Meromorphic projective structures, grafting and the monodromy map

A meromorphic projective structure on a punctured Riemann surface $X\setminus P$ is determined, after fixing a standard projective structure on $X$, by a meromorphic quadratic differential with poles of order three or more at each puncture in $P$. In this article we prove the analogue of Thurston's grafting theorem for such meromorphic projective structures, that involves grafting crowned hyperbolic surfaces. This also provides a grafting description for projective structures on $\mathbb{C}$ that have polynomial Schwarzian derivatives. As an application of our main result, we prove the analogue of a result of Hejhal, namely, we show that the monodromy map to the decorated character variety (in the sense of Fock-Goncharov) is a local homeomorphism.

Surface group representations in ${\rm SL}_2({\mathbb C})$ with finite mapping class orbits

Given an oriented surface of positive genus with finitely many punctures, we classify the finite orbits of the mapping class group action on the moduli space of semisimple complex special linear two dimensional representations of the fundamental group of the surface. For surfaces of genus at least two, such orbits correspond to homomorphisms with finite image. For genus one, they correspond to the finite or special dihedral representations. We also obtain an analogous result for bounded orbits in the moduli space.

Translation surfaces and periods of meromorphic differentials

Let $S$ be an oriented surface of genus $g$ and $n$ punctures. The periods of any meromorphic differential on $S$, with respect to a choice of complex structure, determine a representation $χ:Γ_{g,n} \to\mathbb C$ where $Γ_{g,n}$ is the first homology group of $S$. We characterize the representations that thus arise, that is, lie in the image of the period map $\textsf{Per}:Ω\mathcal{M}_{g,n}\to \textsf{Hom}(Γ_{g,n},\mathbb{C})$. This generalizes a classical result of Haupt in the holomorphic case. Moreover, we determine the image of this period map when restricted to any stratum of meromorphic differentials, having prescribed orders of zeros and poles. Our proofs are geometric, as they aim to construct a translation structure on $S$ with the prescribed holonomy $χ$. Along the way, we describe a connection with the Hurwitz problem concerning the existence of branched covers with prescribed branching data.

Dominating surface-group representations into $\mathrm{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{C})$ in the relative representation variety

Let $ρ$ be a representation of the fundamental group of a punctured surface into $\mathrm{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{C})$ that is not Fuchsian. We prove that there exists a Fuchsian representation that strictly dominates $ρ$ in the simple length spectrum, and preserves the boundary lengths. This extends a result of Gueritaud-Kassel-Wolff to the case of $\mathrm{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{C})$-representations. Our proof involves straightening the pleated plane in $\mathbb{H}^3$ determined by the Fock-Goncharov coordinates of a framed representation, and applying strip-deformations.

Quadratic differentials, measured foliations and metric graphs on punctured surfaces

A meromorphic quadratic differential on a punctured Riemann surface induces horizontal and vertical measured foliations with pole-singularities. In a neighborhood of a pole such a foliation comprises foliated strips and half-planes, and its leaf-space determines a metric graph. We introduce the notion of an asymptotic direction at each pole, and show that for a punctured surface equipped with a choice of such asymptotic data, any compatible pair of measured foliations uniquely determines a complex structure and a meromorphic quadratic differential realizing that pair. This proves the analogue of a theorem of Gardiner-Masur, for meromorphic quadratic differentials. We also prove an analogue of the Hubbard-Masur theorem, namely, for a fixed punctured Riemann surface there exists a meromorphic quadratic differential with any prescribed horizontal foliation, and such a differential is unique provided we prescribe the singular-flat geometry at the poles.

Meromorphic quadratic differentials and measured foliations on a Riemann surface

We describe the space of measured foliations induced on a compact Riemann surface by meromorphic quadratic differentials. We prove that any such foliation is realized by a unique such differential $q$ if we prescribe, in addition, the principal parts of $\sqrt q$ at the poles. This generalizes a theorem of Hubbard and Masur for holomorphic quadratic differentials. The proof analyzes infinite-energy harmonic maps from the Riemann surface to $\mathbb{R}$-trees of infinite co-diameter, with prescribed behavior at the poles.

