Rational CFT With Three Characters: The Quasi-Character Approach

Quasi-characters are vector-valued modular functions having an integral, but not necessarily positive, q-expansion. Using modular differential equations, a complete classification has been provided in arXiv:1810.09472 for the case of two characters. These in turn generate all possible admissible characters, of arbitrary Wronskian index, in order two. Here we initiate a study of the three-character case. We conjecture several infinite families of quasi-characters and show in examples that their linear combinations an generate admissible characters with arbitrarily large Wronskian index. The structure is completely different from the order two case, and the novel coset construction of arXiv:1602.01022 plays a key role in discovering the appropriate families. Using even unimodular lattices, we construct some explicit three-character CFT corresponding to the new admissible characters.

Universal Correlators and Novel Cosets in 2d RCFT

The two-character level-1 WZW models corresponding to Lie algebras in the Cvitanović-Deligne series $A_1,A_2,G_2,D_4,F_4,E_6,E_7$ have been argued to form coset pairs with respect to the meromorphic $E_{8,1}$ CFT. Evidence for this has taken the form of holomorphic bilinear relations between the characters. We propose that suitable 4-point functions of primaries in these models also obey bilinear relations that combine them into current correlators for $E_{8,1}$, and provide strong evidence that these relations hold in each case. Different cases work out due to special identities involving tensor invariants of the algebra or hypergeometric functions. In particular these results verify previous calculations of correlators for exceptional WZW models, which have rather subtle features. We also find evidence that the intermediate vertex operator algebras A$_{0.5}$ and E$_{7.5}$, as well as the three-character A$_{4,1}$ theory, also appear to satisfy the novel coset relation.

Universal RCFT Correlators from the Holomorphic Bootstrap

We elaborate and extend the method of Wronskian differential equations for conformal blocks to compute four-point correlation functions on the plane for classes of primary fields in rational (and possibly more general) conformal field theories. This approach leads to universal differential equations for families of CFT's and provides a very simple re-derivation of the BPZ results for the degenerate fields $ϕ_{1,2}$ and $ϕ_{2,1}$ in the c < 1 minimal models. We apply this technique to compute correlators for the WZW models corresponding to the Deligne-Cvitanović exceptional series of Lie algebras. The application turns out to be subtle in certain cases where there are multiple decoupled primaries. The power of this approach is demonstrated by applying it to compute four-point functions for the Baby Monster CFT, which does not belong to any minimal series.

Contour Integrals and the Modular S-Matrix

We investigate a conjecture to describe the characters of large families of RCFT's in terms of contour integrals of Feigin-Fuchs type. We provide a simple algorithm to determine the modular S-matrix for arbitrary numbers of characters as a sum over paths. Thereafter we focus on the case of 2, 3 and 4 characters, where agreement between the critical exponents of the integrals and the characters implies that the conjecture is true. In these cases, we compute the modular S-matrix explicitly, verify that it agrees with expectations for known theories, and use it to compute degeneracies and multiplicities of primaries. We also compute S in an 8-character example to provide additional evidence for the original conjecture. On the way we note that the Verlinde formula provides interesting constraints on the critical exponents of RCFT in this context.

Extended Supersymmetric BMS$_3$ algebras and Their Free Field Realisations

We study $N=(2,4,8)$ supersymmetric extensions of the three dimensional BMS algebra (BMS$_3$) with most generic possible central extensions. We find that $N$-extended supersymmetric BMS$_3$ algebras can be derived by a suitable contraction of two copies of the extended superconformal algebras. Extended algebras from all the consistent contractions are obtained by scaling left-moving and right-moving supersymmetry generators symmetrically, while Virasoro and R-symmetry generators are scaled asymmetrically. On the way, we find that the BMS/GCA correspondence does not in general hold for supersymmetric systems. Using the $β$-$γ$ and the ${\mathfrak b}$-${\mathfrak c}$ systems, we construct free field realisations of all the extended super-BMS$_3$ algebras.

preprint2016arXiv

Free-field realisations of the BMS$_3$ algebra and its extensions

We construct an explicit realisation of the BMS$_3$ algebra with nonzero central charges using holomorphic free fields. This can be extended by the addition of chiral matter to a realisation having arbitrary values for the two independent central charges. Via the introduction of additional free fields, we extend our construction to the minimally supersymmetric BMS$_3$ algebra and to the nonlinear higher-spin BMS$_3$-W$_3$ algebra. We also describe an extended system that realises both the SU(2) current algebra as well as BMS$_3$ via the Wakimoto representation, though in this case introducing a central extension also brings in new non-central operators.

