term is important not only as the $U$ of density functional theory (DFT)+$U$ but also for differentiating occupied and unoccupied states in semiconductors. We show the limitations of DFT+$U$ in mimicking QSGW.

Model construction and a possibility of cuprate-like pairing in a new d9 nickelate superconductor (Nd,Sr)NiO2

Effective models are constructed for a newly discovered superconductor (Nd,Sr)NiO2, which has been considered as a possible nickelate analogue of the cuprates owing to the d9 electron configuration. Estimation of the effective interaction, which turns out to require a multiorbital model that takes account of all the orbitals involved on the Fermi surface, shows that the effective interactions are significantly larger than in the cuprates. A fluctuation exchange study for the model indicates that dx2-y2-wave superconductivity is likely to occur as in the cuprates, where the transition temperature in the nickelate can be lower from the cuprates due to the larger interaction and narrower bandwidth.

Accurate energy bands calculated by the hybrid quasiparticle self-consistent GW method implemented in the ecalj package

We have recently implemented a new version of the quasiparticle self-consistent GW (QSGW) method in the ecalj package released at http://github.com/tkotani/ecalj. Since the new version of the ecalj is numerically stable and accurate compared to the previous versions, we can perform calculations easily without being bothered with setting input parameters. Here we examine its ability to describe energy band properties, e.g., band-gap energy, eigenvalues at special points and effective mass, for variety of semiconductors and insulators. We treat C, Si, Ge, Sn, SiC (in 2H, 3C, and 4H structures), (Al, Ga, N)x(N, P, As, Pb), (Zn, Cd, Mg)x(O, S, Se, Te), SiO2, HfO2, ZrO2, SrTiO3, PbS, PbTe, MnO, NiO, and HgO. We propose that a hybrid QSGW method, where we mix 80 percent of QSGW and 20 percent of LDA, gives universally good agreement with experiments for these materials.

Direct theoretical evidence for weaker correlations in electron-doped and Hg-based hole-doped cuprates

Many important questions for high-$T_c$ cuprates are closely related to the insulating nature of parent compounds. While there has been intensive discussion on this issue, all arguments rely strongly on, or are closely related to, the correlation strength of the materials. Clear understanding has been seriously hampered by the absence of a direct measure of this interaction, traditionally denoted by $U$. Here, we report a first-principles estimation of $U$ for several different types of cuprates. The $U$ values clearly increase as a function of the inverse bond distance between apical oxygen and copper. Our results show that the electron-doped cuprates are less correlated than their hole-doped counterparts, which supports the Slater picture rather than the Mott picture. Further, the $U$ values significantly vary even among the hole-doped families. The correlation strengths of the Hg-cuprates are noticeably weaker than that of La$_2$CuO$_4$. Our results suggest that the strong correlation enough to induce Mott gap may not be a prerequisite for the high-$T_c$ superconductivity.

Quasiparticle self-consistent GW calculation of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and SrRuO$_3$:

Using quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ calculations, we re-examined the electronic structure of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and SrRuO$_3$. Our calculations show that the correlation effects beyond the conventional LDA (local density approximation) and GGA (generalized gradient approximation) are reasonably well captured by QS$GW$ self-energy without any {\it ad hoc} parameter or any ambiguity related to the double-counting and the downfolding issues. While the spectral weight transfer to the lower and upper Hubbard band is not observed, the noticeable bandwidth reduction and effective mass enhancement are obtained. Important features in the electronic structures that have been debated over the last decades such as the photoemission spectra at around $-3$ eV in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and the half-metallicity for SrRuO$_3$ are discussed in the light of our QS$GW$ results and in comparison with the previous studies. The promising aspects of QS$GW$ are highlighted as the first-principles calculation method to describe the moderately correlated 4$d$ transition metal oxides along with its limitations.

Quasiparticle self-consistent GW study of cuprates: electronic structure, model parameters, and the two-band theory for Tc

Despite decades of progress, an understanding of unconventional superconductivity still remains elusive. An important open question is about the material dependence of the superconducting properties. Using the quasiparticle self-consistent GW method, we re-examine the electronic structure of copper oxide high-Tc materials. We show that QSGW captures several important features, distinctive from the conventional LDA results. The energy level splitting between dx2-y2 and d3z2-r2 is significantly enlarged and the van Hove singularity point is lowered. The calculated results compare better than LDA with recent experimental results from resonant inelastic xray scattering and angle resolved photoemission experiments. This agreement with the experiments supports the previously suggested two-band theory for the material dependence of the superconducting transition temperature, Tc.

