Magnetic phase diagram of HoFeO$_3$ by neutron diffraction

Neutron diffraction studies of HoFeO$_3$ single crystal were performed under external magnetic fields. The interplay between the external magnetic field, Dzyaloshinsky-Moria antisymmetric exchange and isotropic exchange interactions between Fe and Ho sublattice and inside Fe sublattice provides a rich phase diagram. As the result of the balance of exchange interactions inside crystal and external magnetic field we found 8 different magnetic phases, produced or suppressed by the field.

Temperature evolution of magnetic structure of HoFeO$_3$ by single crystal neutron diffraction

We have investigated the temperature evolution of the magnetic structures of HoFeO$_3$ by single crystal neutron diffraction. The three different magnetic structures found as a function of temperature for \hfo\ are described by the magnetic groups Pb$'$n$'2_1$, Pbn$2_1$ and Pbn$'2_1'$ and are stable in the temperature ranges $\approx$ 600-55~K, 55-37~K and 35$>T>2$~K respectively. In all three the fundamental coupling between the Fe sub-lattices remains the same and only their orientation and the degree of canting away from the ideal axial direction varies. The magnetic polarisation of the Ho sub-lattices in these two higher temperature regions, in which the major components of the Fe moment lie along $x$ and $y$, is very small. The canting of the moments from the axial directions is attributed to the antisymmetric interactions allowed by the crystal symmetry. They include contributions from single ion anisotropy as well as the Dzyaloshinski antisymmetric exchange. In the low temperature phase two further structural transitions are apparent in which the spontaneous magnetisation changes sign with respect to the underlying antiferromagnetic configuration. In this temperature range the antisymmetric exchange energy varies rapidly as the the Ho sub-lattices begin to order. So long as the ordered Ho moments are small the antisymmetric exchange is due only to Fe-Fe interactions, but as the degree of Ho order increases the Fe-Ho interactions take over whilst at the lowest temperatures, when the Ho moments approach saturation the Ho-Ho interactions dominate. The reversals of the spontaneous magnetisation found in this study suggest that in \hfo\ the sums of the Fe-Fe and Ho-Ho antisymmetric interactions have the same sign as one another, but that of the Ho-Fe terms is opposite.

Magnetic structure of the Eu2+ moments in superconducting EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 with x = 0.19

The magnetic structure of the Eu2+ moments in the superconducting EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 sample with x = 0.19 has been determined using neutron scattering. We conclude that the Eu2+ moments are aligned along the c direction below T_C = 19.0(1) K with an ordered moment of 6.6(2) mu_B in the superconducting state. An impurity phase similar to the underdoped phase exists within the bulk sample which orders antiferromagnetically below T_N = 17.0(2) K. We found no indication of iron magnetic order, nor any incommensurate magnetic order of the Eu2+ moments in the sample.

Emergence of pressure-induced metamagnetic-like state in Mn-doped CdGeAs2 chalcopyrite

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on resistivity and magnetic ac susceptibility has been studied in Mn-doped CdGeAs2 room-temperature (RT) ferromagnetic chalcopyrite with two types of MnAs micro-clusters. The slight increase of temperature by about 30 K in the region between RT and Curie temperature TC causes a significant change in the positions of pressure-induced semiconductor-metal transition and magnetic phase transitions in low pressure area. By conducting measurements of the anomalous Hall resistance in the field H \leq 5 kOe, we present experimental evidence for pressure-induced metamagnetic-like state during the paramagnetic phase at pressure P = 5 GPa.

Inelastic neutron scattering study of crystal field excitations of Nd3+ in NdFeAsO

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed to investigate the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations of Nd3+ (J = 9/2) in the iron pnictide NdFeAsO. The crystal field level structures for both the high-temperature paramagnetic phase and the low-temperature antiferromagnetic phase of NdFeAsO are constructed. The variation of CEF excitations of Nd3+ reflects not only the change of local symmetry but also the change of magnetic ordered state of the Fe sublattice. By analyzing the crystal field interaction with a crystal field Hamiltonian, the crystal field parameters are obtained. It was found that the sign of the fourth and sixth-order crystal field parameters change upon the magnetic phase transition at 140 K, which may be due to the variation of exchange interactions between the 4f and conduction electrons.

