Study of radioactivity built-up and decay with singles time-stamped data

Time-stamped data have been used to estimate the decay half-lives of radioactive 118mSb and 64,66,68Ga nuclei. These nuclei are populated through the reaction 4He (Elab = 32 MeV) + nat In and p (Elab = 10 MeV) + natZn, respectively. The g -rays emitted by the excited daughter nuclei are detected by a single high purity germanium (HPGe) detector and the data are acquired using a CAEN 5780M desktop digitizer. Half-lives of different orders of magnitudes for the above mentioned nuclei are obtained from both the decay of parent and the growth of daughter nuclei. It is observed that the half-lives obtained from both these techniques match fairly well and also are consistent with the reported values. It is demonstrated that the time-stamped data can be useful while studying certain half-lives which are too long for measurement using in-beam electronic technique and too short for decay studies in off-beam methods. The data also have a special relevance for constant monitoring of beam current and beam-tuning.

Antimagnetic rotation and sudden change of electric quadrupole transition strength in 143Eu

Lifetimes of the states in the quadrupole structure in 143Eu have been measured using the Doppler shift attenuation method as well as parity of the states in the sequence has been firmly identified from polarization measurement using the Indian National Gamma Array. The decreasing trends of the deduced quadrupole transition strength B(E2) with spin, along with increasing J (2) /B(E2) values before band crossing, conclusively establish the origin of these states as arising out of antimagnetic rotation. The abrupt increase in the B(E2) values after the band crossing in the quadrupole band, a novel feature observed in the present experiment, may indicates the crossing of different shears configurations resulting in re-opening of shears structure. The results are well reproduced by numerical calculation within the framework of semi-classical geometric model.

Crossing of large multiquasiparticle magnetic-rotation bands in 198^{198}Bi

High-spin states in the doubly-odd 198^{198}Bi nucleus have been studied by using the 185,187^{185,187}Re(16^{16}O, xn) reactions at the beam energy of 112.5 MeV. γ−γγ-γ coincidence were measured by using the INGA array with 15 Compton suppressed clover HPGe detectors. The observed levels have been assigned definite spin-parity. The high spin structure is grouped into three bands (B1, B2 and B3), of which two (B1 and B2) exhibit the properties of magnetic rotation (MR). Tilted axis cranking calculations were carried out to explain the MR bands having large multi-quasiparticle configurations. The calculated results explain the bands B1 and B2 very nicely, confirming the shears mechanism and suggest a crossing of two MR bands in both the cases. The crossing is from 6-qp to 8-qp in band B1 and from 4-qp to 6-qp in band B2, a very rare finding. A semiclassical model has also been used to obtain the particle-hole interaction strengths for the bands B1 and B2, below the band crossing.

Measurement of ββ-decay end point energy with Planar HPGe detector

The end point energies of nuclear ββ decays have been measured with a segmented planar Ge LEPS detector using both singles and coincidence techniques. The β−γβ- γ coincidence has been performed with a segmented planar Ge LEPS and a single 10%\% HPGe detector. The γγ ray and ββ particle responses of the Segmented planer Ge LEPS detector were studied using monte carlo simulation code GEANT3. The experimentally obtained ββ spectrum was in reasonably good agreement with the simulation results. The experimental end point energies are determined with substantial accuracy for some of the known ββ decays in 106^{106}Rh, 210^{210}Bi and 90^{90}Y. The end point energies corresponding to three weak branches in 106^{106}Rh →\rightarrow 106^{106}Pd decay has been measured for the first time.

Role of p-induced population of medium mass(A ∼\sim 150) neutron rich nuclei

Excitation functions were measured by stacked-foil activation technique for the 150^{150}Nd(p, xpyn) reaction using 97.65% enriched 150^{150}Nd target. Measurement up to ∼\sim50% above barrier and down to 18% below the barrier was performed using proton beam energy (Ep_p) of 7 - 15 MeV from VECC Cyclotron. The yield of suitable γγ rays emitted following the decay of relevant evaporation residues was determined using a 50% High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector.(p,n) cross section was found to follow the expected trend with a maximum value of 63.7(4.9)mb at Ep_p ∼\sim 8.6 MeV. (p,2n) cross section gradually increased with Ep_p and had maximum contribution to the total reaction cross section after Ep_p ∼\sim 9.0 MeV. (p, p′^{\prime}n) reaction channel also showed a reasonable yield with a threshold of Ep_p ∼\sim 12.0 MeV. The experimental data were corroborated with statistical model calculations using different codes, viz., CASCADE, ALICE/91 and EMPIRE3.1. All the calculations using a suitable set of global parameters could reproduce the excitation function fairly well in the present energy range.

