Models of $J/Ψ$ photo-production reactions on the nucleon

The $J/Ψ$ photo-production reactions on the nucleon can provide information on the roles of gluons in determining the $J/Ψ$-nucleon ($J/Ψ$-N) interactions and the structure of the nucleon. The information on the $J/Ψ$-N interactions is needed to test lattice QCD (LQCD) calculations and to understand the nucleon resonances such as $N^*(P_c)$ recently reported by the LHCb Collaboration. In addition, it is also needed to investigate the production of nuclei with hidden charms and to extract the gluon distributions in nuclei. The main purpose of this article is to review six reaction models of $γ+ p \rightarrow J/Ψ+p$ reactions which have been and can be applied to analyze the data from Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The formulae for each model are given and used to obtain the results to show the extent to which the available data can be described. The models presented include the Pomeron-exchange model of Donnachie and Landshoff (Pom-DL) and its extensions to include $J/Ψ$-N potentials extracted from LQCD (Pom-pot) and to also use the constituent quark model (CQM) to account for the quark substructure of $J/Ψ$ (Pom-CQM). The other three models are developed from applying the perturbative QCD approach to calculate the two-gluon exchange using the generalized parton distribution (GPD) of the nucleon (GPD-based), two- and three-gluon exchanges using the parton distribution of the nucleon ($2g+3g$), and the exchanges of scalar ($0^{++}$) and tensor ($2^{++}$) glueballs within the holographic formulation (holog). The results of investigating the excitation of the nucleon resonances $N^*(P_c)$ in the $γ+ p \rightarrow J/Ψ+p$ reactions are also given.

Pomeron-LQCD model of $J/Ψ$ photo-production on the nucleon

Based on the vector meson dominance assumption, a Hamiltonian model has been developed to investigate $J/Ψ$ photo-production reaction on the nucleon by using the $J/Ψ$-nucleon potential extracted from a lattice QCD calculation of Phys. Rev. D{\bf 82}, 091501 (2010). It is found that the predicted total cross sections are comparable to the recent data of $J/Ψ$ photo-production reaction from Jefferson Laboratory. The model is then extended to include the two-gluon exchange amplitude modeled by Donnachie and Lanshoff within Regge Phenomenology. The resulting Pomeron-LQCD model can then explain the data up to invariant mass $W=$ 300 GeV. Future improvements needed to reduce the uncertainties of the predictions are discussed. The need of an accurate extraction of $J/Ψ$-N potential at short distances from LQCD is illustrated.

From Extraction of Nucleon Resonances to LQCD

The intrinsic difficulties in extracting the hadron resonances from reaction data are illustrated by using several exactly soluble $ππ$ scattering models. The finite-volume Hamiltonian method is applied to predict spectra using two meson-exchange Hamiltonians of $πN$ reactions. Within a three-channel model with $πN$, $πΔ$ and $σN$ channels, we show the advantage of the finite-volume Hamiltonian method over the approach using the Lüscher formula to test Lattice QCD calculations aimed at predicting nucleon resonances. We discuss the necessary steps for using the ANL-Osaka eight-channel Hamiltonian to predict the spectra for testing the LQCD calculations for determining the excited nucleon states up to invariant mass $W= 2 $ GeV.

Isospin decomposition of $γN \to N^*$ transitions within a dynamical coupled-channels model

By extending the dynamical coupled-channels analysis performed in our previous work [Phys. Rev. C 88, 035209 (2013)] to include the available data of photoproduction of pi meson off the neutron, the transition amplitudes for the photo-excitation of the neutron to nucleon resonances, gamma n --> N*, at the resonance pole positions are determined. The combined fits to the data for both the proton- and neutron-target reactions also revise our results for the resonance pole positions and the gamma p --> N* transition amplitudes. Our results allow an isospin decomposition of the gamma N --> N* transition amplitudes for the isospin I=1/2 N* resonances, which is necessary for testing hadron structure models and gives crucial inputs for constructing models of neutrino-induced reactions in the nucleon resonance region.

