Gaussian Happy Numbers

This paper extends the concept of a BB-happy number, for B≥2B \geq 2, from the rational integers, Z\mathbb{Z}, to the Gaussian integers, Z[i]\mathbb{Z}[i]. We investigate the fixed points and cycles of the Gaussian BB-happy functions, determining them for small values of BB and providing a method for computing them for any B≥2B \geq 2. We discuss heights of Gaussian BB-happy numbers, proving results concerning the smallest Gaussian BB-happy numbers of certain heights. Finally, we prove conditions for the existence and non-existence of arbitrarily long arithmetic sequences of Gaussian BB-happy numbers.

Augmented generalized happy functions

An augmented happy function, S[c,b]S_{[c,b]} maps a positive integer to the sum of the squares of its base-bb digits and a non-negative integer cc. A positive integer uu is in a cycle of S[c,b]S_{[c,b]} if, for some positive integer kk, S[c,b]k(u)=uS_{[c,b]}^k(u) = u and for positive integers vv and ww, vv is ww-attracted for S[c,b]S_{[c,b]} if, for some non-negative integer ℓ\ell, S[c,b]ℓ(v)=wS_{[c,b]}^\ell(v) = w. In this paper, we prove that for each c≥0c\geq 0 and b≥2b \geq 2, and for any uu in a cycle of S[c,b]S_{[c,b]}, (1) if bb is even, then there exist arbitrarily long sequences of consecutive uu-attracted integers and (2) if bb is odd, then there exist arbitrarily long sequences of 2-consecutive uu-attracted integers.

Fixed Points of Augmented Generalized Happy Functions

An augmented generalized happy function S[c,b]S_{[c,b]} maps a positive integer to the sum of the squares of its base bb digits plus cc. In this paper, we study various properties of the fixed points of S[c,b]S_{[c,b]}; count the number of fixed points of §[c,b]§_{[c,b]}, for b≥2b \geq 2 and 0<c<3b−30<c<3b-3; and prove that, for each b≥2b \geq 2, there exist arbitrarily many consecutive values of cc for which S[c,b]S_{[c,b]} has no fixed point.