Formulation of the augmented plane-wave and muffin-tin orbital method

A mixed basis all-electron full-potential method, which uses two kinds of augmented waves, the augmented plane waves and the muffin-tin orbitals simultaneously, in addition to the local orbitals, was proposed by Kotani and van Schilfgaarde in Phys. Rev. B81, 125117(2010). We named it the PMT method. In this paper, this mixed basis method is reformulated on the basis of a new formalism named as the 3-component formalism, which is a mathematically transparent version of the additive augmentation originally due to Soler and Williams in Phys. Rev. B47, 6784(1993). Atomic forces are easily derived systematically. We discuss some problems in the mixed basis method and ways to manage them. In addition, we compare the method with the PAW method on the same footing. This PMT method is the basis for our new development of the quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ method in J.Phys.Soc.Jpn 83, 094711(2014).

Quasiparticle self-consistent GW method based on the augmented plane-wave and muffin-tin orbital method

We have developed the quasiparticle self-consistent GW (QSGW) method based on a recently developed mixed basis all-electron full-potential method (the PMT method), which uses the augmented plane waves (APWs) and the highly localized muffin-tin orbitals (MTOs) simultaneously. We call this PMT-QSGW. Because of the two kinds of augmented bases, we have efficient description of one-particle eigenfunctions in materials with small number of basis functions. In QSGW, we have to treat a static non-local exchange-correlation potential, which is generated from the self-energy. We expand the potential in the highly localized MTOs. This allows us to make stable interpolation of the self-energy in the whole Brillouin zone. In addition, we have improved the offset-Γ method for the Brillouin zone integration, so that we take into account the anisotropy of the screened Coulomb interaction in the calculation of the self-energy. For GaAs and cubic SiO2 , we checked convergence of calculated band gaps on cutoff parameters. PMT-QSGW is implemented in a first-principles electronic structure package ecalj, which is freely available from github.

Quasiparticle self-consistent GW study of LaNiO$_3$ and LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattice

Using quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ calculations we examined the electronic structure of LaNiO$_3$ and the LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattice. The effects of electron correlation in Ni-$d$ bands were reasonably well described without any {\it ad hoc} parameter and without the ambiguity related to the double-counting and downfolding issues. The effective mass is about $30\%$ enhanced compared to the GGA result. One band feature, which is believed to be essential for the cuprate-like superconductivity, is not realized and the central Fermi surface pocket does not disappear. Our result is consistent with a recent dynamical mean field calculation based on the $d$--$p$ model and in contrast to the result from a $d$-band only model.

Effects of alloying and strain on the magnetic properties of Fe$_{16}$N$_2$

The electronic structure and magnetic properties of pure and doped {Fe$_{16}$N$_2$} systems have been studied in the local-density (LDA) and quasiparticle self-consistent {\emph{GW}} approximations. The {\emph{GW}} magnetic moment of pure {Fe$_{16}$N$_2$} is somewhat larger compared to LDA but not anomalously large. The effects of doping on magnetic moment and exchange coupling were analyzed using the coherent potential approximation. The theoretical Curie temperature in pure {Fe$_{16}$N$_2$} is significantly higher than the measured value, which is attributed to the quality of available samples and the interpretation of experimental results. We found that different Fe sites contribute very differently to the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE), which offers a way to increase MAE by small additions of Co or Ti. MAE also increases under tetragonal strain.

Impact ionization rates for Si, GaAs, InAs, ZnS, and GaN in the $GW$ approximation

We present first-principles calculations of the impact ionization rate (IIR) in the $GW$ approximation ($GW$A) for semiconductors. The IIR is calculated from the quasiparticle (QP) width in the $GW$A, since it can be identified as the decay rate of a QP into lower energy QP plus an independent electron-hole pair. The quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ method was used to generate the noninteracting hamiltonian the $GW$A requires as input. Small empirical corrections were added so as to reproduce experimental band gaps. Our results are in reasonable agreement with previous work, though we observe some discrepancy. In particular we find high IIR at low energy in the narrow gap semiconductor InAs.