Magnetic anisotropic energy gap and low energy spin wave excitation in antiferromagnetic block phase of K2Fe4Se5

Neutron scattering experiments were performed to investigate magnetic order and magnetic excitations in ternary iron chalcogenide K2Fe4Se5. The formation of a superlattice structure below 580 K together with the decoupling between the Fe-vacancy order-disorder transition and the antiferromagnetic order transition appears to be a common feature in the A2Fe4Se5 family. The study of spin dynamics of K2Fe4Se5 reveals two distinct energy gaps at the magnetic Brillouin zone center, which indicates the presence of magnetic anisotropy and the decrease of local symmetry due to electronic and orbital anisotropy. The low-energy spin wave excitations of K2Fe4Se5 can be properly described by linear spin wave theory within a Heisenberg model. Compared to iron pnictides, K2Fe4Se5 exhibits a more two-dimensional magnetism as characterized by large differences not only between out-of-plane and in-plane spin wave velocities, but also between out-of-plane and in-plane exchange interactions.

Magnetization distribution and orbital moment in the non-Superconducting Chalcogenide Compound K0.8Fe1.6Se2

We have used polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction to determine the spatial distribution of the magnetization density induced by a magnetic field of 9 T in the tetragonal phase of K0.8Fe1.6Se2. The maximum entropy reconstruction shows clearly that most of the magnetization is confined to the region around the iron atoms whereas there is no significant magnetization associated with either Se or K atoms. The distribution of magnetization around the Fe atom is slightly nonspherical with a shape which is extended along the [0 0 1] direction in the projection. Multipolar refinement results show that the electrons which give rise to the paramagnetic susceptibility are confined to the Fe atoms and their distribution suggests that they occupy 3d t2g-type orbitals with around 66% in those of xz/yz symmetry. Detail modeling of the magnetic form factor indicates the presence of an orbital moment to the total paramagnetic moment of Fe2+

Direct observation of low energy nuclear spin excitations in HoCrO$_3$ by high resolution neutron spectroscopy

We have investigated low energy nuclear spin excitations in strongly correlated electron compound HoCrO$_3$. We observe clear inelastic peaks at $E = 22.18 \pm 0.04$ $μeV$ in both energy loss and gain sides. The energy of the inelastic peaks remains constant in the temperature range 1.5 - 40 K at which they are observed. The intensity of the inelastic peak increases at first with increasing temperature and then decreases at higher temperatures. The temperature dependence of the energy and intensity of the inelastic peaks is very unusual compared to that observed in other Nd, Co and V compounds. Huge quasielastic scattering appears at higher temperatures presumably due to the fluctuating electronic moments of the Ho ions that get increasingly disordered at higher temperatures.

Glassy magnetic phase driven by short range charge and magnetic ordering in nanocrystalline La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3-δ}$: Magnetization, Mossbauer, and polarised neutron studies

The charge ordered La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3-δ}$ (LSFO) in bulk and nanocrystalline forms are investigated using ac and dc magnetization, Mössbauer, and polarised neutron studies. A complex scenario of short range charge and magnetic ordering is realized from the polarised neutron studies in nanocrystalline specimen. This short range ordering does not involve any change in spin state and modification in the charge disproportion between Fe$^{3+}$ and Fe$^{5+}$ compared to bulk counterpart as evident in the Mössbauer results. The refinement of magnetic diffraction peaks provides magnetic moments of Fe$^{3+}$ and Fe$^{5+}$ are about 3.15$μ_B$ and 1.57$μ_B$ for bulk, and 2.7$μ_B$ and 0.53$μ_B$ for nanocrystalline specimen, respectively. The destabilization of charge ordering leads to magnetic phase separation, giving rise to the robust exchange bias (EB) effect. Strikingly, EB field at 5 K attains a value as high as 4.4 kOe for average size $\sim$ 70 nm, which is zero for the bulk counterpart. A strong frequency dependence of ac susceptibility reveals cluster-glass like transition around $\sim$ 65 K, below which EB appears. Overall results propose that finite size effect directs the complex glassy magnetic behavior driven by unconventional short range charge and magnetic ordering, and magnetic phase separation appears in nanocrystalline LSFO.

