Bubble phase at $ν=1/3$ for a spinless hollow-core interaction

We investigate fractional quantum Hall states for model interactions restricted to a repulsive hard-core. When the hard-core excludes relative angular momentum $m=1$ between spinless electrons the ground state at Landau level filling factor $ν=1/3$ is known to be exactly given by the Laughlin wavefunction. When we exclude relative angular momentum three only, Wòjs, Quinn and Yi have suggested the appearance of a liquid state with non-Laughlin correlations. We study this special hard-core interaction at filling factor 1/3 on the sphere, torus and cylinder geometry. An analysis of the charged and neutral gaps on the sphere geometry points to a gapless state. On the torus geometry the projected static structure factor has a two-peak feature pointing to one-dimensional density ordering. To clarify the nature of the ground state we perform extended DMRG studies on the cylinder geometry for up to 30 particles. The pair correlation function allows us to conclude that the ground state is a two-particle bubble phase.

Stochastic Estimation of Nuclear Level Density in the Nuclear Shell Model: An Application to Parity-Dependent Level Density in $^{58}$Ni

We introduce a novel method to obtain level densities in large-scale shell-model calculations. Our method is a stochastic estimation of eigenvalue count based on a shifted Krylov-subspace method, which enables us to obtain level densities of huge Hamiltonian matrices. This framework leads to a successful description of both low-lying spectroscopy and the experimentally observed equilibration of $J^π=2^+$ and $2^-$ states in $^{58}$Ni in a unified manner.

Gaplessness of the Gaffnian

We study the Gaffnian trial wavefunction proposed to describe fractional quantum Hall correlations at Bose filling factor $ν=2/3$ and Fermi filling $ν=2/5$. A family of Hamiltonians interpolating between a hard-core interaction for which the physics is known and a projector whose ground state is the Gaffnian is studied in detail. We give evidence for the absence of a gap by using large-scale exact diagonalizations in the spherical geometry. This is in agreement with recent arguments based on the fact that this wavefunction is constructed from a non-unitary conformal field theory. By using the cylinder geometry, we discuss in detail the nature of the underlying minimal model and we show the appearance of heterotic conformal towers in the edge energy spectrum where left and right movers are generated by distinct primary operators.

Recent Advances in Shell Evolution with Shell-Model Calculations

Shell evolution in exotic nuclei is investigated with large-scale shell-model calculations. After presenting that the central and tensor forces produce distinctive ways of shell evolution, we show several recent results: (i) evolution of single-particle-like levels in antimony and cupper isotopes, (ii) shape coexistence in nickel isotopes understood in terms of configuration-dependent shell structure, and (iii) prediction of the evolution of the recently established $N=34$ magic number towards smaller proton numbers. In any case, large-scale shell-model calculations play indispensable roles in describing the interplay between single-particle character and correlation.

Toward extremes of angular momentum: Application of the Pfaffian algorithm in realistic calculations

In a calculation of rotated matrix elements with angular momentum projection, the generalized Wick's theorem may encounter a practical problem of combinatorial complexity when the configurations have more than four quasi-particles (qps). The problem can be solved by employing the Pfaffian algorithm generally applicable to calculations of matrix elements for Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov states with any number of qps. This breakthrough in many-body techniques enables studies of high-spin states in a shell-model framework. As the first application of the Pfaffian algorithm, the configuration space of the Projected Shell Model is expanded to include 6-qp states for both positive and negative parities. Taking $^{166}$Hf as an example, we show that 6-qp states become the main configuration of the yrast band beyond spin $I \approx 34\hbar$, which explains the observed third back-bending in moment of inertia. Structures of multi-qp high-$K$ isomers in $^{176}$Hf are analyzed as another example.

Grassmann integral and Balian-Brézin decomposition in Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov matrix elements

We present a new formula to calculate matrix elements of a general unitary operator with respect to Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov states allowing multiple quasi-particle excitations. The Balian-Brézin decomposition of the unitary operator (Il Nuovo Cimento B 64, 37 (1969)) is employed in the derivation. We found that this decomposition is extremely suitable for an application of Fermion coherent state and Grassmann integrals in the quasi-particle basis. The resultant formula is compactly expressed in terms of the Pfaffian, and shows the similar bipartite structure to the formula that we have previously derived in the bare-particles basis (Phys. Lett. B 707, 305 (2012)).