Isospin decomposition of the $γ^{(*)} N \to N^*$ transitions as input for constructing models of neutrino-induced reactions in the nucleon resonance region

We present our recent efforts to determine the matrix elements associated with the transition between the nucleon and a nucleon resonance induced by the vector current, which are necessary ingredients for models of neutrino-induced reactions in the resonance region. This is accomplished by making the comprehensive analysis of the data for various meson photo- and electro-production reactions off the nucleon within a sophisticated coupled-channels framework, which is known as the ANL-Osaka dynamical coupled-channels model. We also give a brief introduction to our project for constructing a unified neutrino reaction model conducted at the J-PARC Branch of the KEK Theory Center.

Toward establishing low-lying $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperon resonances with the $\bar K + d \to π+ Y + N$ reaction

A model for the $\bar K d \to πY N$ reactions with $Y=Λ, Σ$ is developed, aiming at establishing the low-lying $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperon resonances through analyzing the forthcoming data from the J-PARC E31 experiment. The off-shell amplitudes generated from the dynamical coupled-channels (DCC) model, which was developed in Kamano et al. [Phys. Rev. C 90, 065204 (2014)], are used as input to the calculations of the elementary $\bar K N \to \bar K N$ and $\bar K N \to πY$ subprocesses in the $\bar K d \to πY N$ reactions. It is shown that the cross sections for the J-PARC E31 experiment with a rather high incoming-$\bar{K}$ momentum, $|\vec p_{\bar K}|= 1$ GeV, can be predicted reliably only when the input $\bar K N \to \bar K N$ amplitudes are generated from a $\bar KN$ model, such as the DCC model used in this investigation, which describes the data of the $\bar K N$ reactions at energies far beyond the $\bar K N$ threshold. We find that the data of the threefold differential cross section $dσ/(dM_{πΣ}dΩ_{p_n})$ for the $K^- d \to πΣn$ reaction below the $\bar K N$ threshold can be used to test the predictions of the resonance poles associated with $Λ(1405)$. We also find that the momentum dependence of the threefold differential cross sections for the $K^- d \to π^- Λp$ reaction can be used to examine the existence of a low-lying $J^P=1/2^+$ $Σ$ resonance with a pole mass $M_R = 1457 -i39$ MeV, which was found from analyzing the $K^-p$ reaction data within the employed DCC model.

Dynamical coupled-channels model of $K^- p$ reactions (II): Extraction of $Λ^*$ and $Σ^*$ hyperon resonances

Resonance parameters (pole masses and residues) associated with the excited states of hyperons, Lambda^* and Sigma^*, are extracted within a dynamical coupled-channels model developed recently by us [Phys. Rev. C 90, 065204 (2014)] through a comprehensive partial-wave analysis of the K^- p --> barK N, pi Sigma, pi Lambda, eta Lambda, K Xi data up to invariant mass W = 2.1 GeV. We confirm the existence of resonances corresponding to most, if not all, of the four-star resonances rated by the Particle Data Group. We also find several new resonances, and in particular propose a possible existence of a new narrow J^P=3/2^+ Lambda resonance that couples strongly to the eta Lambda channel. The J^P=1/2^- Lambda resonances located below the barK N threshold are also discussed. Comparing our extracted pole masses with the ones from a recent analysis by the Kent State University group, some significant differences in the extracted resonance parameters are found, suggesting the need of more extensive and accurate data of K^- p reactions including polarization observables to eliminate such an analysis dependence of the resonance parameters. In addition, the determined large branching ratios of the decays of high-mass resonances to the pi Sigma^* and barK^* N channels also suggest the importance of the data of 2 --> 3 reactions such as K^- p --> pi pi Lambda and K^- p --> pi barK N. Experiments on measuring cross sections and polarization observables of these fundamental reactions are highly desirable at hadron beam facilities such as J-PARC for establishing the Lambda^* and Sigma^* spectrum.

