Stuckelberg SUSY QED and Infrared Problem

We review gauge invariant $\mathcal N =1$ supersymmetric massive $U(1)$ gauge theory coupled to matter and Stuckelberg superfields. We focus on the leading order self energy and vertex correction to the matter field in the massless limit of both the $U(1)$ vector superfield and the Stuckelberg superfield. We explicitly verify that the theory is infrared divergence free in the massless limit. Hence the Stuckelberg mechanism appears to be the efficient route to handle infrared divergences seen in supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics.Since these additional particles have very small masses they can serve as dark matter candidates through `Ultralight particles' mechanism.

Modelling quantum black hole

Novel bound states are obtained for manifolds with singular potentials. These singular potentials require proper boundary conditions across boundaries. The number of bound states match nicely with what we would expect for black holes. Also they serve to model membrane mechanism for the black hole horizons in simpler contexts. The singular potentials can also mimic expanding boundaries elegantly, there by obtaining appropriately tuned radiation rates.

Fermionic edge states and new physics

We investigate the properties of the Dirac operator on manifolds with boundaries in presence of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary condition. An exact counting of the number of edge states for boundaries with isometry of a sphere is given. We show that the problem with the above boundary condition can be mapped to one where the manifold is extended beyond the boundary and the boundary condition is replaced by a delta function potential of suitable strength. We also briefly highlight how the problem of the self-adjointness of the operators in the presence of moving boundaries can be simplified by suitable transformations which render the boundary fixed and modify the Hamiltonian and the boundary condition to reflect the effect of moving boundary.

Algebraic Approach to Entanglement and Entropy

We present a general approach to quantum entanglement and entropy that is based on algebras of observables and states thereon. In contrast to more standard treatments, Hilbert space is an emergent concept, appearing as a representation space of the observable algebra, once a state is chosen. In this approach, which is based on the Gelfand-Naimark-Segal construction, the study of subsystems becomes particularly clear. We explicitly show how the problems associated with partial trace for the study of entanglement of identical particles are readily overcome. In particular, a suitable entanglement measure is proposed, that can be applied to systems of particles obeying Fermi, Bose, para- and even braid group statistics. The generality of the method is also illustrated by the study of time evolution of subsystems emerging from restriction to subalgebras. Also, problems related to anomalies and quantum epistemology are discussed.

Electric Dipole Moment from QCD $θ$ and How It Vanishes for Mixed States

In a previous paper [1], we studied the $η'$ mass and formulated its chirally symmetric coupling to fermions which induces electric dipole moment (EDM). Here we calculate the EDM to one-loop. It is finite, having no ultraviolet divergence while its infrared divergence is canceled by soft photon emission processes \emph{exactly} as for $θ=0$. The coupling does not lead to new divergences (not present for $\sinθ=0$) in soft photon processes either. Furthermore, as it was argued previously [1], the EDM vanishes if suitable mixed quantum states are used. This means that in a quantum theory based on such mixed states, a strong bound on EDM will not necessarily lead to a strong bound such as $|\sin θ|\lesssim 10^{-11}$ . This fact eliminates the need to fine-tune $θ$ or for the axion field.

Entanglement, Particle Identity and the GNS Construction: A Unifying Approach

A novel approach to entanglement, based on the Gelfand-Naimark-Segal (GNS) construction, is introduced. It considers states as well as algebras of observables on an equal footing. The conventional approach to the emergence of mixed from pure ones based on taking partial traces is replaced by the more general notion of the restriction of a state to a subalgebra. For bipartite systems of nonidentical particles, this approach reproduces the standard results. But it also very naturally overcomes the limitations of the usual treatment of systems of identical particles. This GNS approach seems very general and can be applied for example to systems obeying para- and braid- statistics including anyons.