Local structure of ReO$_3$ at ambient pressure from neutron total scattering study

A hypothesis that the local rotations of ReO$_6$ octahedra persist in the crystallographically untilted ambient phase of ReO$_3$ is examined by the high-resolution neutron time-of-flight total scattering based atomic pair distribution function analysis. Three candidate models were tested, Pm$\bar{3}$m, P4/mbm, and Im$\bar{3}$, for the local structure of ReO$_3$ at ambient pressure and 12 K, and both quantitative and qualitative assessment of the data were performed. No evidence for large local octahedral rotations was found, suggesting that the local and the average structure are the same (Pm$\bar{3}$m) as normally assumed.

Polarisation dependence of magnetic Bragg scattering in YMn$_2$O$_5$

The polarisation dependence of the intensity of elastic magnetic scattering from \ymno\ single crystals has been measured at 25 K in magnetic fields between 1 and 9 T. A significant polarisation dependence was observed in the intensities of magnetic satellite reflections, propagation vector $ \pv=0.5,0,0.25$ measured with both the [100] and [010] axes parallel to the common polarisation and applied field direction. The intensity asymmetries $A$ observed in sets of orthorhombicly equivalent reflections show systematic relationships which allow the phase relationship between different components of their magnetic interaction vectors to be determined. They fix the orientation relationships between the small $y$ and $z$ moments on the \mnfp\ and \mntp\ sub-lattices and lend support to the structure reported by Kim et al. It was found that that $A(hkl)\ne A(\bar h\bar k\bar l)$ which suggests that there is a small modulation of the nuclear structure which has the same wave-vector as the magnetic modulation leading to a small nuclear structure factor for the satellite reflections. The differences $A(hkl)- A(\bar h\bar k\bar l)$ observed indicate shifts in the atomic positions of order 0.005 Å.

Direct evidence for the magnetic ordering of Nd ions in NdFeAsO by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering

We investigated the low energy excitations in the parent compound NdFeAsO of the Fe-pnictide superconductor in the $μ$eV range by a back scattering neutron spectrometer. The energy scans on a powder NdFeAsO sample revealed inelastic peaks at E = 1.600 $ \pm 0.003 μ$eV at T = 0.055 K on both energy gain and energy loss sides. The inelastic peaks move gradually towards lower energy with increasing temperature and finally merge with the elastic peak at about 6 K. We interpret the inelastic peaks to be due to the transition between hyperfine-split nuclear level of the $^{143}$Nd and $^{145}$Nd isotopes with spin $I = 7/2$. The hyperfine field is produced by the ordering of the electronic magnetic moment of Nd at low temperature and thus the present investigation gives direct evidence of the ordering of the Nd magnetic sublattice of NdFeAsO at low temperature.

Direct evidence for the magnetic ordering of Nd ions in NdMn$_2$Si$_2$ and NdMn$_2$Ge$_2$ by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering

We have investigated the low energy nuclear spin excitations in NdMn$_2$Si$_2$ and NdMn$_2$Ge$_2$ by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering. Previous neutron diffraction investigations gave ambiguous results about Nd magnetic ordering at low temperatures. The present element-specific technique gave direct evidence for the magnetic ordering of Nd ions. We found considerable difference in the process of the Nd magnetic ordering at low temperature in NdMn$_2$Si$_2$ and NdMn$_2$Ge$_2$. Our results are consistent with those of magnetization and recent neutron diffraction measurements.