Stochastic extension of the Lanczos method for nuclear shell-model calculations with variational Monte Carlo method

We propose a new variational Monte Carlo (VMC) approach based on the Krylov subspace for large-scale shell-model calculations. A random walker in the VMC is formulated with the $M$-scheme representation, and samples a small number of configurations from a whole Hilbert space stochastically. This VMC framework is demonstrated in the shell-model calculations of $^{48}$Cr and $^{60}$Zn, and we discuss its relation to a small number of Lanczos iterations. By utilizing the wave function obtained by the conventional particle-hole-excitation truncation as an initial state, this VMC approach provides us with a sequence of systematically improved results.

A new formulation to calculate general HFB matrix elements through Pfaffian

A new formula is presented for the calculation of matrix elements between multi-quasiparticle Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) states. The formula is expressed in terms of the Pfaffian, and is derived by using the Fermion coherent states with Grassmann numbers. It turns out that the formula corresponds to an extension of generalized Wick's theorem and simplifies the combinatorial complexity resulting from practical applications of generalized Wick's theorem by unifying the transition density and the transition pairing tensor in the HFB theory. The resultant formula is simpler and more compact than the traditional description of matrix elements of general many-body operators. In addition, through the derivation of our new formula, we found that the Pfaffian version of the Lewis Carroll formula corresponds to the relation conjectrured by Balian and Brezin for the HFB theory in 1969.

New Generation of the Monte Carlo Shell Model for the K Computer Era

We present a newly enhanced version of the Monte Carlo Shell Model method by incorporating the conjugate gradient method and energy-variance extrapolation. This new method enables us to perform large-scale shell-model calculations that the direct diagonalization method cannot reach. This new generation framework of the MCSM provides us with a powerful tool to perform most-advanced large-scale shell-model calculations on current massively parallel computers such as the K computer. We discuss the validity of this method in ab initio calculations of light nuclei, and propose a new method to describe the intrinsic wave function in terms of the shell-model picture. We also apply this new MCSM to the study of neutron-rich Cr and Ni isotopes using the conventional shell-model calculations with an inert 40Ca core and discuss how the magicity of N = 28, 40, 50 remains or is broken.

New variational Monte Carlo method with an energy variance extrapolation for large-scale shell-model calculations

We propose a new variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method with an energy variance extrapolation for large-scale shell-model calculations. This variational Monte Carlo is a stochastic optimization method with a projected correlated condensed pair state as a trial wave function, and is formulated with the M-scheme representation of projection operators, the Pfaffian and the Markov-chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). Using this method, we can stochastically calculate approximated yrast energies and electro-magnetic transition strengths. Furthermore, by combining this VMC method with energy variance extrapolation, we can estimate exact shell-model energies.

Shape transitions in exotic Si and S isotopes and tensor-force-driven Jahn-Teller effect

We show how shape transitions in the neutron-rich exotic Si and S isotopes occur in terms of shell-model calculations with a newly constructed Hamiltonian based on V_MU interaction. We first compare the calculated spectroscopic-strength distributions for the proton 0d_5/2,3/2 and 1s_1/2 orbitals with results extracted from a 48Ca(e,e'p) experiment to show the importance of the tensor-force component of the Hamiltonian. Detailed calculations for the excitation energies, B(E2) and two-neutron separation energies for the Si and S isotopes show excellent agreement with experimental data. The potential energy surface exhibits rapid shape transitions along the isotopic chains towards N=28 that are different for Si and S. We explain the results in terms of an intuitive picture involving a Jahn-Teller-type effect that is sensitive to the tensor-force-driven shell evolution. The closed sub-shell nucleus 42Si is a particularly good example of how the tensor-force-driven Jahn-Teller mechanism leads to a strong oblate rather than spherical shape.

