Low-Complexity QoS-Aware Coordinated Scheduling for Heterogenous Networks

In this paper, we consider a heterogenous network (HetNet), where low-power indoor femtocells are deployed in the coverage area of the existing macro base station (MBS). This paper proposes a novel coordinated random beamforming and user scheduling strategy to improve the throughput of users served by the femtocell access point (FAP) while satisfying the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of users served by both MBS and FAP. The strategy, termed as QoS-Aware Coodinated Scheduling (QACS), requires limited coordination between the MBS and FAP, i.e., only the indexes of the qualified beams are shared. Exact statistical analysis for the ergodic achievable rate of both FAP and MBS with the proposed strategy are presented. Scheduling fairness is also addressed for the proposed QACS.

Delay Reduction in Multi-Hop Device-to-Device Communication using Network Coding

This paper considers the problem of reducing the broadcast decoding delay of wireless networks using instantly decodable network coding (IDNC) based device-to-device (D2D) communications. In a D2D configuration, devices in the network can help hasten the recovery of the lost packets of other devices in their transmission range by sending network coded packets. Unlike previous works that assumed fully connected network, this paper proposes a partially connected configuration in which the decision should be made not only on the packet combinations but also on the set of transmitting devices. First, the different events occurring at each device are identified so as to derive an expression for the probability distribution of the decoding delay. The joint optimization problem over the set of transmitting devices and the packet combinations of each is, then, formulated. The optimal solution of the joint optimization problem is derived using a graph theory approach by introducing the cooperation graph and reformulating the problem as a maximum weight clique problem in which the weight of each vertex is the contribution of the device identified by the vertex. Through extensive simulations, the decoding delay experienced by all devices in the Point to Multi-Point (PMP) configuration, the fully connected D2D (FC-D2D) configuration and the more practical partially connected D2D (PC-D2D) configuration are compared. Numerical results suggest that the PC-D2D outperforms the FC-D2D and provides appreciable gain especially for poorly connected networks.

Extended Delivery Time Analysis for Cognitive Packet Transmission with Application to Secondary Queuing Analysis

Cognitive radio transceiver can opportunistically access the underutilized spectrum resource of primary systems for new wireless services. With interleave implementation, the secondary transmission may be interrupted by the primary user's transmission. To facilitate the delay analysis of such secondary transmission for a fixed-size secondary packet, we study the resulting extended delivery time that includes both transmission time and waiting time. In particular, we derive the exact distribution function of extended delivery time of secondary transmission for both continuous sensing and periodic sensing cases. Selected numerical and simulation results are presented for illustrating the mathematical formulation. Finally, we consider a generalized M/G/1 queue set-up at the secondary user and formulate the closed-form expressions for the expected delay with Poisson traffic. The analytical results will greatly facilitate the design of the secondary system for particular target application.

Extended Delivery Time Analysis for Non-work-preserving Packet Transmission in Cognitive Environment

Cognitive radio transceiver can opportunistically access the underutilized spectrum resource of primary systems for new wireless services. With interweave cognitive implementation, the secondary transmission may be interrupted by the primary user's transmission. To facilitate the packet delay analysis of such secondary transmission, we study the resulting extended delivery time that includes both transmission time and waiting time. In particular, we derive the exact distribution function of extended delivery time of a fixed-size secondary packet with non-work-preserving strategy i.e. interrupted packets will be retransmitted. Both continuous sensing and periodic sensing with and without missed detection cases are considered. Selected numerical and simulation results are presented for verifying the mathematical formulation. Finally, we apply the results to secondary queuing analysis with a generalized M/G/1 queue set-up. The analytical results will greatly facilitate the design of the secondary system for particular target application.

Generalized Area Spectral Efficiency: An Effective Performance Metric for Green Wireless Communications

Area spectral efficiency (ASE) was introduced as a metric to quantify the spectral utilization efficiency of cellular systems. Unlike other performance metrics, ASE takes into account the spatial property of cellular systems. In this paper, we generalize the concept of ASE to study arbitrary wireless transmissions. Specifically, we introduce the notion of affected area to characterize the spatial property of arbitrary wireless transmissions. Based on the definition of affected area, we define the performance metric, generalized area spectral efficiency (GASE), to quantify the spatial spectral utilization efficiency as well as the greenness of wireless transmissions. After illustrating its evaluation for point-to-point transmission, we analyze the GASE performance of several different transmission scenarios, including dual-hop relay transmission, three-node cooperative relay transmission and underlay cognitive radio transmission. We derive closed-form expressions for the GASE metric of each transmission scenario under Rayleigh fading environment whenever possible. Through mathematical analysis and numerical examples, we show that the GASE metric provides a new perspective on the design and optimization of wireless transmissions, especially on the transmitting power selection. We also show that introducing relay nodes can greatly improve the spatial utilization efficiency of wireless systems. We illustrate that the GASE metric can help optimize the deployment of underlay cognitive radio systems.