Dynamical Response of Single Bi-layer Spin Model : A Theoretical Analysis

The spin dynamics of a single bi-layer ferromagnetic model, as proposed for a manganite system $La_{1.2}Sr_{1.8}Mn_{2}O_{7}$ as an approximate minimal model, is studied both below and above the bulk magnetic transition temperature using the semi-classical Monte Carlo-molecular dynamics technique. The quantities studied are:- (i) the static spin configurations, (ii) the spin auto-correlation function (SAF) $C(t)$ and (iii) the dynamical structure function (DSF) $S(\bf q, ω)$. The major aim is to probe the nature of collective modes and in particular to ascertain whether the propagating modes can exist above the ordering temperature. We find that the typical spin configurations contain a high degree of mis-aligned spins, particularly in the high temperature phase. Nevertheless, in the low temperature phase a long range ferromagnetic ordering can be seen. The shape of the curves corresponding to $S(\bf q, ω)$ vs. $ω$ in the constant $\bf q$-scan are found in general to be quite complex viz. containing peaks, cusps and broad plateau. Moreover, in a large regime of $(\bf q, ω)$ space, $S(\bf q ,ω)$ is found to be negative, signalling a total breakdown of the semi-classical approximation in the presence of the enormous thermodynamic and quantum fluctuations. Considering the physically allowed regime only, we can theoretically extract an effective $ω$ vs. $q$ dispersion curve for the collective excitations, which exhibits a slope opposite to that expected for a full three-dimensional system and disagrees with the results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments in the nature of the dispersion curve along the $<100>$ direction in the ordered phase. The theoretical results also exhibit the existence of propagating modes even in the high temperature (disordered) phase from our calculations based on a minimal single bi-layer ferromagnetic model.

Magnetic and magnetoresistive properties of cubic Laves phase HoAl$_2$ single crystal

We report the magnetization ($M$) and magnetoresistance (MR) results of HoAl$_2$ single crystals oriented along $<100>$ and $<110>$ directions. Although HoAl$_2$ has cubic Laves phase structure, a large anisotropy is observed in $M$ and MR results below Curie temperature ($T_C$) at 31.5 K. A satisfactory correlation between magnetic entropy change ($ΔS_M$) and MR could be established along $<110>$ direction and in $<100>$ direction except for the temperature ($T$) region, around which spin reorientation takes place. Large inverse magnetocaloric effect is observed at low-$T$ which is associated with the spin reorientation process in $<100>$ direction. A theoretical model based on Landau theory of phase transition can describe $T$-variation of -$ΔS_M$ for $T > T_C$.

Multiferroic coupling in nanoscale BiFeO3

Using the results of x-ray and neutron diffraction experiments, we show that the ferroelectric polarization, in ~22 nm particles of BiFeO3, exhibits a jump by ~30% around the magnetic transition point T_N (~635 K) and a suppression by ~7% under 5T magnetic field at room temperature (<<T_N). These results confirm presence of strong multiferroic coupling even in nanoscale BiFeO3 and thus could prove to be quite useful for applications based on nanosized devices of BiFeO3.

Strong coupling of Sm and Fe magnetism in SmFeAsO as revealed by magnetic x-ray scattering

The magnetic structures adopted by the Fe and Sm sublattices in SmFeAsO have been investigated using element specific x-ray resonant and non-resonant magnetic scattering techniques. Between 110 and 5 K, the Sm and Fe moments are aligned along the c and a directions, respectively according to the same magnetic representation $Γ_{5}$ and the same propagation vector (1, 0, 0.5). Below 5 K, magnetic order of both sublattices change to a different magnetic structure and the Sm moments reorder in a magnetic unit cell equal to the chemical unit cell. Modeling of the temperature dependence for the Sm sublattice as well as a change in the magnetic structure below 5 K provide a clear evidence of a surprisingly strong coupling between the two sublattices, and indicate the need to include anisotropic exchange interactions in models of SmFeAsO and related compounds.

