Technical Report: Development of an Ultrahigh Bandwidth Software-defined Radio Platform

For the development of new digital signal processing systems and services, the rapid, easy, and convenient prototyping of ideas and the rapid time-to-market of products are becoming important with advances in technology. Conventionally, for the development stage, particularly when confirming the feasibility or performance of a new system or service, an idea is first confirmed through a computerbased software simulation after developing an accurate model of the operating environment. Next, this idea is validated and tested in the real operating environment. The new systems or services and their operating environments are becoming increasingly complicated. Hence, their development processes too are more complex cost- and time-intensive tasks that require engineers with skill and professional knowledge/experience. Furthermore, for ensuring fast time-to-market, all the development processes encompassing the (i) algorithm development, (ii) product prototyping, and (iii) final product development, must be closely linked such that they can be quickly completed. In this context, the aim of this paper is to propose an ultrahigh bandwidth software-defined radio platform that can prototype a quasi-real-time operating system without a developer having sophisticated hardware/software expertise. This platform allows the realization of a software-implemented digital signal processing system in minimal time with minimal efforts and without the need of a host computer.

Opportunistic Multiuser Two-Way Amplify-and-Forward Relaying with a Multi Antenna Relay

We consider the opportunistic multiuser diversity in the multiuser two-way amplify-and-forward (AF) relay channel. The relay, equipped with multiple antennas and a simple zero-forcing beam-forming scheme, selects a set of two way relaying user pairs to enhance the degree of freedom (DoF) and consequently the sum throughput of the system. The proposed channel aligned pair scheduling (CAPS) algorithm reduces the inter-pair interference and keeps the signal to interference plus noise power ratio (SINR) of user pairs relatively interference free in average sense when the number of user pairs become very large. For ideal situations, where the number of user pairs grows faster than the system signal to noise ratio (SNR), the DoF of $M$ per channel use can be achieved when $M$ is the relay antenna size. With a limited number of pairs, the system is overloaded and the sum rates saturate at high signal to noise ratio (SNR) though modifications of CAPS can improve the performance to a certain amount. The performance of CAPS can be further enhanced by semi-orthogonal channel aligned pair scheduling (SCAPS) algorithm, which not only aligns the pair channels but also forms semi-orthogonal inter-pair channels. Simulation results show that we provide a set of approaches based on (S)CAPS and modified (S)CAPS, which provides system performance benefit depending on the SNR and the number of user pairs in the network.

Technical Report: Finger Replacement Schemes for RAKE Receivers in the Soft Handover Region with Multiple BSs over I.N.D. Fading Channels

A new finger replacement technique which is applicable for RAKE receivers in the soft handover (SHO) region has been proposed and studied in [1], [2] under the ideal assumption that the fading is both independent and identically distributed from path to path. To supplement our previous work, we present a general comprehensive framework for the performance assessment of the proposed finger replacement schemes operating over independent and non-identically distributed (i.n.d.) faded paths. To accomplish this object, we derive new closed-form expressions for the target key statistics which are composed of i.n.d. exponential random variables. With these new expressions, the performance analysis of various wireless communication systems over more practical environments can be possible.

Technical Report: A New Multi-Device Wireless Power Transfer Scheme Using an Intermediate Energy Storage Circuit

A new multi-device wireless power transfer scheme that reduces the overall charging time is presented. The proposed scheme employs the intermediated energy storage (IES) circuit which consists of a constant power driving circuit and a super-capacitor. By utilizing the characteristic of high power density of the super-capacitor, the receiver can receive and store the energy in short duration and supply to the battery for long time. This enables the overlap of charging duration between all receivers. As a result, the overall charging time can be reduced.

Technical Report: An MGF-based Unified Framework to Determine the Joint Statistics of Partial Sums of Ordered i.n.d. Random Variables

The joint statistics of partial sums of ordered random variables (RVs) are often needed for the accurate performance characterization of a wide variety of wireless communication systems. A unified analytical framework to determine the joint statistics of partial sums of ordered independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables was recently presented. However, the identical distribution assumption may not be valid in several real-world applications. With this motivation in mind, we consider in this paper the more general case in which the random variables are independent but not necessarily identically distributed (i.n.d.). More specifically, we extend the previous analysis and introduce a new more general unified analytical framework to determine the joint statistics of partial sums of ordered i.n.d. RVs. Our mathematical formalism is illustrated with an application on the exact performance analysis of the capture probability of generalized selection combining (GSC)-based RAKE receivers operating over frequency-selective fading channels with a non-uniform power delay profile. We also discussed a couple of other sample applications of the generic results presented in this work.

An MGF-based Unified Framework to Determine the Joint Statistics of Partial Sums of Ordered Random Variables

Order statistics find applications in various areas of communications and signal processing. In this paper, we introduce an unified analytical framework to determine the joint statistics of partial sums of ordered random variables (RVs). With the proposed approach, we can systematically derive the joint statistics of any partial sums of ordered statistics, in terms of the moment generating function (MGF) and the probability density function (PDF). Our MGF-based approach applies not only when all the K ordered RVs are involved but also when only the Ks (Ks < K) best RVs are considered. In addition, we present the closed-form expressions for the exponential RV special case. These results apply to the performance analysis of various wireless communication systems over fading channels.
