Dynamics of accretion and winds in tidal disruption events

We have constructed self-similar models of a time-dependent accretion disk in both sub and super-Eddington phases with wind outflows for tidal disruption events (TDEs). The physical input parameters are the black hole (BH) mass $M_{\bullet}$, specific orbital energy $E$ and angular momentum $J$, star mass $M_{\star}$ and radius $R_{\star}$. We consider the sub-Eddington phase to be total pressure (model A1) and gas pressure (model A2) dominated. In contrast, the super-Eddington phase is dominated by radiation pressure (model B) with Thomson opacity. We derive the viscosity prescribed by the stress tensor, $Π_{rϕ}\propto Σ_d^b r^d$ where $Σ_d$ is the surface density of the disk, $r$ is the radius and $b$ and $d$ are constants. The specific choice of radiative or $α$ viscosity is motivated, and its parameters are decided by the expected disk luminosity and evolution time scale being in the observed range. The disk evolves due to mass loss by accretion onto the black hole and outflowing wind, and mass gain by fallback of the debris; this results in an increasing outer radius. We have simulated the luminosity profile for both sub and super-Eddington disks. As an illustrative example, we fit our models to the observations in X-ray, UV, and Optical of four TDE events and deduce the physical parameters above.

Relativistic accretion disc in tidal disruption events

We construct a time-dependent relativistic accretion model for tidal disruption events (TDEs) with an $α-$viscosity and the pressure dominated by gas pressure. We also include the mass fallback rate $\dot{M}_f$ for both full and partial disruption TDEs, and assume that the infalling debris forms a seed disc in time $t_c$, which evolves due to the mass addition from the infalling debris and the mass loss via accretion onto the black hole. Besides, we derive an explicit form for the disc height that depends on the angular momentum parameter in the disc. We show that the surface density of the disc increases at an initial time due to mass addition, and then decreases as the mass fallback rate decreases, which results in a decrease in the disc mass $M_{\rm d}$ with a late-time evolution of $M_{\rm d} \propto t^{-1.05}$ and $M_{\rm d} \propto t^{-1.38}$ for full and partial disruption TDEs respectively, where $t$ is the time parameter. The bolometric luminosity $L$ shows a rise and decline that follows a power-law at late times given by $L \propto t^{-1.8}$ and $L \propto t^{-2.3}$ for full and partial disruption TDEs respectively. Our obtained luminosity declines faster than the luminosity inferred using $L \propto \dot{M}_f$. We also compute the light curves in various spectral bands.

Black hole demographics from TDE modeling

The occurrence rate of tidal disruption events (TDEs) by survey missions depend on the black hole mass function of the galaxies, properties of the stellar cusp and mass of the central black hole. Using a power law density profile with Kroupa mass function, we solve the steady state Fokker-Planck to calculate the theoretical capture rate of stars by the black hole. Using a steady accretion model, the Schechter black hole mass function (BHMF) and the cosmological parameters, we calculate the detection rate of TDEs for various surveys which is then fit with the observed TDE rates to extract the Schechter parameters. The rate tension between observation ($\sim 10^{-5}~{\rm yr^{-1}}$) and theory ($\sim 10^{-4}~{\rm yr^{-1}}$) for individual galaxies is explained by the statistical average over the BHMF.

Stellar and gas dynamical model for tidal disruption events in a quiescent galaxy

A detailed model of the tidal disruption events (TDEs) has been constructed using stellar dynamical and gas dynamical inputs that include black hole (BH) mass $M_{\bullet}$, specific orbital energy $E$ and angular momentum $J$, star mass $M_{\star}$ and radius $R_{\star}$, and the pericenter of the star orbit $r_{p}(E,\hspace{1mm}J,\hspace{1mm}M_{\bullet})$. We solved the steady state Fokker--Planck equation using the standard loss cone theory for the galactic density profile $ρ(r) \propto r^{-γ}$ and stellar mass function $ξ(m) $ where $m=M_{\star}/M_{\odot}$ and obtained the feeding rate of stars to the BH integrated over the phase space as $\dot{N}_{t} \propto M_{\bullet}^β$, where $β= -0.3\pm 0.01$ for $M_{\bullet}>10^7 M_{\odot}$ and $\sim 6.8 \hspace{1mm} \times 10^{-5}$ Yr$^{-1}$ for $γ=0.7$. We use this to model the in-fall rate of the disrupted debris, $\dot{M}(E,\hspace{1mm}J,\hspace{1mm}m,\hspace{1mm}t)$, and discuss the conditions for the disk formation, finding that the accretion disk is almost always formed for the fiduciary range of the physical parameters. We also find the conditions under which the disk formed from the tidal debris of a given star with a super Eddington accretion phase. We have simulated the light curve profiles in the relevant optical g band and soft X-rays for both super and sub-Eddington accretion disks as a function of $\dot{M}(E,\hspace{1mm}J,\hspace{1mm}t)$. Using this, standard cosmological parameters, and mission instrument details, we predict the detectable TDE rates for various forthcoming surveys finally as a function of $γ$.