Incoherent Pion Production in Neutrino - Deuteron Reactions

Within the multiple scattering formulation, the incoherent pion production in neutrino-deuteron reactions at energies near the $Δ(1232)$ resonance is investigated. The calculations include an impulse term and one-loop contributions from nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) and pion-nucleon ($πN$) final state interactions. The input amplitudes of $πN$ scattering and electroweak pion production reaction on nucleon are generated from a dynamical model which describes very extensive data of $πN$ scattering and both the electromagnetic and the weak pion production reactions on the nucleon. The $NN$ scattering amplitudes are generated from the Bonn potential. The validity of the calculational procedures is established by giving a reasonably good description of the data of pion photo-production on the deuteron. The constructed model is then applied to predict the cross sections of $ν+ d \rightarrow μ^- + π^+ + n+ p$ and $ν+d \rightarrow μ^-+π^0+p+p$ reactions. The importance of including the $NN$ final state interactions to understand the experimental data of these neutrino-deuteron reactions is demonstrated. Our results strongly suggest that the spectator approximation used in the previous analyses to extract the pion production cross sections on the nucleon from the data on the deuteron is not valid for the $ν+ d \rightarrow μ^-+ π^+ +n+p$, but is a good approximation for $ν+ d \rightarrow μ^-+ π^0 + p+p$.

Dynamical coupled-channels model of $K^- p$ reactions (I): Determination of partial-wave amplitudes

We develop a dynamical coupled-channels model of K^- p reactions, aiming at extracting the parameters associated with hyperon resonances and providing the elementary antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes that can be used for investigating various phenomena in the strangeness sector such as the production of hypernuclei from kaon-nucleus reactions. The model consists of (a) meson-baryon (MB) potentials v_{M'B',MB} derived from the phenomenological SU(3) Lagrangian, and (b) vertex interactions Gamma_{MB,Y*} for describing the decays of the bare excited hyperon states (Y*) into MB states. The model is defined in a channel space spanned by the two-body barK N, pi Sigma, pi Lambda, eta Lambda, and K Xi states and also the three-body pi pi Lambda and pi barK N states that have the resonant pi Sigma* and barK* N components, respectively. The resulting coupled-channels scattering equations satisfy the multichannel unitarity conditions and account for the dynamical effects arising from the off-shell rescattering processes. The model parameters are determined by fitting the available data of the unpolarized and polarized observables of the K^- p --> barK N, pi Sigma, pi Lambda, eta Lambda, K Xi reactions in the energy region from the threshold to invariant mass W=2.1 GeV. Two models with equally good chi^2 fits to the data have been constructed. The partial-wave amplitudes obtained from the constructed models are compared with the results from a recent partial-wave analysis by the Kent State University group. We discuss the differences between these three analysis results. Our results at energies near the threshold suggest that the higher partial waves should be treated on the same footing as the S wave if one wants to understand the nature of Lambda(1405)1/2^- using the data below the barK N threshold, as will be provided by the J-PARC E31 experiment.

Finite-volume Hamiltonian method for coupled channel interactions in lattice QCD

Within a multi-channel formulation of $ππ$ scattering, we investigate the use of the finite-volume Hamiltonian approach to resolve scattering observables from lattice QCD spectra. The asymptotic matching of the well-known Lüscher formalism encodes a unique finite-volume spectrum. Nevertheless, in many practical situations, such as coupled-channel systems, it is advantageous to interpolate isolated lattice spectra in order to extract physical scattering parameters. Here we study the use of the Hamiltonian framework as a parameterisation that can be fit directly to lattice spectra. We find that with a modest amount of lattice data, the scattering parameters can be reproduced rather well, with only a minor degree of model dependence.

Neutrino-induced meson productions off nucleon at forward limit in nucleon resonance region

We study forward neutrino-induced meson production off the nucleon in the resonance region. Our calculation is based on a dynamical coupled-channels (DCC) model that reasonably describes pi (gamma) N -> pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma data in the resonance region. We apply the PCAC hypothesis to the DCC model to relate the pi N reaction amplitude to the forward neutrino reaction amplitude. In this way, we give a prediction for nu N -> pi N, pi pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma reaction cross sections. The predicted nu N -> pi pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma cross sections are, for the first time, based on a model extensively tested by data. We compare our results with those from the Rein-Sehgal model that has been very often used in the existing Monte Carlo simulators for neutrino experiments. We find a significant difference between them.

