BRST Ghost-Vertex Operator in Witten's Cubic Open String Field Theory on Multiple $Dp$-branes

The Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) ghost field is a key element in constructing Witten's cubic open string field theory. However, to date, the ghost sector of the string field theory has not received a great deal of attention. In this study, we address the BRST ghost on multiple $Dp$-branes, which carries non-Abelian indices and couples to a non-Ablelian gauge field. We found that the massless components of the BRST ghost field can play the role of the Faddeev-Popov ghost in the non-Alelian gauge field, such that the string field theory maintains the local non-Abelian gauge invariance.

Cubic Closed String Field Theory on a Double Layer

Various studies have attempted to extend the Witten's cubic open string field theory to the cubic closed string field theory, which may describe Einstein gravity in the low energy sector consistently. In the present study we propose a cubic closed string field theory, introducing a double layer to describe the closed string world-sheet as an extension of the open string world-sheet of the Witten's cubic open string. We mapped the closed string world-sheet onto the complex plane, of which the lower half plane is completely covered by the extended part of the string world-sheet. Using the Green's function on the complex plane, evaluated the Polyakov string path integral, from which we extracted the Neumann functions and the vertex operators. We obtained the one and two string vertices (identities) following this procedure and finally the cubic string vertex operator. It is notable that the obtained cubic string scattering amplitude coincide with the cubic graviton interaction of the Einstein gravity. Thus, the resultant cubic closed string field theory consistently describes the Einstein gravity. We also show that the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations of the first quantized string theory may be manifested in the cubic closed string field theory.

NSR Open Super-string in the proper-time gauge I: Free Field Theory

We study the Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond (NSR) open super-string theory in the proper-time gauge. The string field action is obtained by evaluating the Polyakov string path integral. In this study, we focus on the open-string free-field action, which corresponds to the string path integral on a strip. Depending on the periodicity of the fermion fields, the open super-string has two sectors: The Neveu-Schwarz (NS) and Ramond (R) sectors. We can impose the gauge conditions to fix the (super-) reparametrization invariance on the two-dimensional metric and its super-partner on the string world sheet to secure the covariance, in contrast to the light-cone gauge condition. Accordingly, the proper-time emerges in the NS sector and both proper-time and its super-partner appear in the R-sector. Integration leads to free-string field actions in both sectors.

Witten's Cubic Open String Field Theory on multiple $Dp$-branes

We study Witten's cubic open string field theory on multiple $Dp$-branes. On multiple $Dp$-branes the string fields carry $U(N)$ group indices. Mapping the string world-sheet onto the upper half complex plane and evaluating the Polyakov string path integral of Witten's cubic open string, we obtain a Fock space representation of one, two and three-string vertex operators. In the low energy region, the system is described by massless gauge fields and massless scalar fields, carrying $U(N)$ group indices. The two-string vertex induces mass terms for the gauge fields and the scalar fields. The cubic interaction reduces correctly to the cubic term of the non-Abelian gauge fields, cubic interaction terms of the gauge fields, and the scalar fields on $(p+1)$ dimensional space. Thus, Witten's string field theory may be a useful tool to study the quantum dynamics of open strings on multiple $Dp$-branes.

Canonical Quantization of Massive Symmetric Rank-Two Tensor in String Theory

The canonical quantization of a massive symmetric rank-two tensor in string theory, which contains two Stueckelberg fields, was studied. As a preliminary study, we performed a canonical quantization of the Proca model to describe a massive vector particle that shares common properties with the massive symmetric rank-two tensor model. By performing a canonical analysis of the Lagrangian, which describes the symmetric rank-two tensor, obtained by Siegel and Zwiebach (SZ) from string field theory, we deduced that the Lagrangian possesses only first class constraints that generate local gauge transformation. By explicit calculations, we show that the massive symmetric rank-two tensor theory is gauge invariant only in the critical dimension of open bosonic string theory, i.e., $d=26$. This emphasizes that the origin of local symmetry is the nilpotency of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) operator, which is valid only in the critical dimension. For a particular gauge imposed on the Stueckelberg fields, the gauge-invariant Lagrangian of the SZ model reduces to the Fierz-Pauli Lagrangian of a massive spin-two particle. Thus, the Fierz-Pauli Lagrangian is a gauge-fixed version of the gauge-invariant Lagrangian for a massive symmetric rank-two tensor. By noting that the Fierz-Pauli Lagrangian is not suitable for studying massive spin-two particles with small masses, we propose the transverse-traceless (TT) gauge to quantize the SZ model as an alternative gauge condition. In the TT gauge, the two Stueckelberg fields can be decoupled from the symmetric rank-two tensor and integrated trivially. The massive spin-two particle can be described by the SZ model in the TT gauge, where the propagator of the massive spin-two particle has a well-defined massless limit.