Tensor-force-driven Jahn-Teller effect and shape transitions in exotic Si isotopes

We show how the shape evolution of the neutron-rich exotic Si and S isotopes can be understood as a Jahn-Teller effect that comes in part from the tensor-driven evolution of single-particle energies. The detailed calculations we present are in excellent agreement with known experimental data, and we point out of new features that should be explored in new experiments. Potential energy surfaces are used to understand the shape evolutions. The sub-shell closed nucleus, $^{42}$Si, is shown to be a perfect example of a strongly oblate shape instead of a sphere through a robust Jahn-Teller mechanism. The distribution of spectroscopic factors measured by $^{48}$Ca(e,e'p) experiment is shown to be well described, providing a unique test on the tensor-driven shell evolution.

Variational procedure for nuclear shell-model calculations and energy-variance extrapolation

We discuss a variational calculation for nuclear shell-model calculations and propose a new procedure for the energy-variance extrapolation (EVE) method using a sequence of the approximated wave functions obtained by the variational calculation. The wave functions are described as linear combinations of the parity, angular-momentum projected Slater determinants, the energy of which is minimized by the conjugate gradient method obeying the variational principle. The EVE generally works well using the wave functions, but we found some difficult cases where the EVE gives a poor estimation. We discuss the origin of the poor estimation concerning shape coexistence. We found that the appropriate reordering of the Slater determinants allows us to overcome this difficulty and to reduce the uncertainty of the extrapolation.

Norm-overlap formula of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov states with odd number parity

A formula to calculate a norm overlap between Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) states with the odd number parity (one quasi-particle excited states) is derived with help of the Grassmann numbers and the Fermion coherent states. The final form of the formula is expressed in terms of a product of the Pfaffian for a neighboring even-even system (the zero quasi-particle state), and an extra factor consisting of the Bogoliubov transformation matrix and the anti-symmetric matrix in Thouless' HFB ansatz for the even-even system.

Shell model study for neutron-rich sd-shell nuclei

The microscopic structure of neutron-rich sd-shell nuclei is investigated by using the spherical shell-model in the sd-pf valence space with the extended pairing plus quadrupole-quadrupole forces accompanied by the monopole interaction (EPQQM). The calculation reproduces systematically the known energy levels for even-even and odd-mass nuclei including the recent data for 43S, 46S and 47Ar. In particular, the erosion of the N=28 shell closure in 42Si can be explained. Our EPQQM results are compared with other shell-model calculations with the SDPF-NR and SDPF-U effective interactions.

Filter diagonalization of shell-model calculations

We present a method of filter diagonalization for shell-model calculations. This method is based on the Sakurai and Sugiura (SS) method, but extended with help of the shifted complex orthogonal conjugate gradient (COCG) method. A salient feature of this method is that it can calculate eigenvalues and eigenstates in a given energy interval. We show that this method can be an alternative to the Lanczos method for calculating ground and excited states, as well as spectral strength functions. With an application to the $M$-scheme shell-model calculations we demonstrate that several inherent problems in the widely-used Lanczos method can be removed or reduced.

Novel Extrapolation Method in the Monte Carlo Shell Model

We propose an extrapolation method utilizing energy variance in the Monte Carlo shell model in order to estimate the energy eigenvalue and observables accurately. We derive a formula for the energy variance with deformed Slater determinants, which enables us to calculate the energy variance efficiently. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated for the full $pf$-shell calculation of $^{56}$Ni, and the applicability of the method to a system beyond current limit of exact diagonalization is shown for the $pf$+$g_{9/2}$-shell calculation of $^{64}$Ge.

Anomalous Properties of Quadrupole Collective States in $^{136}$Te and beyond

The ground and low-lying states of neutron-rich exotic Te and Sn isotopes are studied in terms of the nuclear shell model by the same Hamiltonian used for the spherical-deformed shape phase transition of Ba isotopes, without any adjustment. An anomalously small value is obtained for $B(E2;0^+_1\to 2^+_1)$ in $^{136}$Te, consistently with a recent experiment. The levels of $^{136}$Te up to yrast $12^+$ are shown to be in agreement with observed ones. It is pointed out that $^{136}$Te can be an exceptionally suitable case for studying mixed-symmetry 1$^+$, 2$^+$ and 3$^+$ states, and predictions are made for energies, M1 and E2 properties. Systematic trends of structure of heavier and more exotic Sn and Te isotopes beyond $^{136}$Te are studied by Monte Carlo Shell Model, presenting an unusual and very slow evolution of collectivity/deformation.