Nucleon resonances within a dynamical coupled-channels model of pi N and gamma N reactions

The nucleon resonances are investigated within a dynamical coupled-channels model of pi N and gamma N reactions up to the invariant mass W = 2 GeV. The meson-baryon (MB) channels included in the calculations are MB = pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma, and pi pi N that has pi Delta, rho N, and sigma N resonant components. The meson-baryon amplitudes T_{M'B',MB}(W) are calculated from solving a set of coupled-channels integral equations defined by an interaction Hamiltonian consisting of (a) meson-exchange interactions v_{M'B',MB} derived from phenomenological Lagrangian, and (b) vertex interactions N* --> MB for describing the transition of a bare excited nucleon state N* to a channel MB. The parameters of v_{M'B',MB} are mainly constrained by the fit to the data of pi N --> pi N in the low energy region up to W =1.4 GeV. The bare masses of N* and the N* --> MB parameters are then determined in simultaneous fits to the data of pi N --> pi N up to W =2.3 GeV and those of pi N --> eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma and gamma N --> pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma up to W = 2.1 GeV. The pole positions and residues of nucleon resonances are extracted by analytically continuing the meson-baryon amplitudes T_{M'B',MB}(W) to the complex Riemann energy surface. From the extracted residues, we have determined the N* --> pi N, gamma N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma transition amplitudes at resonance poles. We compare the resonance pole positions from our analysis with those given by Particle Data Group and the recent coupled-channels analyses by the Juelich and Bonn-Gatchina groups. Four results agree well only for the first N* in each spin-parity-isospin (J^P,I) channel. For higher mass states, the number of states and their resonance positions from four results do not agree well. We discuss the possible sources of the discrepancies and the need of additional data from new hadron facilities such as J-PARC.

Production of $J/Ψ$ on the nucleon and deuteron targets

A coupled-channel model with $πN$, $ρN$ and $J/ΨN$ channels is developed to predict the $π+ N \rightarrow J/Ψ+ N $ cross sections. The $J/Ψ$-$N$ interaction is parameterized in a form related to what has been predicted by the effective field theory approach and Lattice QCD. The other interactions within the model are constrained by the decay width of $J/Ψ\rightarrow ρ+ π$ and the total cross section data of $πN$ reactions. The calculated meson-baryon amplitudes are then used to predict the cross sections of the $J/Ψ$ production on the deuteron target by including the contributions from the impulse term and the one-loop calculations of the final $NN$ and $J/ΨN$ re-scattering effects. Predictions of the dependence of the cross sections of $π^- + p \rightarrow J/Ψ+ n$, $γ+ d \rightarrow J/Ψ+ n + p$, and $π^+ d \rightarrow J/Ψ+p +p$ on the $J/Ψ$-$N$ potentials are presented for experimental determinations of the $J/Ψ$-$N$ interaction. Within the vector meson dominance model, we have also applied the constructed coupled-channel model to predict the $γ+ p\rightarrow J/Ψ+ p$ cross sections near the $J/Ψ$ production threshold.

Recent results on N* spectroscopy with ANL-Osaka dynamical coupled-channels approach

We report our recent effort on the extraction of N*- and Delta*-resonance parameters (pole masses, coupling constants, etc.) through the comprehensive analysis of pion- and photon-induced pi N, eta N, K Lambda, and K Sigma production reactions. The analysis was performed with the ANL-Osaka dynamical coupled-channels approach, which satisfies the multichannel unitarity of the S-matrix in the channel space spanned by pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma, and also three-body pi pi N that contains rho N, pi Delta, and sigma N resonant components. Ongoing projects and future plans are also discussed.

Extraction of Meson Resonances from Three-pions Photo-production Reactions

We have investigated the model dependence of meson resonance properties extracted from the Dalitz-plot analysis of the three-pions photoproduction reactions on the nucleon. Within a unitary model developed in Phys. Rev. D 84, 114019 (2011), we generate Dalitz-plot distributions as data to perform an isobar model fit that is similar to most of the previous analyses of three-pion production reactions. It is found that the resonance positions from the two models agree well when both fit the data accurately, except for the resonance poles near branch points. The residues of the resonant amplitudes extracted from the two models and by the usual Breit-Wigner procedure agree well only for the isolated resonances with narrow widths. For overlapping resonances, most of the extracted residues could be drastically different. Our results suggest that even with high precision data, the resonance extraction should be based on models within which the amplitude parametrization is constrained by three-particle unitarity condition.