Improved Performance of RF Energy Powered Wireless Sensor Node with Cooperative Beam Selection

RF energy harvesting is a promising potential solution to provide convenient and perpetual energy supplies to low-power wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we investigate the energy harvesting performance of a wireless sensor node powered by harvesting RF energy from existing multiuser MIMO system. Specifically, we propose a random unitary beamforming (RUB) based cooperative beam selection scheme to enhance the energy harvesting performance at the sensor. Under a constant total transmission power constraint, the multiuser MIMO system tries to select a maximal number of active beams for data transmission, while satisfying the energy harvesting requirement at the sensor. We derive the exact closed-form expression for the distribution function of harvested energy in a coherence time over Rayleigh fading channels. We further investigate the performance tradeoff of the average harvested energy at the sensor versus the sum-rate of the multiuser MIMO system.

Transmit Antenna Selection in Underlay Cognitive Radio Environment

Cognitive radio (CR) technology addresses the problem of spectrum under-utilization. In underlay CR mode, the secondary users are allowed to communicate provided that their transmission is not detrimental to primary user communication. Transmit antenna selection is one of the low-complexity methods to increase the capacity of wireless communication systems. In this article, we propose and analyze the performance benefit of a transmit antenna selection scheme for underlay secondary system that ensures the instantaneous interference caused by the secondary transmitter to the primary receiver is below a predetermined level. Closed-form expressions of the outage probability, amount of fading, and ergodic capacity for the secondary network are derived. Monte-carlo simulations are also carried out to confirm various mathematical results presented in this article.

Technical Report: An MGF-based Unified Framework to Determine the Joint Statistics of Partial Sums of Ordered i.n.d. Random Variables

The joint statistics of partial sums of ordered random variables (RVs) are often needed for the accurate performance characterization of a wide variety of wireless communication systems. A unified analytical framework to determine the joint statistics of partial sums of ordered independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables was recently presented. However, the identical distribution assumption may not be valid in several real-world applications. With this motivation in mind, we consider in this paper the more general case in which the random variables are independent but not necessarily identically distributed (i.n.d.). More specifically, we extend the previous analysis and introduce a new more general unified analytical framework to determine the joint statistics of partial sums of ordered i.n.d. RVs. Our mathematical formalism is illustrated with an application on the exact performance analysis of the capture probability of generalized selection combining (GSC)-based RAKE receivers operating over frequency-selective fading channels with a non-uniform power delay profile. We also discussed a couple of other sample applications of the generic results presented in this work.

Accurate Performance Analysis of Opportunistic Decode-and-Forward Relaying

In this paper, we investigate an opportunistic relaying scheme where the selected relay assists the source-destination (direct) communication. In our study, we consider a regenerative opportunistic relaying scheme in which the direct path can be considered unusable, and takes into account the effect of the possible erroneously detected and transmitted data at the best relay. We first derive statistics based on exact probability density function (PDF) of each hop. Then, the PDFs are used to determine accurate closed form expressions for end-to-end bit-error rate (BER) of binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation. Furthermore, we evaluate the asymptotical performance analysis and the diversity order is deduced. Finally, we validate our analysis by showing that performance simulation results coincide with our analytical results over different network architectures.

An MGF-based Unified Framework to Determine the Joint Statistics of Partial Sums of Ordered Random Variables

Order statistics find applications in various areas of communications and signal processing. In this paper, we introduce an unified analytical framework to determine the joint statistics of partial sums of ordered random variables (RVs). With the proposed approach, we can systematically derive the joint statistics of any partial sums of ordered statistics, in terms of the moment generating function (MGF) and the probability density function (PDF). Our MGF-based approach applies not only when all the K ordered RVs are involved but also when only the Ks (Ks < K) best RVs are considered. In addition, we present the closed-form expressions for the exponential RV special case. These results apply to the performance analysis of various wireless communication systems over fading channels.