Band structures and intruder ππi13/2i_{13/2} state in 197^{197}Tl

The excited states in the odd-AA 197^{197}Tl nucleus have been studied by populating them using the 197^{197}Au(αα, 4nn)197^{197}Tl reaction at the beam energy of 48 MeV. The γ−γγ-γ coincidence data were taken using a combination of clover, LEPS and single crystal HPGe detectors. Precise spin and parity assignments of the excited states have been done through the polarization and the DCO measurements. A new band structure has been identified and the evidence for a possible intruder πi13/2πi_{13/2} state has been found for the first time. Possible configurations of the observed bands have been discussed. The total Routhian surface calculations have been performed to study the shape of 197^{197}Tl for different configurations.

Low lying spectroscopy of odd-odd 146^{146}Eu

Electron Capture (EC) decay of 146^{146}Gd(t1/2\it{t_{1/2}} = 48d) to the low lying states of 146^{146}Eu has been studied using high-resolution γγ ray spectroscopy. The 146^{146}Gd activity was produced by (αα, 2n) reaction at Eα_α = 32 MeV using 93.8% enriched 144^{144}Sm target. The level structure has been considerably modified from the measurement of γγ ray singles, γγγγ coincidences and decay half lives. Lifetime measurement has been performed for the 3−^- (114.06 keV) and 2−^- (229.4 keV) levels of 146^{146}Eu using Mirror Symmetric Centroid Difference (MSCD) method with LaBr3_3 (Ce) detectors. The lifetimes for these two states have been found to be 5.38 ±\pm 2.36 ps and 8.38 ±\pm 2.19 ps respectively. Shell model calculation has been performed using OXBASH code in order to interpret the results.

High spin band structures in doubly-odd 194^{194}Tl

The high-spin states in odd-odd 194^{194}Tl nucleus have been studied by populating them using the 185,187^{185,187}Re(13^{13}C, xn) reactions at 75 MeV of beam energy. γ−γγ-γ coincidence measurement has been performed using the INGA array with a digital data acquisition system to record the time stamped data. Definite spin-parity assignment of the levels was made from the DCO ratio and the IPDCO ratio measurements. The level scheme of 194^{194}Tl has been extended up to 4.1 MeV in excitation energy including 19 new gamma ray transitions. The πh9/2⊗νi13/2πh_{9/2} \otimes νi_{13/2} band, in the neighboring odd-odd Tl isotopes show very similar properties in both experimental observables and calculated shapes. Two new band structures, with 6-quasiparticle configuration, have been observed for the first time in 194^{194}Tl. One of these bands has the characteristics of a magnetic rotational band. The cranked shell model calculations, using a deformed Woods-Saxon potential, have been performed to obtain the total Routhian surfaces in order to study the shapes of the bands and the band crossing in 194^{194}Tl. The semiclassical formalism has been used to describe the magnetic rotational band.

Onset of deformation at N=112N = 112 in Bi nuclei

The high spin states in 195^{195}Bi has been studied by γγ-ray spectroscopic method using the 181^{181}Ta(20^{20}Ne, 6n) fusion evaporation reaction at 130 MeV. The γγγγ coincidence data were taken using an array of 8 clover HPGe detectors. The spin and parity assignments of the excited states have been made from the measured directional correlation from oriented states (DCO) ratios and integrated polarization asymmetry (IPDCO) ratios. The results show, for the first time, the evidence of a rotational like band based on a 13/2+^+ band head in this nucleus, indicating the onset of deformation at neutron number N=112N = 112 for the Bismuth isotopes. The results obtained were found to be consistent with the prediction of the total Routhian surface calculations using Woods Saxon potential. The same calculations also predict a change in shape from oblate to triaxial in 195^{195}Bi at high rotational frequency.