Exact Duality of The Dissipative Hofstadter Model on a Triangular Lattice

We study the dissipative Hofstadter model on a triangular lattice, making use of the $O(2,2;R)$ T-dual transformation of string theory. The $O(2,2;R)$ dual transformation transcribes the model in a commutative basis into the model in a non-commutative basis. In the zero temperature limit, the model exhibits an exact duality, which identifies equivalent points on the two dimensional parameter space of the model. The exact duality also defines magic circles on the parameter space, where the model can be mapped onto the boundary sine-Gordon on a triangular lattice. The model describes the junction of three quantum wires in a uniform magnetic field background. An explicit expression of the equivalence condition, which identifies the points on the two dimensional parameter space of the model by the exact duality, is obtained. It may help us to understand the structure of the phase diagram of the model.

Hetero-Junction of Two Quantum Wires: Critical Line and Duality

Applying the Fermi-Bose equivalence and the boundary state formulation, we study the hetero-junction of two quantum wires. Two quantum wires are described by Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids with different TL parameters and electrons transport between two wires is depicted by a simple hopping interaction. We calculate the radiative corrections to the hopping interaction and obtain the renormalization (RG) exponent, making use of the perturbation theory based on the boundary state formulation. The model exhibits a phase transition at zero temperature. We discuss the critical line which defines the phase boundary on the two dimensional parameter space. The model also exhibits the particle-kink duality, which maps the strong coupling regime of the model onto the weak coupling regime of the dual model. The strong coupling regime of the model is found to match exactly the weak coupling regime of the dual model. This model is also important to study the critical behaviors of the two dimensional dissipative system with anisotropic friction coefficients.

The Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid with Quantum Impurity Revisited: Critical Line and Phase Diagram

We revisit the $(1+1)$ dimensional field theoretical model, which describes the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), interacting with a static impurity at the origin of the half line. Applying the Fermi-Bose equivalence and finite conformal transformations only, we map the model onto the Schmid model. Some details of the bosonization procedure have been given. The critical line and the phase diagram of the model follow from the renormalization group analysis of the Schmid model. The obtained critical line of the model is a hyperbola in the parameter space of the two couplings of the TLL.

$U(1)$ Chiral Symmetry in One-Dimensional Interacting Electron System with Spin

We study a spin dependent Tomonaga-Luttinger model in one dimension, which describes electron transport through a single barrier. Using the Fermi-Bose equivalence in one dimension, we map the model onto a massless Thirring model with a boundary interaction. A field theoretical perturbation theory for the model has been developed and the chiral symmetry is found to play an important role. The classical bulk action possesses a global $U_A(1)^4$ chiral symmetry, since the fermion fields are massless. This global chiral symmetry is broken by the boundary interaction and the bosonic degrees of freedom, corresponding to the chiral phase transformation, become dynamical. They acquire an additional kinetic action from the fermion path integral measure and govern the critical behaviors of physical operators. On the critical line where the boundary interaction becomes marginal, they decouple from the fermi fields. Consequently the action reduces to the free field action, which contains only a fermion bilinear boundary mass term as an interaction term. By a renormalization group analysis, we obtain a new critical line, which differs from the previously known critical lines in the literature. The result of this work implies that the phase diagram of the one dimensional electron system may have a richer structure than previously known.

