Spherically symmetric density and potential of a hydrogen molecule

Using a hydrogen molecule as a test system we demonstrate how to compute the effective potential according to the formalism of the new density functional theory (DFT), in which the basic variable is the set of spherically averaged densities instead of the total density, used in the traditional DFT. The effective potential together the external potential, nuclear Coulomb potential, can be substituted in the Schrödinger like differential equation to obtain the spherically averaged electron density of the system. In the new method instead of one three-dimensional low symmetry equation one has to solve as many spherically symmetric equations as there are atoms in the system.

Are we van der Waals ready?

We apply a range of density-functional-theory-based methods capable of describing van der Waals interactions to weakly bonded layered solids in order to investigate their accuracy for extended systems. The methods under investigation are the local density approximation, semi-empirical force fields, non-local van der Waals density functionals and the random-phase approximation. We investigate the equilibrium geometries, elastic constants and the binding energies of a large and diverse set of compounds and arrive at conclusions about the reliability of the different methods. The study also points to some directions of further development for the non-local van der Waals density functionals.

Van der Waals bonding in layered compounds from advanced first-principles calculations

Although the precise microscopic knowledge of van der Waals interactions is crucial for understanding bonding in weakly bonded layered compounds, very little quantitative information on the strength of interlayer interaction in these materials is available, either from experiments or simulations. Here, using many-body perturbation and advanced density-functional theory techniques, we calculate the interlayer binding and exfoliation energies for a large number of layered compounds and show that, independent of the electronic structure of the material, the energies for most systems are around 20 meV/Å$^2$. This universality explains the successful exfoliation of a wide class of layered materials to produce two-dimensional systems, and furthers our understanding the properties of layered compounds in general.

Charge self-consistent dynamical mean-field theory based on the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method: methodology and applications

Full charge self-consistence (CSC) over the electron density has been implemented into the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) scheme based on a full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method (FP-LMTO). Computational details on the construction of the electron density from the density matrix are provided. The method is tested on the prototypical charge-transfer insulator NiO using a simple static Hartree-Fock approximation as impurity solver. The spectral and ground state properties of bcc Fe are then addressed, by means of the spin-polarized T-matrix fluctuation exchange solver (SPTF). Finally the permanent magnet SmCo$_5$ is studied using multiple impurity solvers, SPTF and Hubbard I, as the strength of the local Coulomb interaction on the Sm and Co sites are drastically different. The developed CSC-DMFT method is shown to in general improve on materials properties like magnetic moments, electronic structure and the materials density.