Weak ferromagnetism and magnetic phase transitions in Gd$_2$CuO$_4$

We report a polarised neutron study of the magnetic structures and phase trasitions in \gdc\ in low magnetic fields. These experiments have been complemented by integrated intensity measurements with unpolarised neutrons in zero field. Polarised neutron flipping ratio measurements have been made with magnetic fields $H = 0.05$, 0.10 and 0.5 T in the temperature range 4-20 K. These have enabled us to deduce that the anomalous temperature behaviour of the coherent magnetic scattering from the Cu sublattice, which shows sharp intensity minima at \Tcn1 $\approx 18$K and \Tcn2 $\approx 8$ K, is due to cross-overs in the sign of the interaction between strongly coupled, weakly ferromagnetic, CuO$_2$ layers. At \Tcn1\ the coupling changes from ferromagnetic to anti-ferromagnetic and long-range order between layers is temporarily lost. \Tcn2\ is the temperature at which the Gd moments order and a further reorganisation of the interlayer order takes place. The weak ferromagnetism of the CuO layers is found to be due to a small rotation of the Cu moments in the same direction as that in which their coordinating oxygen squares rotate in the tetragonal to orthorhombic distortion of the crystal structure. Further analysis of the flipping ratio measurements has enabled us to model the magnetic structures of the zero-field and the field-induced phases of Gd$_2$CuO$_4$.

Field induced spin reorientation and giant spin-lattice coupling in EuFe2As2

We have studied a EuFe2As2 single crystal by neutron diffraction under magnetic fields up to 3.5 T and temperatures down to 2 K. A field induced spin reorientation is observed in the presence of a magnetic field along both the a and c axes, respectively. Above critical field, the ground state antiferromagnetic configuration of Eu$^{2+}$ moments transforms into a ferromagnetic structure with moments along the applied field direction. The magnetic phase diagram for Eu magnetic sublattice in EuFe2As2 is presented. A considerable strain ($\sim$0.9%) is induced by the magnetic field, caused by the realignment of the twinning structure. Furthermore, the realignment of the twinning structure is found to be reversible with the rebound of magnetic field, which suggested the existence of magnetic shape-memory effect. The Eu moment ordering exhibits close relationship with the twinning structure. We argue that the Zeeman energy in combined with magnetic anisotropy energy is responsible for the observed spin-lattice coupling.

Magnetisation distribution in the tetragonal phase of BaFe2As2

We have determined the spatial distribution of the magnetisation induced by a field of 9 T in the tetragonal phase of BaFe2As2 using polarised neutron diffraction. Magnetic structure factors derived from the polarisation dependence of the intensities of Bragg reflections were used to make a maximum entropy reconstruction of the distribution projected on the 110 plane. The reconstruction shows clearly that the magnetisation is confined to the region around the iron atoms and that there is no significant magnetisation associated with either the As or Ba atoms. The distribution of magnetisation around the Fe atom is significantly non-spherical with a shape which is extended in the <111> directions in the projection. These results show that the electrons which give rise to the paramagnetic susceptibility are confined to the Fe atoms their distribution suggests that they occupy 3d t_2g type orbitals with about 60% in those of xy symmetry.

Phonon dynamics in SrFe2As2 and SrFeAsF parent pnictide compounds: How different/similar when compared to Ca- and Ba-compounds?

We report detailed measurements of temperature dependence and ab initio lattice dynamical calculations of the phonon density-of-states of two Sr based iron pnictide parent compounds; SrFe2As2 and SrFeAsF. Although both compounds undergo a magnetic as well as a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transitions, no drastic change of their phonon spectra is found in the temperature range from 2 to 300 K.. In both the systems the Fe-As stretching modes at 32 meV react to the temperature change and shift towards higher energies with decreasing temperature. Furthermore, we found that in the antiferromagnetic phase of SrFe2As2 at 180 K a peak at 25 meV, due to Fe vibrations, moves slightly to higher energies and become narrower on cooling from 300 K. However we did not find any evidence of softening of low energy phonon modes in both SrFe2As2 and SrFeAsF on decreasing the temperature from 300 K in their paramagnetic phase. This is contrary to our earlier observation of phonon softening in CaFe2As2, Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 and Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2. For the sake of comparison, the previously studied Ca- and Ba-cases are also presented and the role of the magnetic ordering on the calculated phonon spectra in these two families of pnictides is reported.