Canonical Quantization of The Dissipative Hofstadter Model

We perform canonical quantization of the dissipative Hofstadter model, which has a wide range of applications in condensed matter physics and string theory. The target space duality and the non-commutative algebra developed in string theory are discussed for the model. We show that the target space duality transformation of closed string theory, $O(2,2;R)$, removes the interaction with a uniform magnetic field. The $O(2,2;R)$ dual transformation changes the basis of oscillator operators so that the algebra of the string coordinate operators at the boundary become non-commutative. In the zero temperature limit, the non-commutative algebra of open string theory emerges. We also developed the boundary state formulation for the dissipative Hofstadter model.

Chiral Fermion and Boundary State Formulation: Resonant Point-Contact Tunneling

We study a model of resonant point-contact tunneling of a single Luttinger-liquid lead, using the boundary state formulation. The model is described by a single chiral Fermion in one dimensional space with one point contact interaction at the origin. It is the simplest model of this type. By folding the infinite line we map the model onto a non-chiral model on the half infinite line and transcribe the point-contact tunneling interaction into a boundary interaction. The tunneling interaction yields a non-local effective action at the boundary. We explicitly construct the boundary state and evaluate the current correlation functions. The contact interaction is shown to act on the lower frequency modes more strongly.

Klein factors and Fermi-Bose Equivalence

Generalizing the kink operator of the Heisenberg spin 1/2 model, we construct a set of Klein factors explicitly such that $(1+1)$ dimensional fermion theories with arbitrary number of species are mapped onto the corresponding boson theories with the same number of species and vice versa. The actions for the resultant theories do not possess any nontrivial Klein factor. With this set of Klein factors, we are also able to map the simple boundary states such as the Neumann and the Dirichlet boundary states, of the fermion (boson) theory onto those of the boson (fermion) theory. Applications of the Fermi-Bose equivalence with the constructed Klein factors to well-known $(1+1)$ dimensional theories have been discussed.

Multichannel audio signal source separation based on an Interchannel Loudness Vector Sum

In this paper, a Blind Source Separation (BSS) algorithm for multichannel audio contents is proposed. Unlike common BSS algorithms targeting stereo audio contents or microphone array signals, our technique is targeted at multichannel audio such as 5.1 and 7.1ch audio. Since most multichannel audio object sources are panned using the Inter-channel Loudness Difference (ILD), we employ the ILVS (Inter-channel Loudness Vector Sum) concept to cluster common signals (such as background music) from each channel. After separating the common signals from each channel, we employ an Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm with a von-Mises distribution to successfully classify the clustering of sound source objects and separate the audio signals from the original mixture. Our proposed method can therefore separate common audio signals and object source signals from multiple channels with reasonable quality. Our multichannel audio content separation technique can be applied to an upmix system or a cinema audio system requiring multichannel audio source separation.

Quantum Brownian Motion on a Triangular Lattice and Fermi-Bose Equivalence: An Application of Boundary State Formulation

We discuss the Bose-Fermi equivalence in the quantum Brownian motion (QBM) on a triangular lattice, mapping the action for the QBM into a string theory action with a periodic boundary tachyon potential. We construct new Klein factors which are more appropriate than the conventional ones to deal with the quantum field theories defined on a two dimensioanl space-time with boundaries. Using the Fermi-Bose equivalence with the new Klein factors, we show that the model for the quantum Bownian motion on a triangular lattice is equivalent to the Thirring model with boundary terms, which are quadratic in fermion field operators, in the off-critical regions and to a $SU(3)\times SU(3)$ free fermion theory with quadratic boundary terms at the critical point.

Quantum Electron Transport and Duality in a One-Dimensional Interacting System

We study the quantum electron transport in a one-dimensional interacting electron system, called Schmid model, reformulating the model in terms of the bosonic string theory on a disk. The particle-kink duality of the model is discussed in the absence of the external electric field and further extended to the model with a weak electric field. Using the linear response theory, we evaluate the electric conductance both for both weak and strong periodic potentials in the zero temperature limit. The electric conductance is invariant under the particle-kink duality.

