Radial spin texture in elemental tellurium with chiral crystal structure

The chiral crystal is characterized by a lack of mirror symmetry and an inversion center, resulting in the inequivalent right- and left-handed structures. In the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, the spin and momentum of electrons are locked in the reciprocal space with the help of the spin-orbit interaction. To reveal the spin textures of chiral crystals, here we investigate the spin and electronic structure in p-type semiconductor elemental tellurium with a chiral crystal structure by using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our data demonstrate that the highest valence band crossing the Fermi level has a spin component parallel to the electron momentum around the BZ corners. Significantly, we have also confirmed that the spin polarization is reversed in the crystal with the opposite chirality. The results indicate that the spin textures of the right- and left-handed chiral crystals are hedgehog-like, leading to unconventional magnetoelectric effects and nonreciprocal phenomena.

Thermal generation of spin current in an antiferromagnet

Longitudinal spin Seebeck effect has been investigated for an uniaxial antiferromagnetic insulator Cr2O3, characterized by a spin-flop transition under magnetic field along the c-axis. We have found that temperature gradient applied normal to Cr2O3/Pt interface induces inverse spin Hall voltage of spin current origin in Pt, whose magnitude turns out to be always proportional to magnetization in Cr2O3. The observed voltage shows significant enhancement for the lower temperature region, which can be ascribed to the phonon-drag effect on the relevant spin excitations. The above results establish that antiferromagnetic spin waves with high frequency above 100 GHz can be an effective carrier of spin current.

Effect of lattice geometry on magnon Hall effect in ferromagnetic insulators

We have investigated the thermal Hall effect of magnons for various ferromagnetic insulators. For pyrochlore ferromagnetic insulators Lu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$, Ho$_2$V$_2$O$_7$, and In$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$, finite thermal Hall conductivities have been observed below the Curie temperature $T_C$ . From the temperature and magnetic field dependences, it is concluded that magnons are responsible for the thermal Hall effect. The Hall effect of magnons can be well explained by the theory based on the Berry curvature in momentum space induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. The analysis has been extended to the transition metal (TM) oxides with perovskite structure. The thermal Hall signal was absent or far smaller in La$_2$NiMnO$_6$ and YTiO$_3$, which have the distorted perovskite structure with four TM ions in the unit cell. On the other hand, a finite thermal Hall response is discernible below $T_C$ in another ferromagentic perovskite oxide BiMnO$_3$, which shows orbital ordering with a larger unit cell. The presence or absence of the thermal Hall effect in insulating pyrochlore and perovskite systems reflect the geometric and topological aspect of DM-induced magnon Hall effect.

Observation of the Magnon Hall Effect

The Hall effect usually occurs when the Lorentz force acts on a charge current in a conductor in the presence of perpendicular magnetic field. On the other hand, neutral quasi-particles such as phonons and spins can carry heat current and potentially show the Hall effect without resorting to the Lorentz force. We report experimental evidence for the anomalous thermal Hall effect caused by spin excitations (magnons) in an insulating ferromagnet with a pyrochlore lattice structure. Our theoretical analysis indicates that the propagation of the spin wave is influenced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spin-orbit interaction, which plays the role of the vector potential as in the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in metallic ferromagnets.
