Initial state QED radiation aspects for future $e^+e^-$ colliders

This white paper concerns theoretical and phenomenological aspects relevant to the physics of future $e^+e^-$ colliders, in particular regarding initial-state QED radiation. The contributions each contain key technical aspects, and are formulated in a pedagogical manner so as to render them accessible also to those who are not directly working on these and immediately-related topics. This should help both experts and non-experts understand the theoretical challenges that we shall face at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. Specifically, this paper contains descriptions of the treatment of initial state radiation from several Monte Carlo collaborations, as well as contributions that explain a number of more theoretical developments with promise of future phenomenological impact.

Opportunities for precision QCD physics in hadronization at Belle II -- a snowmass whitepaper

This document presents a selection of QCD studies accessible to high-precision studies with hadronic final states in $e^+e^-$ collisions at Belle II. The exceptionally clean environment and the state-of-the-art capabilities of the Belle~II detector (including excellent particle identification and improved vertex reconstruction), coupled with an unprecedented data-set size, will make possible to carry out multiple valuable measurements of the strong interaction including hadronic contributions to the muon $(g-2)$ and the QCD coupling, as well as advanced studies of parton hadronization and dynamical quark mass generation.

Spectral functions of the half-filled 1D Hubbard chain within the exchange-correlation potential formalism

The spectral functions of the one-band half-filled 1D Hubbard chain are calculated using the exchange-correlation potential formalism developed recently. The exchange-correlation potential is adopted from the exact potential derived from the Hubbard dimer. Within an approximation in which the full Green function is replaced by a non-interacting one, the spectral functions can be calculated analytically. Despite the simplicity of the approximation, the resulting spectra are in favorable agreement with the more accurate results obtained from the dynamic density-matrix renormalization group method. In particular, the calculated band gap as a function of $U$ is in close agreement with the exact gap obtained from the Bethe ansatz. In addition, the formal general solution to the equation of motion of the Green function is presented and the difference between the traditional self-energy approach and the exchange-correlation potential formalism is also discussed and elaborated. A simplified Holstein Hamiltonian is considered to further illustrate the general form of the exchange-correlation potential.

Challenges for QCD theory - some personal reflections -

At the LHC all processes are QCD ones, whether "signal" or "background". In this review the frontiers of current QCD research are addressed, towards increased understanding, improved calculational precision, and role in potential future discoveries. Issues raised include the limits of perturbative QCD calculations and parton distribution usage, the nature of multiparton interactions, the impact of colour reconnection on physical observables, the need for progress on hadronization modelling, the improvements of parton showers and their combination with the matrix-element description, the use of QCD concepts in Beyond-the-Standard-Model scenarios, and the key position of event generators and other software in the successful exploration of LHC physics. On the way, several questions are posed, where further studies are needed.

Transverse-Momentum-Ordered Showers and Interleaved Multiple Interactions

We propose a sophisticated framework for high-energy hadronic collisions, wherein different QCD physics processes are interleaved in a common sequence of falling transverse-momentum values. Thereby phase-space competition is introduced between multiple parton-parton interactions and initial-state radiation. As a first step we develop new transverse-momentum-ordered showers for initial- and final-state radiation, which should be of use also beyond the scope of the current article. These showers are then applied in the context of multiple interactions, and a few tests of the new model are presented. The article concludes with an outlook on further aspects, such as the possibility of a shower branching giving partons participating in two different interactions.

QCD Radiation off Heavy Particles

We study QCD radiation in decay processes involving heavy particles. As input, the first-order gluon emission rate is calculated in a number of reactions, and comparisons of the energy flow patterns show a non-negligible process dependence. To proceed further, the QCD parton shower language offers a convenient approach to include multi-gluon emission effects, and to describe exclusive event properties. An existing shower algorithm is extended to take into account the process-dependent mass, spin and parity effects, as given by the matrix element calculations. This allows an improved description of multiple gluon emission effects off b and t quarks, and also off nonstandard particles like squarks and gluinos. Phenomenological applications are presented for bottom production at LEP, Higgs particle decay to heavy flavours, top production and decay at linear colliders, and some simple supersymmetric processes.

A matching of matrix elements and parton showers

We propose a simple scheme to start a parton-shower evolution description from a given jet configuration in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation events. This allows a convenient combination of the full angular information content of matrix elements with the detailed sub-jet structure of parton showers, and should give a realistic overall description of event properties. Explicit studies with this hybrid approach are presented for the four-jet case, as a simple testing ground of the ideas.