Quons in a Quantum Dissipative System

String theory proves to be an imperative tool to explore the critical behavior of the quantum dissipative system. We discuss the quantum particles moving in two dimensions, in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, subject to a periodic potential and a dissipative force, which are described by the dissipative Wannier-Azbel-Hofstadter (DWAH) model. Using string theory formulation of the model, we find that the elementary excitations of the system at the generic points of the off-critical regions, in the zero temperature limit are quons, which satisfy q-deformed statistics.

Dissipative Hofstadter Model at the Magic Points and Critical Boundary Sine-Gordon Model

The dissipative Hofstadter model describes quantum particles moving in two dimensions subject to a uniform magnetic field, a periodic potential and a dissipative force. We discuss the dissipative Hofstadter model in the framework of the boundary state formulation in string theory and construct exact boundary states for the model at the magic points by using the fermion representation. The dissipative Hofstadter model at magic points is shown to be equivalent to the critical boundary sine-Gordon model.

The Final Fate of the Rolling Tachyon

We propose an alternative interpretation of the boundary state for the rolling tachyon, which may depict the time evolution of unstable D-branes in string theory. Splitting the string variable in the temporal direction into the classical part, which we may call "time" and the quantum one, we observe the time dependent behaviour of the boundary. Using the fermion representation of the rolling tachyon boundary state, we show that the boundary state correctly describes the time-dependent decay process of the unstable D-brane into a S-brane at the classical level.

Supersymmetries and Hopf-duality in the Penrose Limit of AdS_3 times S^3 times T^4

We investigate various aspects of the plane wave geometries obtained from D1/D5-brane system. We study the effect of Hopf-duality on the supersymmetries preserved by the Penrose limit of $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ geometry. In type-IIB case, we first show that the Penrose limit makes the size of the `would-be' internal torus comparable to that of the other directions. Based on this observation, we consider, in taking the Penrose limit, the generalization of the null geodesic to incorporate the tilted direction between the equator of $S^3$ and one of the torus directions. For generic values of the tilting angle, supersymmetries are not preserved. When the limit is taken along the torus direction, 16 supersymmetries are preserved. For the ordinary Penrose limit, 16 generic and 8 `supernumerary' supersymmetries are observed. In the Penrose limit of Hopf-dualized type-IIA geometry, only 4 supersymmetries are preserved. We classify all the Killing spinors according to their periodic properties along some relevant coordinates.

Noncommutative Dirac-Born-Infeld Action for D-brane

We derive the noncommutative Dirac-Born-Infeld action for the $D$-brane, which governs dynamics of $D$-brane with a NS-NS $B$-field in the low energy regime. Depending on some details of the path integral prescriptions, both ordinary Dirac-Born-Infeld action and noncommutative one can be obtained by evaluating the same Polyakov string path integral for the open string ending on the $D$-brane. Thus, it establishes the equivalence of the noncommutative Dirac-Born-Infeld action and the ordinary one.

Two Dimensional Anti-de Sitter Space and Discrete Light Cone Quantization

We realize the two dimensional anti-de Sitter ($AdS_2$) space as a Kaluza-Klein reduction of the $AdS_3$ space in the framework of the discrete light cone quantization (DLCQ). Introducing DLCQ coordinates which interpolate the original (unboosted) coordinates and the light cone coordinates, we discuss that $AdS_2/CFT$ correspondence can be deduced from the $AdS_3/CFT$. In particular, we elaborate on the deformation of WZW model to obtain the boundary theory for the $AdS_2$ black hole. This enables us to derive the entropy of the $AdS_2$ black hole from that of the $AdS_3$ black hole.

The BPS Domain Wall Solutions in Self-Dual Chern-Simons-Higgs Systems

We study domain wall solitons in the relativistic self-dual Chern-Simons Higgs systems by the dimensional reduction method to two dimensional spacetime. The Bogomolny bound on the energy is given by two conserved quantities in a similar way that the energy bound for BPS dyons is set in some Yang-Mills-Higgs systems in four dimensions. We find the explicit soliton configurations which saturate the energy bound and their nonrelativistic counter parts. We also discuss the underlying N=2 supersymmetry.