Two-dimensional RCFT's without Kac-Moody symmetry

Using the method of modular-invariant differential equations, we classify a family of Rational Conformal Field Theories with two and three characters having no Kac-Moody algebra. In addition to unitary and non-unitary minimal models, we find "dual" theories whose characters obey bilinear relations with those of the minimal models to give the Moonshine Module. In some ways this relation is analogous to cosets of meromorphic CFT's. The theory dual in this sense to the Ising model has central charge 47/2 and is related to the Baby Monster Module.

Modular invariance and entanglement entropy

We study the Renyi and entanglement entropies for free 2d CFT's at finite temperature and finite size, with emphasis on their properties under modular transformations of the torus. We address the issue of summing over fermion spin structures in the replica trick, and show that the relation between entanglement and thermal entropy determines two different ways to perform this sum in the limits of small and large interval. Both answers are modular covariant, rather than invariant. Our results are compared with those for a free boson at unit radius in the two limits and complete agreement is found, supporting the view that entanglement respects Bose-Fermi duality. We extend our computations to multiple free Dirac fermions having correlated spin structures, dual to free bosons on the Spin(2d) weight lattice.

On 2d Conformal Field Theories with Two Characters

Rational CFT's are classified by an integer $\ell$, the number of zeroes of the Wronskian of their characters in moduli space. For $\ell=0$ they satisfy non-singular modular-invariant differential equations, while for $\ell>0$ the corresponding equations have singularities. We survey CFT's with two characters and $\ell=0,2,3,4$ and verify the consistency, at the level of characters, of some candidate theories with $\ell\ne 0$. For $\ell=2$ there are seven consistents sets of characters. We identify specific combinations of level-1 current algebras that are potential symmetries of the corresponding CFT's.

Multiple Membranes in M-theory

We review developments in the theory of multiple, parallel membranes in M-theory. After discussing the inherent difficulties pertaining to a maximally supersymmetric lagrangian formulation with the appropriate field content and symmetries, we discuss how introducing the concept of 3-algebras allows for such a description. Different choices of 3-algebras lead to distinct classes of 2+1 dimensional theories with varying degrees of supersymmetry. We then describe how these are equivalent to a type of conventional superconformal Chern-Simons gauge theories at level k, coupled to bifundamental matter. Analysing the physical properties of these theories leads to the identification of a certain subclass of models with configurations of M2-branes in Z_k orbifolds of M-theory. In addition these models give rise to a whole new sector of the gauge/gravity duality in the form of an AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence. We also discuss mass deformations, higher derivative corrections as well as the possibility of extracting information about M5-brane physics.

Unravelling the novel Higgs mechanism in (2+1)d Chern-Simons theories

Chern-Simons gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions with multiple gauge fields exhibit novel properties that are analysed here in some detail. A striking feature is the possibility of a non-propagating Chern-Simons field acquiring a massless propagating mode via a Higgs mechanism. This novel Higgs mechanism, originally discovered in the context of M-theory, is studied here without reference to M-theory or supersymmetry. It is revealed as a variant of topological mass generation and shown to arise only when Chern-Simons and mass matrices are not simultaneously diagonalisable. Sufficient conditions are found for it to occur. It is speculated that some analogue of the NHM could occur in theories of condensed-matter systems similar to those exhibiting the fractional quantum Hall effect, as well as in 2+1 dimensional gravity.

Developments in high energy theory

This non-technical review article is aimed at readers with some physics background, including beginning research students. It provides a panoramic view of the main theoretical developments in high energy physics since its inception more than half a century ago, a period in which experiments have spanned an enormous range of energies, theories have been developed leading up to the Standard Model, and proposals -- including the radical paradigm of String Theory -- have been made to go beyond the Standard Model. The list of references provided here is not intended to properly credit all original work but rather to supply the reader with a few pointers to the literature, specifically highlighting work done by Indian authors.

Noncritical-Topological Correspondence: Disc Amplitudes and Noncompact Branes

We examine the duality between type 0 noncritical strings and topological B-model strings, with special emphasis on the flux dependence. The former theory is known to exhibit holomorphic factorisation upto a subtle flux-dependent disc term. We give a precise definition of the B-model dual and propose that it includes both compact and noncompact B-branes. The former give the factorised part of the free energy, while the latter violate holomorphic factorisation and contribute the desired disc term. These observations are generalised to rational radii, for which we derive a nonperturbatively exact result. We also show that our picture extends to a proposed alternative topological-anti-topological picture of the correspondence for type 0 strings.

FZZ Algebra

The duality between the Sine-Liouville conformal field theory and the two dimensional black hole is revisited by considering the two possible Sine-Liouville dressings together. We show that this choice is consistent with the structure of correlation functions, and that the OPE of the two dressings yields the black hole deformation operator. As an application of this approach, we investigate the role of higher winding perturbations in the context of c=1 strings, where we argue that they are related to higher-spin discrete states that generalize the 2d black hole operator.

