Deeply virtual Compton scattering cross section at high Bjorken xBx_B

We report high-precision measurements of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) cross section at high values of the Bjorken variable xBx_B. DVCS is sensitive to the Generalized Parton Distributions of the nucleon, which provide a three-dimensional description of its internal constituents. Using the exact analytic expression of the DVCS cross section for all possible polarization states of the initial and final electron and nucleon, and final state photon, we present the first experimental extraction of all four helicity-conserving Compton Form Factors (CFFs) of the nucleon as a function of xBx_B, while systematically including helicity flip amplitudes. In particular, the high accuracy of the present data demonstrates sensitivity to some very poorly known CFFs.

Determination of the argon spectral function from (e,e'p) data

The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has measured the (e,e′p)(e, e'p) cross section in parallel kinematics using a natural argon target. Here, we report the full results of the analysis of the data set corresponding to beam energy 2.222 GeV, and spanning the missing momentum and missing energy range 15≲pm≲30015 \lesssim p_m \lesssim 300 MeV/c and 12≲Em≲8012 \lesssim E_m \lesssim 80 MeV. The reduced cross section, determined as a function of pmp_m and EmE_m with ≈\approx4\% accuracy, has been fitted using the results of Monte Carlo simulations involving a model spectral function and including the effects of final state interactions. The overall agreement between data and simulations turns out to be quite satisfactory (χ2χ^2/n.d.o.f.=1.9). The resulting spectral function will provide valuable new information, needed for the interpretation of neutrino interactions in liquid argon detectors.

The cross-section measurement for the 3H(e,e′K+)nnΛ^3{\textrm H}(e,e'K^+)nnΛ reaction

The small binding energy of the hypertrition leads to predictions of non-existence of bound hypernuclei for isotriplet three-body systems such as nnΛnnΛ. However, invariant mass spectroscopy at GSI has reported events that may be interpreted as the bound nnΛnnΛ state. The nnΛnnΛ state was sought by missing-mass spectroscopy via the (e,e′K+)(e,e'K^+) reaction at Jefferson Lab's experimental Hall A. The present experiment has higher sensitivity to the nnΛnnΛ-state investigation in terms of better precision by a factor of about three. The analysis shown in this article focuses on the derivation of the reaction cross-section for the 3H(γ∗,K+)X^3{\rm{H}}(γ^{*},K^+)\textrm{X} reaction. Events that were detected in an acceptance, where a Monte Carlo simulation could reproduce the data well (∣δp/p∣<4%|δp/p| < 4\%), were analyzed to minimize the systematic uncertainty. No significant structures were observed with the acceptance cuts, and the upper limits of the production cross-section of the nnΛnnΛ state were obtained to be 2121 and 31 nb/sr31~\rm{nb/sr} at the 90%90\% confidence level when theoretical predictions of (−BΛ,Γ)=(0.25,0.8)(-B_Λ, Γ) = (0.25,0.8) and (0.55,4.7)(0.55, 4.7) MeV, respectively, were assumed. The cross-section result provides valuable information for examining the existence of nnΛnnΛ.

Measurement of the Ar(e,e′^\prime p) and Ti(e,e′^\prime p) cross sections in Jefferson Lab Hall A

The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has collected exclusive electron-scattering data (e,e′^\primep) in parallel kinematics using natural argon and natural titanium targets. Here, we report the first results of the analysis of the data set corresponding to beam energy of 2,222 MeV, electron scattering angle 21.5 deg, and proton emission angle -50 deg. The differential cross sections, measured with ∼\sim4% uncertainty, have been studied as a function of missing energy and missing momentum, and compared to the results of Monte Carlo simulations, obtained from a model based on the Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation.

Probing few-body nuclear dynamics via 3H and 3He (e,e'p)pn cross-section measurements

We report the first measurement of the \eep three-body breakup reaction cross sections in helium-3 (3^3He) and tritium (3^3H) at large momentum transfer (⟨Q2⟩≈1.9\langle Q^2 \rangle \approx 1.9 (GeV/c)2^2) and xB>1x_B>1 kinematics, where the cross section should be sensitive to quasielastic (QE) scattering from single nucleons. The data cover missing momenta 40≤pmiss≤50040 \le p_{miss} \le 500 MeV/c that, in the QE limit with no rescattering, equals the initial momentum of the probed nucleon. The measured cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art ab-initio calculations. Overall good agreement, within ±20%\pm20\%, is observed between data and calculations for the full pmissp_{miss} range for 3^3H and for 100≤pmiss≤350100 \le p_{miss} \le 350 MeV/c for 3^3He. Including the effects of rescattering of the outgoing nucleon improves agreement with the data at pmiss>250p_{miss} > 250 MeV/c and suggests contributions from charge-exchange (SCX) rescattering. The isoscalar sum of 3^3He plus 3^3H, which is largely insensitive to SCX, is described by calculations to within the accuracy of the data over the entire pmissp_{miss} range. This validates current models of the ground state of the three-nucleon system up to very high initial nucleon momenta of 500500 MeV/c.

On the redshift distribution and physical properties of ACT-selected DSFGs

We present multi-wavelength detections of nine candidate gravitationally-lensed dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) selected at 218GHz (1.4mm) from the ACT equatorial survey. Among the brightest ACT sources, these represent the subset of the total ACT sample lying in Herschel SPIRE fields, and all nine of the 218GHz detections were found to have bright Herschel counterparts. By fitting their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with a modified blackbody model with power-law temperature distribution, we find the sample has a median redshift of z=4.1−1.0+1.1z=4.1^{+1.1}_{-1.0} (68 per cent confidence interval), as expected for 218GHz selection, and an apparent total infrared luminosity of log⁡10(μLIR/L⊙)=13.86−0.30+0.33\log_{10}(μL_{\rm IR}/{\rm L}_\odot) = 13.86^{+0.33}_{-0.30}, which suggests that they are either strongly lensed sources or unresolved collections of unlensed DSFGs. The effective apparent diameter of the sample is μd=4.2−1.0+1.7\sqrtμd= 4.2^{+1.7}_{-1.0}kpc, further evidence of strong lensing or multiplicity, since the typical diameter of dusty star-forming galaxies is 1.01.0--2.52.5 kpc. We emphasize that the effective apparent diameter derives from SED modelling without the assumption of optically thin dust (as opposed to image morphology). We find that the sources have substantial optical depth (τ=4.2−1.9+3.7τ= 4.2^{+3.7}_{-1.9}) to dust around the peak in the modified blackbody spectrum (λobs≤500λ_{\rm obs} \le 500 μμm), a result that is robust to model choice.
