Neutron spectroscopic study of crystal-field excitations and the effect of the crystal field on dipolar magnetism in Li$R$F$_4$ ($R$ = Gd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb)

We present a systematic study of the crystal field interactions in the Li$R$F$_4$, $R$ = Gd, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb, family of rare-earth magnets. Using detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements we have been able to quantify the transition energies and wavefunctions for each system. This allows us to quantitatively describe the high-temperature susceptibility measurements for the series of materials and make predictions based on a mean-field approach for the low-temperature thermal and quantum phase transitions. We show that coupling between crystal field and phonon states leads to lineshape broadening in LiTmF$_4$ and level splitting in LiYbF$_4$. Furthermore, using high resolution neutron scattering from LiHoF$_4$, we find anomalous broadening of crystal-field excitations which we attribute to magnetoelastic coupling.

Microscopic structure and dynamics of high and low density trans-1,2-dichloroethylene liquids

We present a study of the dynamics and structural changes for trans-1,2-dichloroethylene between high and low density liquids using neutron scattering techniques (diffraction, small angle neutron scattering and time of flight spectroscopy) and molecular dynamics simulations. We show that changes in the short range ordering of molecules goes along with a change of the molecular dynamics: both structure and dynamics of the high density liquid are more cooperative than those of the low density liquid. The microscopic mechanism underlying the cooperative motions in the high density liquid has been found to be related to the backscattering of molecules due to a strong correlation of molecular ordering.

New Understanding of Ultra-Cold Neutron Production in Solid Deuterium

Our recent neutron scattering measurements of phonons and other quasi-particle excitations in solid deuterium (sD$_2$) and the extraction of the density of states for phonons and rotational transitions in sD2 have led us to a new understanding of the production of ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) in sD2. This new picture is somehow different to earlier published results for sD2. The cross section for UCN production in sD2 has been determined by using the density of states G1(E) in combination with the incoherent approximation and by a direct calibration of our measured neutron cross sections with the known cross section of the J=1 -> 0 rotational transition in deuterium. Both methods deliver new data on this cross section and agree quite well with direct measurements of this energy averaged UCN production cross section.