Neutrino-induced forward meson-production reactions in nucleon resonance region

As a first step toward developing a reaction model that enables a comprehensive description of neutrino-nucleon reactions in the nucleon resonance region, we have applied for the first time a dynamical coupled-channels model, which successfully describes πN, γN --> πN, ηN, ππN, KΛ, KΣreactions up to W = 2 GeV, to predict the neutrino-induced meson-production reactions with ΔS = 0 at the forward angle limit. This has been achieved by relating the divergence of the axial-current matrix elements at Q^2 = 0 to the πN --> X reaction amplitudes through the PCAC hypothesis. We present the contributions from each of the πN, ηN, ππN, KΛ, KΣchannels to the F_2 structure function at Q^2 --> 0 limit up to W = 2 GeV.

Nucleon Resonances with Hidden Charm in Coupled-Channel Models

The model dependence of the predictions of nucleon resonances with hidden charm is investigated. We consider several coupled-channel models which are derived from relativistic quantum field theory by using (1) a unitary transformation method, and (2) the three-dimensional reductions of Bethe-Salpeter Equation. With the same vector meson exchange mechanism, we find that all models give very narrow molecular-like nucleon resonances with hidden charm in the mass range of 4.3 GeV $ < M_R < $ 4.5 GeV, in consistent with the previous predictions.

Photo-production of Bound States with Hidden Charms

The photo-production of $J/Ψ$-$^3He$ bound state ($[^3He]_{J/Ψ}$) on a $^4He$ target has been investigated using the impulse approximation. The calculations have been performed using several $γ+N \rightarrow J/Ψ+N$ models based on the Pomeron-exchange and accounting for the pion-exchange mechanism at low energies. The $J/Ψ$ wavefunctions in $[^3He]_{J/Ψ}$ are generated from various $J/Ψ$-nucleus potentials which are constructed by either using a procedure based on the Pomeron-quark coupling mechanism or folding a $J/Ψ$-N potential ($v_{J/Ψ,N}$) into the nuclear densities. We consider $v_{J/Ψ,N}$ derived from the effective field theory approach, Lattice QCD, and Pomeron-quark coupling mechanism. The upper bound of the predicted total cross sections is about $0.1 - 0.3$ pico-barn. We also consider the possibility of photo-production of a six quark-$J/Ψ$ bound state ($[q^6]_{J/Ψ})$ on the $^3He$ target. The Compound Bag Model of $NN$ scattering and the quark cluster model of nuclei are used to estimate the $[q^6]$-N wavefunction in $^3He$ by imposing the condition that the calculated $^3He$ charge form factor must be consistent with what is predicted by the conventional nuclear model. The upper bound of the predicted total cross sections of $γ+ ^3He \rightarrow [q^6]_{J/Ψ} +N$ is about 2 - 4 pico-barn, depending on the model of $γ+N \rightarrow J/Ψ+N$ used in the calculations. Our results call for the need of precise measurements of $γ+p \rightarrow J/Ψ+p$ and also the $γ+^2H\rightarrow J/Ψ+n + p $ reactions near the threshold.

Pion-Exchange and Fermi-Motion Effects on the Proton-Deuteron Drell-Yan Process

Within a nuclear model that the deuteron has NN and πNN components, we derive convolution formula for investigating the Drell-Yan process in proton-deuteron (pd) reactions. The contribution from the πNN component is expressed in terms of a pion momentum distribution that depends sensitively on the πNN form factor. With a πNN form factor determined by fitting the πN scattering data up to invariant mass W = 1.3 GeV, we find that the pion-exchange and nucleon Fermi-motion effects can change significantly the ratios between the proton-deuteron and proton-proton Drell-Yan cross sections, R_{pd/pp} = σ^{pd}/(2σ^{pp}), in the region where the partons emitted from the target deuteron are in the Bjorken x_2 > 0.4 region. The calculated ratios R_{pd/pp} at 800 GeV agree with the available data. Predictions at 120 GeV for analyzing the forthcoming data from Fermilab are presented.

