Search for the rare decay K+→μ+ννˉνK^+\toμ^+ν\barνν

Evidence of the K+→μ+ννˉνK^+\toμ^+ν\barνν decay was searched for using E949 experimental data with an exposure of 1.70×10121.70\times 10^{12} stopped kaons. The data sample is dominated by the backgrond process K+→μ+νμγK^+\toμ^+ν_μγ. An upper limit on the decay rate Γ(K+→μ+ννˉν)<2.4×10−6Γ(K+→all)Γ(K^+\toμ^+ν\barνν)< 2.4\times 10^{-6}Γ(K^+\to all) at 90% confidence level was set assuming the Standard Model muon spectrum. The data are presented in such a way as to allow calculation of rates for any assumed μ+μ^+ spectrum.

Photon-Veto Counters at the Outer Edge of the Endcap Calorimeter for the KOTO Experiment

The Outer-Edge Veto (OEV) counter subsystem for extra-photon detection from the backgrounds for the? KL0→π0ννˉK^0_L\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν decay is located at the outer edge of the endcap CsI calorimeter of the KOTO experiment at J-PARC. The subsystem is composed of 44 counters with different cross-sectional shapes. All counters are made of lead and scintillator plates and read out through wavelength-shifting fibers. In this paper, we discuss the design and performances of the OEV counters under heavy load (∼8\sim8 tons/m2^2) in vacuum. For 1-MeV energy deposit, the average light yield and time resolution are 20.9 photo-electrons and 1.5 ns, respectively. Although no pronounced peak by minimum-ionizing particles is observed in the energy distributions, an energy calibration method with cosmic rays works well in monitoring the gain stability with an accuracy of a few percent.

Search for heavy neutrinos in K+→μ+νHK^+\toμ^+ν_H decays

Evidence of a heavy neutrino, νHν_H, in the K+→μ+νHK^+\toμ^+ν_H decays was sought using the E949 experimental data with an exposure of 1.70×10121.70\times 10^{12} stopped kaons. With the major background from the radiative K+→μ+νμγK^+\toμ^+ν_μγ decay understood and suppressed, upper limits (90% C.L.) on the neutrino mixing matrix element between muon and heavy neutrino, ∣UμH∣2|U_{μH}|^2, were set at the level of 10−710^{-7} to 10−910^{-9} for the heavy neutrino mass region 175 to 300 MeV/c2c^2.

Effects of radiation damage caused by proton irradiation on Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs)

We have investigated the effects caused by proton-induced radiation damage on Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC), a pixelized photon detector developed by Hamamatsu Photonics. The leakage current of irradiated MPPC samples linearly increases with total irradiated doses due to radiation damage, which is not completely recovered even after a year from the irradiation. No significant change has been observed in the gains at least up to 8.0 Gy (9.1×1079.1\times10^7 n/mm2^2 in 1 MeV neutron equivalent fluence, ΦeqΦ_{\rm eq}). The device has completely lost its photon-counting capability due to baseline fluctuations and noise pile-up after 21 Gy irradiation (2.4×1082.4\times10^8 n/mm2^2 in ΦeqΦ_{\rm eq}), which might be problematic for some applications, such as ring-imaging Cherenkov detectors. We have found that the pulse-height resolution has been slightly deteriorated after 42 Gy irradiation (4.8×1084.8\times10^8 n/mm2^2 in ΦeqΦ_{\rm eq}), where the measured sample has been illuminated with a few hundred photons. This effect should be considered in the case of energy-measurement applications.

Study of the K0(L) --> pi0 pi0 nu nu-bar decay

The rare decay K0(L) --> pi0 pi0 nu nu-bar was studied with the E391a detector at the KEK 12-GeV proton synchrotron. Based on 9.4 x 10^9 K0L decays, an upper limit of 8.1 x 10^{-7} was obtained for the branching fraction at 90% confidence level. We also set a limit on the K0(L) --> pi0 pi0 X (X --> invisible particles) process; the limit on the branching fraction varied from 7.0 x 10^{-7} to 4.0 x 10^{-5} for the mass of X ranging from 50 MeV/c^2 to 200 MeV/c^2.

Search for a light pseudoscalar particle in the decay KL0→π0π0XK^0_L \to π^0 π^0 X

We performed a search for a light pseudoscalar particle XX in the decay KL0−>pi0pi0XK_L^0->pi0pi0X, X−>γγX->γγ with the E391a detector at KEK. Such a particle with a mass of 214.3 MeV/c2c^2 was suggested by the HyperCP experiment. We found no evidence for XX and set an upper limit on the product branching ratio for KL0−>pi0pi0XK_L^0->pi0pi0X, X−>γγX->γγ of 2.4×10−72.4 \times 10^{-7} at the 90% confidence level. Upper limits on the branching ratios in the mass region of XX from 194.3 to 219.3 MeV/c2c^2 are also presented.