Effects of magnetic doping and temperature dependence on phonon dynamics in CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF compounds (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12)

We report detailed measurements of composition as well as temperature dependence of the phonon density-of-states in a new series of FeAs compounds with composition CaFe1\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12). The composition as well as temperature dependence of phonon spectra for CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) compounds have been measured using time of flight IN4C and IN6 spectrometers at ILL, France. The comparison of phonon spectra at 300 K in these compounds shows that acoustic phonon modes up to 12 meV harden in the doped compounds in comparison to the parent CaFeAsF. While intermediate energy phonon modes from 15 meV to 25 meV are also found to shift towards high energies only in the 12 % Co doped CaFeAsF compound. The experimental results for CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) are quite different from our previous phonon studies on parent and superconducting MFe2As2 (M=Ba, Ca, Sr) where low-energy acoustic phonon modes do not react with doping, while the phonon spectra in the intermediate range from 15 to 25 K are found to soften in these compounds. We argue that stronger spin phonon interaction play an important role for the emergence of superconductivity in these compounds. The lattice dynamics of CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) compounds is also investigated using the ab-initio as well as shell model phonon calculations. We show that the nature of the interaction between the Ca and the Fe-As layers in CaFeAsF compounds is quite different compared with our previous studies on CaFe2As2.

Neutron diffraction study on phase transition and thermal expansion of SrFeAsF

The magnetic ordering and crystal structure of iron pnictide SrFeAsF was investigated by using neutron powder diffraction method. With decreasing temperature, the tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition is found at 180 K, while the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition set in at 133 K. Similar to the parent compound of other iron pnictide system, the striped Fe magnetism is confirmed in antiferromagnetic phase and the Fe moment of 0.58(6) uB aligned along long a axis. The thermal expansion of orthorhombic phase of SrFeAsF is also investigated. Based on the Grueneisen approximation and Debye approximation for internal energy, the volume of SrFeAsF can be well fitted with Debye temperature of 347(5) K. The experimental atomic displacement parameters for different crystallographic sites in SrFeAsF are analyzed with Debye model. The results suggested that the expansion of FeAs layers plays an important role in determining the thermal expansion coefficient.

Phonon spectra in CaFe2As2 and Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2: Measurement of the pressure and temperature dependence and comparison with ab-initio and shell model calculations

We report the pressure and temperature dependence of the phonon density-of-states in superconducting Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 (Tc=21 K) and the parent compound CaFe2As2, using inelastic neutron scattering. We observe no significant change in the phonon spectrum for Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 at 295 K up to pressures of 5 kbar. The phonon spectrum for CaFe2As2 shows softening of the low-energy modes by about 1 meV when decreasing the temperature from 300 K to 180 K. There is no appreciable change in the phonon density of states across the structural and anti-ferromagnetic phase transition at 172 K. These results, combined with our earlier temperature dependent phonon density of states measurements for Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2, indicate that the softening of low-energy phonon modes in these compounds may be due to the interaction of phonons with electron or short-range spin fluctuations in the normal state of the superconducting compound as well as in the parent compound. The phonon spectra are analyzed with ab-initio and empirical model calculations giving partial densities of states and dispersion relations.

Understanding the insulating phase in CMR manganites: Shortening of the Jahn-Teller long-bond across the phase diagram of La_{1-x} Ca_x Mn O_3

The detailed evolution of the magnitude of the local Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion in La_{1-x} Ca_x Mn O_3 is obtained across the phase diagram for 0 < x < 0.5 from high quality neutron diffraction data using the atomic pair distribution function (PDF) method. A local JT distortion is observed in the insulating phase for all Ca concentrations studied. However, in contrast with earlier local structure studies its magnitude is not constant, but decreases continuously with increasing Ca content. This observation is at odds with a simple small-polaron picture for the insulating state.