Determining pseudoscalar meson photo-production amplitudes from complete experiments

We review the development of the most general analytic form of the cross section, dependent upon the three polarization vectors of the beam, target and recoil baryon, including all single, double and triple-polarization terms involving 16 spin-dependent observables. We examine the different conventions that have been used by different authors, and we present expressions that allow the direct numerical calculation of any pseudoscalar meson photo-production observables with arbitrary spin projections from the Chew-Goldberger-Low-Nambu amplitudes. We use this numerical tool to clarify apparent sign differences that exist in the literature. We also present analytic expressions that determine the recoil baryon polarization, together with examples of their potential use with quasi-4pi detectors to deduce observables. As an illustration of the use of the consistent machinery presented in this review, we carry out a multipole analysis of the gamma p -> K^+ Lambda reaction and examine the impact of recently published polarization measurements. In fitting multipoles, we use a combined Monte Carlo sampling of the amplitude space, with gradient minimization, and find a shallow chi^2 valley pitted with a very large number of local minima. This results in broad bands of multipole solutions that are experimentally indistinguishable. While these bands have been noticeably narrowed by the inclusion of new polarization measurements, many of the multipoles remain very poorly determined, even in sign, despite the inclusion of data on 8 different observables. We have compared multipoles from recent PWA codes with our model-independent solution bands. The potential accuracy of amplitudes that could be extracted from measurements of all 16 polarization observables has been studied with mock data using the statistical variations that are expected from ongoing experiments.

On the Determination of \bar{d}/\bar{u} Ratios from Proton-Proton and Proton-Deuteron Drell-Yan Processes

By using the convolution formula derived within the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics, we have examined the Fermi Motion effects on the ratios R_{pd/pp}= sigma^{pd}/(2 sigma^{pp}) between the proton-proton (p-p) and proton-deuteron (p-d) Drell-Yan cross sections. We have found that in the small x_2 < 0.3 region, the Fermi Motion effect is less than 1% and our results for the ratios R_{pd/pp} = sigma^{pd}/(2 sigma^{pp}) agree well with the data at 800 GeV. In the large Bjorken x_2 > about 0.4 region, the p-d Drell-Yan cross sections can be influenced strongly by the Fermi motion effect. At 120 GeV the predicted Fermi Motion effect can enhance the ratios R_{pd/pp} by about 20% at x_2 \sim 0.6 and about a factor of 2.5 at x_2 -> 1.0. Our results suggest that the Fermi motion effect, along with other possible nuclear effects, must be included, in extracting the \bar{d}/\bar{u} ratios in the proton from the experiments on p-p and p-d Drell-Yan processes at large x_2.

Unitary coupled-channels model for three-mesons decays of heavy mesons

A unitary coupled-channels model is presented for investigating the decays of heavy mesons and excited meson states into three light pseudoscalar mesons. The model accounts for the three-mesons final state interactions in the decay processes, as required by both the three-body and two-body unitarity conditions. In the absence of the Z-diagram mechanisms that are necessary consequences of the three-body unitarity, our decay amplitudes are reduced to a form similar to those used in the so-called isobar-model analysis. We apply our coupled-channels model to the three-pions decays of a1(1260), pi2(1670), pi2(2100), and D0 mesons, and show that the Z-diagram mechanisms can contribute to the calculated Dalitz plot distributions by as much as 30% in magnitudes in the regions where f0(600), rho(770), and f2(1270) dominate the distributions. Also, by fitting to the same Dalitz plot distributions, we demonstrate that the decay amplitudes obtained with the unitary model and the isobar model can be rather different, particularly in the phase that plays a crucial role in extracting the CKM CP-violating phase from the data of B meson decays. Our results indicate that the commonly used isobar model analysis must be extended to account for the final state interactions required by the three-body unitarity to reanalyze the three-mesons decays of heavy mesons, thereby exploring hybrid or exotic mesons, and signatures of physics beyond the standard model.