Gauge-Invariant Couplings of Noncommutative Branes to Ramond-Ramond Backgrounds

We derive the couplings of noncommutative D-branes to spatially varying Ramond-Ramond fields, extending our earlier results in hep-th/0009101. These couplings are expressed in terms of *n products of operators involving open Wilson lines. Equivalence of the noncommutative to the commutative couplings implies interesting identities as well as an expression for the Seiberg-Witten map that was previously conjectured. We generalise our couplings to include transverse scalars, thereby obtaining a Seiberg-Witten map relating commutative and noncommutative descriptions of these scalars. RR couplings for unstable non-BPS branes are also proposed.

A Stable Non-BPS Configuration From Intersecting Branes and Antibranes

We describe a tachyon-free stable non-BPS brane configuration in type IIA string theory. The configuration is an elliptic model involving rotated NS5 branes, D4 branes and anti-D4 branes, and is dual to a fractional brane-antibrane pair placed at a conifold singularity. This configuration exhibits an interesting behaviour as we vary the radius of the compact direction. Below a critical radius the D4 and anti-D4 branes are aligned, but as the radius increases above the critical value the potential between them develops a minimum away from zero. This signals a phase transition to a configuration with finitely separated branes.

Understanding Fields Using Strings: A Review for Particle Physicists

In addition to being a prime candidate for a fundamental unified theory of all interactions in nature, string theory provides a natural setting to understand gauge field theories. This is linked to the concept of "D-branes": extended, solitonic excitations of string theory which can be studied using techniques of string theory and which support gauge fields localized along their world-volumes. It follows that the techniques of string theory can be very useful even for those particle physicists who are not specifically interested in unification and/or quantum gravity. In this talk I attempt to review how strings help us to understand fields. The discussion is restricted to 3+1 spacetime dimensions.

Dualities and the SL(2,Z) Anomaly

The SL(2,Z) anomaly recently derived for type IIB supergravity in 10 dimensions is shown to be a consequence of T-duality with the type IIA string, after compactification to 2 dimensions on an 8-fold. This explains the identity of the gravitational 8-forms appearing in different contexts in the effective actions of type IIA and IIB string theories. In this framework, constraints on the compactification manifold arise from modular invariance of the 2d theory. Related issues in 6 dimensions are examined, and it is argued that similar anomalies are present on the worldvolumes of M-theory 5-branes and orientifold 5-planes.

A Note on Low-Dimensional String Compactifications

We study supersymmetric compactifications of type II strings on eightfolds to two dimensions. It is demonstrated that the type IIB string on an eightfold is free of gravitational anomalies. T-duality requires that this theory when further compactified on a circle must have a vacuum momentum; this is explicitly shown to be present and to have the right value. A subtlety in the relation of IIB compactifications and M-Theory orientifolds to two dimensions is pointed out.

F-Theory at Constant Coupling

The subspace of the moduli space of F-theory on K3 over which the coupling remains constant develops new branches at special values of this coupling. These values correspond to fixed points under the SL(2,Z) duality group of the type IIB string. The branches contain points where K3 degenerates to orbifolds of the four-torus by Z_3,Z_4 and Z_6. A singularity analysis shows that exceptional group symmetries appear on these branches, including pure E_8 xE_8, although SO(32) cannot be realised in this way. The orbifold points can be mapped to a kind of non-perturbative generalization of a IIB orientifold, and to M-theory orbifolds with non-trivial action on 2-brane wrapping modes.

Perturbation of the Ground Varieties of C = 1 String Theory

We discuss the effect of perturbations on the ground rings of $c=1$ string theory at the various compactification radii defining the $A_N$ points of the moduli space. We argue that perturbations by plus-type moduli define ground varieties which are equivalent to the unperturbed ones under redefinitions of the coordinates and hence cannot smoothen the singularity. Perturbations by the minus-type moduli, on the other hand, lead to semi-universal deformations of the singular varieties that can smoothen the singularity under certain conditions. To first order, the cosmological perturbation by itself can remove the singularity only at the self-dual ($A_1$) point.}

Topological Landau-Ginzburg Model of Two-Dimensional String Theory

We study a topological Landau-Ginzburg model with superpotential W(X)=X^{-1}. This is argued to be equivalent to c=1 string theory compactified at the self-dual radius. We compute the tree-level correlation function of N tachyons in this theory and show their agreement with matrix-model results. We also discuss the nature of contact terms, the perturbed superpotential and the flow of operators in the small phase space. The role of gravitational descendants in this theory is examined, and the tachyon two-point function in genus 1 is obtained using a conjectured modification of the gravitational recursion relations.