Meromorphic quadratic differentials with complex residues and spiralling foliations

A meromorphic quadratic differential with poles of order two, on a compact Riemann surface, induces a measured foliation on the surface, with a spiralling structure at any pole that is determined by the complex residue of the differential at the pole. We introduce the space of such measured foliations, and prove that for a fixed Riemann surface, any such foliation is realized by a quadratic differential with second order poles at marked points. Furthermore, such a differential is uniquely determined if one prescribes complex residues at the poles that are compatible with the transverse measures around them. This generalizes a theorem of Hubbard and Masur concerning holomorphic quadratic differentials on closed surfaces, as well as a theorem of Strebel for the case when the foliation has only closed leaves. The proof involves taking a compact exhaustion of the surface, and considering a sequence of equivariant harmonic maps to real trees that do not have a uniform bound on total energy.

Quadratic differentials, half-plane structures, and harmonic maps to graphs

Let $(Σ,p)$ be a pointed Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 1$. For any integer $k\geq 1$, we parametrize the space of meromorphic quadratic differentials on $Σ$ with a pole of order $(k+2)$ at $p$, having a connected critical graph and an induced metric composed of $k$ Euclidean half-planes. The parameters form a finite-dimensional space $\mathcal{L} \cong \mathbb{R}^{k} \times S^1$ that describe a model singular-flat metric around the puncture with respect to a choice of coordinate chart. This generalizes an important theorem of Strebel, and associates, to each point in a decorated Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}_{g,1} \times \mathcal{L}$, a unique metric spine of the surface that is a ribbon-graph with $k$ infinite-length edges to $p$. The proofs study and relate the singular-flat geometry on the surface and the infinite-energy harmonic map from $Σ\setminus p$ to a $k$-pronged graph, whose Hopf differential is that quadratic differential.

Asymptoticity of grafting and Teichmüller rays I

We show that any grafting ray in Teichmüller space determined by an arational lamination or a multi-curve is (strongly) asymptotic to a Teichmüller geodesic ray. As a consequence the projection of a generic grafting ray to moduli space is dense. We also show that the set of points in Teichmüller space obtained by integer (2π-) graftings on any hyperbolic surface projects to a dense set, which implies that complex projective surfaces with any fixed Fuchsian holonomy are dense in moduli space.

Conformal limits of grafting and Teichmüller rays and their asymptoticity

We show that any grafting ray in Teichmüller space is (strongly) asymptotic to some Teichmüller geodesic ray. As an intermediate step we introduce surfaces that arise as limits of these degenerating Riemann surfaces. Given a grafting ray, the proof involves a Teichmüller ray with a conformally equivalent limit, and building quasiconformal maps of low dilatation between the surfaces along the rays. Our preceding work had proved the result for rays determined by an arational lamination or a multicurve, and the unified approach here gives an alternative proof of the former case.

Meromorphic quadratic differentials with half-plane structures

We prove the existence of "half-plane differentials" with prescribed local data on any Riemann surface. These are meromorphic quadratic differentials with higher-order poles which have an associated singular flat metric isometric to a collection of euclidean half-planes glued by an interval-exchange map on their boundaries. The local data is associated with the poles and consists of the integer order, a non-negative real residue, and a positive real leading order term. This generalizes a result of Strebel for differentials with double-order poles, and associates metric spines with the Riemann surface.

On the asymptotic behavior of complex earthquakes and Teichmüller disks

Given a hyperbolic surface and a simple closed geodesic on it, complex-twists along the curve produce a holomorphic family of deformations in Teichmüller space, degenerating to the Riemann surface where it is pinched. We show there is a corresponding Teichmüller disk such that the two are strongly asymptotic, in the Teichmüller metric, around the noded Riemann surface. We establish a similar comparison with plumbing deformations that open the node.

Curvatures on the Teichmüller curve

The Teichmüller curve is the fiber space over Teichmüller space of closed Riemann surfaces, where the fiber over a point in Teichmüller space is the underlying surface. We derive formulas for sectional curvatures on the Teichmüller curve. In particular, our method can be applied to investigate the geometry of the Weil-Petersson geodesic as a three-manifold, and the degeneration of the curvatures near the infinity of the augmented Teichmüller space along a Weil-Petersson geodesic, as well as the minimality of hyperbolic surfaces in this three-manifold.