Calculations of Polarization Observables in Pseudoscalar Meson Photo-production Reactions

In preparation for the extraction of pseudoscalar meson photo-production amplitudes from a new generation of complete experiments, we assemble the relations between experimental observables and the Chew-Goldberger-Low-Nambu amplitudes. We present expressions that allow the direct calculation of matrix elements with arbitrary spin projections and uses these to clarify sign differences that exist in the literature. Disentangling the dynamical origin of P11 Nucleon Resonances

We show that two almost degenerate poles near the $πΔ$ threshold and the next higher mass pole in the $P_{11}$ partial wave of $πN$ scattering evolve from a single bare state through its coupling with $πN$, $ηN$ and $ππN$ reaction channels. This finding provides new information on understanding the dynamical origins of the Roper $N^*(1440)$ and $N^*(1710)$ resonances listed by Particle Data Group. Extraction of Electromagnetic Transition Form Factors for Nucleon Resonances within a Dynamical Coupled-Channels Model

We explain the application of a recently developed analytic continuation method to extract the electromagnetic transition form factors for the nucleon resonances ($N^*$) within a dynamical coupled-channel model of meson-baryon reactions.Illustrative results of the obtained $N^*\rightarrow γN$ transition form factors, defined at the resonance pole positions on the complex energy plane, for the well isolated $P_{33}$ and $D_{13}$, and the complicated $P_{11}$ resonances are presented. A formula has been developed to give an unified representation of the effects due to the first two $P_{11}$ poles, which are near the $πΔ$ threshold, but are on different Riemann sheets. We also find that a simple formula, with its parameters determined in the Laurent expansions of $πN \rightarrow πN$ and $γN \rightarrowπN$ amplitudes, can reproduce to a very large extent the exact solutions of the considered model at energies near the real parts of the extracted resonance positions. We indicate the differences between our results and those extracted from the approaches using the Breit-Wigner parametrization of resonant amplitudes to fit the data.

Extraction of P11 Resonance from pi-N Data and Its Stability

An important question about resonance extraction is how much resonance poles and residues extracted from data depend on a model used for the extraction, and on the precision of data. We address this question with the dynamical coupled-channel (DCC) model developed in Excited Baryon Analysis Center (EBAC) at JLab. We focus on the P11 pi-N scattering. We examine the model-dependence of the poles by varying parameters to a large extent within the EBAC-DCC model. We find that two poles associated with the Roper resonance are fairly stable against the variation. We also develop a model with a bare nucleon, thereby examining the stability of the Roper poles against different analytic structure of the P11 amplitude below pi-N threshold. We again find a good stability of the Roper poles.

Extraction of P11 resonances from pi N data

We show that two P11 nucleon resonance poles near the pi Delta threshold, obtained in several analyses, are stable against large variations of parameters within a dynamical coupled-channels analysis based on meson-exchange mechanisms. By also performing an analysis based on a model with a bare nucleon state, we find that this two-pole structure is insensitive to the analytic structure of the amplitude in the region below pi N threshold. Our results are M_pole = (1363^{+9}_{-6} -i79^{+3}_{-5}) MeV and (1373^{+12}_{-10} -i114^{+14}_{-9}) MeV. We also demonstrate that the number of poles in the 1.5 GeV < W < 2 GeV region could be more than one, depending on how the structure of the single-energy solution of SAID is fitted. For three-pole solutions, our best estimated result of a pole near N(1710) listed by Particle Data Group is (1829^{+131}_{-65} -i192^{+88}_{-110}) MeV which is close to the results of several previous analyses. Our results indicate the need of more accurate pi N reaction data in the W > 1.6 GeV region for high precision resonance extractions.

Medium Modifications of the Rho Meson in Nuclear Photoproduction

We extend our recent study of dilepton invariant-mass spectra from the decays of rho mesons produced by photon reactions off nuclei. We specifically focus on experimental spectra as recently measured by the CLAS Collaboration at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility using carbon and iron nuclei. Building on our earlier work we broaden our description to a larger set of observables in order to identify sensitivities to the medium effects predicted by microscopic calculations of the rho spectral function. We compute mass spectra for several target nuclei and study the spectral shape as a function of the 3-momentum of the outgoing lepton pair. We also compute the so-called nuclear transparency ratio which provides an alternative means (and thus consistency check) of estimating the inelastic rho width in the cold nuclear medium.

We study coherent pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering in the energy region relevant to neutrino oscillation experiments of current interest. Our approach is based on a combined use of the Sato-Lee model of electroweak pion production on a nucleon and the Delta-hole model of pion-nucleus reactions. Thus we develop a model which describes pion-nucleus scattering and electroweak coherent pion production in a unified manner. Numerical calculations are carried out for the case of the 12C target. All the free parameters in our model are fixed by fitting to both total and elastic differential cross sections for pi-12C scattering. Then we demonstrate the reliability of our approach by confronting our prediction for the coherent pion photo-productions with data. Finally, we calculate total and differential cross sections for neutrino-induced coherent pion production, and some of the results are (will be) compared with the recent (forthcoming) data from K2K, SciBooNE and MiniBooNE. We also study effect of the non-locality of the Delta-propagation in the nucleus, and compare the elementary amplitudes used in different microscopic calculations.

