Augmented generalized happy functions

An augmented happy function, $S_{[c,b]}$ maps a positive integer to the sum of the squares of its base-$b$ digits and a non-negative integer $c$. A positive integer $u$ is in a cycle of $S_{[c,b]}$ if, for some positive integer $k$, $S_{[c,b]}^k(u) = u$ and for positive integers $v$ and $w$, $v$ is $w$-attracted for $S_{[c,b]}$ if, for some non-negative integer $\ell$, $S_{[c,b]}^\ell(v) = w$. In this paper, we prove that for each $c\geq 0$ and $b \geq 2$, and for any $u$ in a cycle of $S_{[c,b]}$, (1) if $b$ is even, then there exist arbitrarily long sequences of consecutive $u$-attracted integers and (2) if $b$ is odd, then there exist arbitrarily long sequences of 2-consecutive $u$-attracted integers.

Fixed Points of Augmented Generalized Happy Functions

An augmented generalized happy function $S_{[c,b]}$ maps a positive integer to the sum of the squares of its base $b$ digits plus $c$. In this paper, we study various properties of the fixed points of $S_{[c,b]}$; count the number of fixed points of $§_{[c,b]}$, for $b \geq 2$ and $0<c<3b-3$; and prove that, for each $b \geq 2$, there exist arbitrarily many consecutive values of $c$ for which $S_{[c,b]}$ has no fixed point.

A somewhat gentle introduction to differential graded commutative algebra

Differential graded (DG) commutative algebra provides powerful techniques for proving theorems about modules over commutative rings. These notes are a somewhat colloquial introduction to these techniques. In order to provide some motivation for commutative algebraists who are wondering about the benefits of learning and using these techniques, we present them in the context of a recent result of Nasseh and Sather-Wagstaff. These notes were used for the course "Differential Graded Commutative Algebra" that was part of the Workshop on Connections Between Algebra and Geometry held at the University of Regina, May 29--June 1, 2012.

Krull Dimension for Differential Graded Algebras

We introduce a naive notion of a system of parameters for a homologically finite complex over a commutative noetherian local ring, and compare it to the system of parameters defined by Christensen. We show that these notions differ in general, but that they agree when the complex in question is a DG R-algebra. In this case we also show that the Krull dimension defined in terms of the lengths of such systems of parameters agrees with Krull dimensions defined in terms of certain chains of prime ideals.

On the Image of the Totaling Functor

Let $A$ be a DG algebra with a trivial differential over a commutative unital ring. This paper investigates the image of the totaling functor, defined from the category of complexes of graded $A$-modules to the category of DG $A$-modules. Specifically, we exhibit a special class of semifree DG $A$-modules which can always be expressed as the totaling of some complex of graded free $A$-modules. As a corollary, we also provide results concerning the image of the totaling functor when $A$ is a polynomial ring over a field.

Eventually linear partially complete resolutions over a local ring with $m^4=0$

We classify the Hilbert polynomial of a local ring $(R,m)$ satisfying $m^4=0$ which admits an eventually linear doubly-infinite resolution $C$ which is 'partially' complete --- that is, for which the cohomology of $Hom_R(C,R)$ eventually vanishes. As a corollary to our main result, we show that an $m^4=0$ local ring can admit certain classes of asymmetric partially complete resolutions only if its Hilbert polynomial is symmetric. Moreover, we show that the Betti sequence associated to an eventually linear partially complete resolution over an $m^4=0$ local ring cannot be periodic of period two or three.

Asymptotic behavior of dimensions of syzygies

Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring, and M a finitely generated R-module of infinite projective dimension. It is well-known that the depths of the syzygy modules of M eventually stabilize to the depth of R. In this paper, we investigate the conditions under which a similar statement can be made regarding dimension. In particular, we show that if R is equidimensional and the Betti numbers of M are eventually non-decreasing, then the dimension of any sufficiently high syzygy module of M coincides with the dimension of R.