Novel Studies on the η' Effective Lagrangian

The effective Lagrangian for η' incorporating the effect of the QCD θ-angle has been developed previously. We revisit this Lagrangian and carry out its canonical quantization with particular attention to the test function spaces of constraints and the topology of the η'-field. In this way, we discover a new chirally symmetric coupling of this field to chiral multiplets which involves in particular fermions. This coupling violates P and T symmetries. In a subsequent paper, we will evaluate its contribution to the electric dipole moment (EDM) of fermions. Our motivation is to test whether the use of mixed states restores P and T invariance, so that EDM vanishes. This calculation will be shown to have striking new physical consequences.

Topological stability of broken symmetry on fuzzy spheres

We study the spontaneous symmetry breaking of O(3) scalar field on a fuzzy sphere $S_F^2$. We find that the fluctuations in the background of topological configurations are finite. This is in contrast to the fluctuations around a uniform configuration which diverge, due to Mermin-Wagner-Hohenberg-Coleman theorem, leading to the decay of the condensate. Interesting implications of enhanced topological stability of the configurations are pointed out.

Twisted bosonization in two dimensional noncommutative spacetime

We study the twisted bosonization of massive Thirring model to relate to sine-Gordon model in Moyal spacetime using twisted commutation relations. We obtain the relevant twisted bosonization rules. We show that there exists dual rela- tionship between twisted bosonic and fermionic operators. The strong-weak duality is also observed to be preserved as its commutative counterpart.

Novel black hole bound states and entropy

We solve for the spectrum of the Laplacian as a Hamiltonian on $\mathbb{R}^{2}-\mathbb{D}$ and in $\mathbb{R}^{3}-\mathbb{B}$. A self-adjointness analysis with $\partial\mathbb{D}$ and $\partial\mathbb{B}$ as the boundary for the two cases shows that a general class of boundary conditions for which the Hamiltonian operator is essentially self-adjoint are of the mixed (Robin) type. With this class of boundary conditions we obtain "bound state" solutions for the Schroedinger equation. Interestingly, these solutions are all localized near the boundary. We further show that the number of bound states is finite and is in fact proportional to the perimeter or area of the removed \emph{disc} or \emph{ball}. We then argue that similar considerations should hold for static black hole backgrounds with the horizon treated as the boundary.

Thermofield dynamics and twisted Poincaré symmetry on Moyal space-time

On Moyal space-time, one can implement twisted Poincaré symmetry with the resultant modification of symmetrization and anti-symmetrization postulates for bosons and fermions. We develop the thermofield approach of Umezawa and Takahashi on such a spacetime preserving the twisted Poincaré symmetry of the underlying quantum field theory(qft). Implications of this twisted Poincaré symmetry for qft's at finite temperature are pointed out.

Beyond fuzzy spheres

We study polynomial deformations of the fuzzy sphere, specifically given by the cubic or the Higgs algebra. We derive the Higgs algebra by quantizing the Poisson structure on a surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We find that several surfaces, differing by constants, are described by the Higgs algebra at the fuzzy level. Some of these surfaces have a singularity and we overcome this by quantizing this manifold using coherent states for this nonlinear algebra. This is seen in the measure constructed from these coherent states. We also find the star product for this non-commutative algebra as a first step in constructing field theories on such fuzzy spaces.

Unitary Quantum Physics with Time-Space Noncommutativity

In this work quantum physics in noncommutative spacetime is developed. It is based on the work of Doplicher et al. which allows for time-space noncommutativity. The Moyal plane is treated in detail. In the context of noncommutative quantum mechanics, some important points are explored, such as the formal construction of the theory, symmetries, causality, simultaneity and observables. The dynamics generated by a noncommutative Schrodinger equation is studied. We prove in particular the following: suppose the Hamiltonian of a quantum mechanical particle on spacetime has no explicit time dependence, and the spatial coordinates commute in its noncommutative form (the only noncommutativity being between time and a space coordinate). Then the commutative and noncommutative versions of the Hamiltonian have identical spectra.