Medium Effects in rho-Meson Photoproduction

We compute dilepton invariant mass spectra from the decays of rho mesons produced by photon reactions off nuclei. Our calculations employ a realistic model for the rho photoproduction amplitude on the nucleon which provides fair agreement with measured cross sections. Medium effects are implemented via an earlier constructed rho propagator based on hadronic many-body theory. At incoming photon energies of 1.5 -3 GeV as used by the CLAS experiment at JLAB, the average density probed for iron targets is estimated at about half saturation density. At the pertinent rho-meson 3-momenta the predicted medium effects on the rho propagator are rather moderate. The resulting dilepton spectra approximately agree with recent CLAS data.

An isotopic effect in phi photoproduction at a few GeV

A distinct isotopic effect in phi photoproduction at 2-5 GeV region is identified by examining the production amplitudes due to Pomeron-exchange and meson-exchange mechanisms. This effect is mainly caused by the pi-eta interference constrained by SU(3) symmetry and the isotopic structure of the gamma NN coupling in the direct phi-radiation amplitude. It can be tested experimentally by measuring differences in the polarization observables between the gamma-p and gamma-n reactions.

Exclusive diffractive processes and the quark substructure of mesons

Exclusive diffractive processes on the nucleon are investigated within a model in which the quark-nucleon interaction is mediated by Pomeron exchange and the quark substructure of mesons is described within a framework based on the Dyson-Schwinger equations of QCD. The model quark-nucleon interaction has four parameters which are completely determined by high-energy $πN$ and $K N$ elastic scattering data. The model is then used to predict vector-meson electroproduction observables. The obtained $ρ$- and $ϕ$-meson electroproduction cross sections are in excellent agreement with experimental data. The predicted $q^2$ dependence of $J/ψ$-meson electroproduction also agrees with experimental data. It is shown that confined-quark dynamics play a central role in determining the behavior of the diffractive, vector-meson electroproduction cross section. In particular, the onset of the asymptotic $1/q^4$ behavior of the cross section is determined by a momentum scale that is set by the current-quark masses of the quark and antiquark inside the vector meson. This is the origin of the striking differences between the $q^2$ dependence of $ρ$-, $ϕ$- and $J/ψ$-meson electroproduction cross sections observed in recent experiments.

Determination of the $πNN$ form factor from the threshold pion production of $pp$ scattering

It is shown that the threshold productions of $π^0 pp$, $π^+ np$ and $π^+ d$ from $pp$ collisions can be consistently described by a model consisting of a pion s-wave rescattering and $N\bar N$ pair-terms of heavy-meson exchanges. The large difference between $σ^{tot} (pp\rightarrowπ^+ d)$ and $σ^{tot} (pp\rightarrowπ^+ np)$ is understood from the orthogonality of the deuteron and the $np$ scattering wave functions. In a calculation using the Paris potential to account for the initial and final $NN$ interactions, it is found that the data can be best reproduced by using a soft $πNN$ form factor with $Λ_π =650 $ MeV for a monopole form. This is consistent with an earlier study of pion production in the $Δ$ excitation region.

Threshold Pion Electroproduction in Chiral Perturbation Theory

Electroproduction of pions on the nucleon near the threshold is analyzed within the framework of baryon chiral perturbation theory. We give a thorough discussion of the low--energy theorems related to charged and neutral electropionproduction. It is shown how the axial radius of the nucleon can be related to the S--wave multipoles $E_{0+}^{(-)}$ and $L_{0+}^{(-)}$. The chiral perturbation theory calculations of the $γ^\star p \to π^0 p$ reaction are found to be in good agreement with the recent near threshold data. We also discuss the influence of some isospin--breaking effects in this channel. For future experimental tests of the underlying chiral dynamics, extensive predictions of differential cross sections and multipole amplitudes are presented.
