Generalized Synchronization of Coupled Chaotic Systems

In this paper we briefly report some recent developments on generalized synchronization. We discuss different methods of detecting generalized synchronization. We first consider two unidirectionally coupled systems and then two mutually coupled systems. We then extend the study to a network of coupled systems. In the study of generalized synchronization of coupled nonidentical systems we discuss the Master Stability Function (MSF) formalism for coupled nearly identical systems. Later we use this MSF to construct synchronized optimized networks. In the optimized networks the nodes which have parameter value at one extreme are chosen as hubs and the pair of nodes with larger difference in parameter are chosen to create links.

Synchronization of nearly-identical dynamical systems. I Size instability

We study the generalized synchronization and its stability using master stability function (MSF), in a network of coupled nearly identical dynamical systems. We extend the MSF approach for the case of degenerate eigenvalues of the coupling matrix. Using the MSF we study the size-instability in star and ring networks for coupled nearly identical dynamical systems. In the star network of coupled Rössler systems we show that the critical size beyond which synchronization is unstable, can be increased by having a larger frequency for the central node of the star. For the ring network we show that the critical size is not significantly affected by parameter variations. The results are verified by explicit numerical calculations.

Synchronization of nearly-identical dynamical systems. II Optimized networks

In this paper we use the master stability function (MSF) for nearly identical dynamical systems obtained in the previous paper to construct optimized networks (ONs) which show better synchronizability. Nearly identical nature is the result of having some node dependent parameters (NDPs) in the dynamics. We study the correlation between various network properties and the values of NDPs on different nodes for the optimized networks and compare them with random networks using the example of coupled Rössler systems. In an ON, the nodes with NDP values at one extreme, e.g. nodes with higher frequencies in coupled Rössler systems, have higher degrees and are chosen as hubs. These nodes also show higher betweenness centrality. The links in ON are preferably between nodes with large differences in NDP values. The ONs have in general higher clustering coefficient. We also study other network properties such as average shortest path, degree mixing etc. and their relation to the NDP in ON. We consider cases of both one and two NDPs and also directed networks.

Synchronization optimized networks for coupled nearly identical oscillators and their structural analysis

The extension of the master stability function (MSF) to analyze stability of generalized synchronization for coupled nearly identical oscillators is discussed. The nearly identical nature of the coupled oscillators comes from some parameter mismatch while the dynamical equations are the same for all the oscillators. From the stability criteria of the MSF, we construct optimal networks with better synchronization property, i. e. the synchronization is stable for widest possible range of coupling parameter. In the optimized networks the nodes with parameter value at one extreme are selected as hubs. The pair of nodes with larger parameter difference are preferred to create links in the optimized networks. And the optimized networks are found to be disassortative in nature, i. e. the nodes with high degree tend to connect with nodes with low degree.

Desynchronization bifurcation of coupled nonlinear dynamical systems

We analyze the desynchronization bifurcation in the coupled Rössler oscillators. After the bifurcation the coupled oscillators move away from each other with a square root dependence on the parameter. We define system transverse Lyapunov exponents and in the desynchronized state one is positive while the other is negative implying that one oscillator is trying to fly away while the other is holding it. We give a simple model of coupled integrable systems that shows a similar phenomena and can be treated as the normal form for the desynchronization bifurcation. We conclude that the desynchronization is a pitchfork bifurcation of the transverse manifold.

Synchronization of coupled nonidentical dynamical systems

We analyze the stability of synchronized state for coupled nearly identical dynamical systems on networks by deriving an approximate Master Stability Function (MSF). Using this MSF we treat the problem of designing a network having the best synchronizability properties. We find that the edges which connect nodes with a larger relative parameter mismatch are preferred and the nodes having values at one extreme of the parameter mismatch are preferred as hubs.
