Nodal set comparison for Allen--Cahn solutions with conical asymptotics

We establish a comparison principle for entire solutions of the Allen--Cahn equation whose nodal sets, possibly singular, are asymptotic to a regular minimizing hypercone. We show that inclusion of the positive phases enforces a global ordering of the solutions. As a consequence, the positive phase uniquely determines the solution, and strict phase inclusion implies that the corresponding nodal sets are disjoint. Our analysis relies on a maximum principle for the linearized operator on unbounded domains that are not necessarily smooth, and yields an Allen--Cahn analogue of the strong maximum principle for minimal hypersurfaces.

Diameter estimate for planar $L_p$ dual Minkowski problem

In this paper, given a prescribed measure on $\mathbb{S}^1$ whose density is bounded and positive, we establish a uniform diameter estimate for solutions to the planar $L_p$ dual Minkowski problem when $0<p<1$ and $q\ge 2$. We also prove the uniqueness and positivity of solutions to the $L_p$ Minkowski problem when the density of the measure is sufficiently close to a constant in $C^α$.

IMEXLBM 1.0: A Proxy Application based on the Lattice Boltzmann Method for solving Computational Fluid Dynamic problems on GPUs

The US Department of Energy launched the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) in 2016 as part of a coordinated effort to achieve the next generation of high-performance computing (HPC) and to accelerate scientific discovery. The Exascale Proxy Applications Project began within the ECP to: (1) improve the quality of proxies created by the ECP (2) provide small, simplified codes which share important features of large applications and (3) capture programming methods and styles that drive requirements for compilers and other elements of the tool chain. This article describes one Proxy Application (or "proxy app") suite called IMEXLBM which is an open-source, self-contained code unit, with minimal dependencies, that is capable of running on heterogeneous platforms like those with graphic processing units (GPU) for accelerating the calculation. In particular, we demonstrate functionality by solving a benchmark problem in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) on the ThetaGPU machine at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF). Our method makes use of a domain-decomposition technique in conjunction with the message-passing interface (MPI) standard for distributed memory systems. The OpenMP application programming interface (API) is employed for shared-memory multi-processing and offloading critical kernels to the device (i.e. GPU). We also verify our effort by comparing data generated via CPU-only calculations with data generated with CPU+GPU calculations. While we demonstrate efficacy for single-phase fluid problems, the code-unit is designed to be versatile and enable new physical models that can capture complex phenomena such as two-phase flow with interface capture.

Optimal configuration and symmetry breaking phenomena in the composite membrane problem with fractional Laplacian

We consider the following eigenvalue optimization in the composite membrane problem with fractional Laplacian: given a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $α>0$ and $0<A<|Ω|$, find a subset $D\subset Ω$ of area $A$ such that the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the operator $(-Δ)^s+αχ_D$ is as small as possible. The solution $D$ is called as an optimal configuration for the data $(Ω,α,A)$. Looking at the well-known extension definition for the fractional Laplacian, in the case $s=1/2$ this is essentially the composite membrane problem for which the mass is concentrated at the boundary as one is trying to maximize the Steklov eigenvalue. We prove existence of solutions and study properties of optimal configuration $D$. This is a free boundary problem which could be formulated as a two-sided unstable obstacle problem. Moreover, we show that for some rotationally symmetric domains (thin annuli), the optimal configuration is not rotational symmetric, which implies the non-uniqueness of the optimal configuration $D$. On the other hand, we prove that for a convex domain $Ω$ having reflection symmetries, the optimal configuration possesses the same symmetries, which implies uniqueness of the optimal configuration $D$ in the ball case.

Dynamics of viscous coalescing droplets in a saturated vapor phase

The dynamics of two liquid droplets coalescing in their saturated vapor phase are investigated by Lattice Boltzmann numerical simulations. Attention is paid to the effect of the vapor phase on the formation and growth dynamics of the liquid bridge in the viscous regime. We observe that the onset of the coalescence occurs earlier and the expansion of the bridge initially proceeds faster when the coalescence takes place in a saturated vapor compared to the coalescence in a non-condensable gas. We argue that the initially faster evolution of the coalescence in the saturated vapor is caused by the vapor transport through condensation during the early stages of the coalescence.
