An Efficient Constant-Coefficient MSAV Scheme for Computing Vesicle Growth and Shrinkage

We present a fast, unconditionally energy-stable numerical scheme for simulating vesicle deformation under osmotic pressure using a phase-field approach. The model couples an Allen-Cahn equation for the biomembrane interface with a variable-mobility Cahn-Hilliard equation governing mass exchange across the membrane. Classical approaches, including nonlinear multigrid and Multiple Scalar Auxiliary Variable (MSAV) methods, require iterative solution of variable-coefficient systems at each time step, resulting in substantial computational cost. We introduce a constant-coefficient MSAV (CC-MSAV) scheme that incorporates stabilization directly into the Cahn-Hilliard evolution equation rather than the chemical potential. This reformulation yields fully decoupled constant-coefficient elliptic problems solvable via fast discrete cosine transform (DCT), eliminating iterative solvers entirely. The method achieves O(N^2 log N) complexity per time step while preserving unconditional energy stability and discrete mass conservation. Numerical experiments verify second-order temporal and spatial accuracy, mass conservation to relative errors below 5 x 10^-11, and close agreement with nonlinear multigrid benchmarks. On grids with N >= 2048, CC-MSAV achieves 6-15x overall speedup compared to classical MSAV with optimized preconditioning, while the dominant Cahn-Hilliard subsystem is accelerated by up to two orders of magnitude. These efficiency gains, achieved without sacrificing accuracy, make CC-MSAV particularly well suited for large-scale simulations of vesicle dynamics.

A second order accurate numerical method for the Poisson-Nernst-Planck system in the energetic variational formulation

A second order accurate (in time) numerical scheme is proposed and analyzed for the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equation (PNP) system, reformulated as a non-constant mobility $H^{-1}$ gradient flow in the Energetic Variational Approach (EnVarA). The centered finite difference is taken as the spatial discretization. Meanwhile, the highly nonlinear and singular nature of the logarithmic energy potentials has always been the essential difficulty to design a second order accurate scheme in time, while preserving the variational energetic structures. The mobility function is updated with a second order accurate extrapolation formula, for the sake of unique solvability. A modified Crank-Nicolson scheme is used to approximate the logarithmic term, so that its inner product with the discrete temporal derivative exactly gives the corresponding nonlinear energy difference; henceforth the energy stability is ensured for the logarithmic part. In addition, nonlinear artificial regularization terms are added in the numerical scheme, so that the positivity-preserving property could be theoretically proved, with the help of the singularity associated with the logarithmic function. Furthermore, an optimal rate convergence analysis is provided in this paper, in which the higher order asymptotic expansion for the numerical solution, the rough error estimate and refined error estimate techniques have to be included to accomplish such an analysis. This work combines the following theoretical properties for a second order accurate numerical scheme for the PNP system: (i) second order accuracy in both time and space, (ii) unique solvability and positivity, (iii) energy stability, and (iv) optimal rate convergence. A few numerical results are also presented.

Preconditioned accelerated gradient descent methods for locally Lipschitz smooth objectives with applications to the solution of nonlinear PDEs

We develop a theoretical foundation for the application of Nesterov's accelerated gradient descent method (AGD) to the approximation of solutions of a wide class of partial differential equations (PDEs). This is achieved by proving the existence of an invariant set and exponential convergence rates when its preconditioned version (PAGD) is applied to minimize locally Lipschitz smooth, strongly convex objective functionals. We introduce a second-order ordinary differential equation (ODE) with a preconditioner built-in and show that PAGD is an explicit time-discretization of this ODE, which requires a natural time step restriction for energy stability. At the continuous time level, we show an exponential convergence of the ODE solution to its steady state using a simple energy argument. At the discrete level, assuming the aforementioned step size restriction, the existence of an invariant set is proved and a matching exponential rate of convergence of the PAGD scheme is derived by mimicking the energy argument and the convergence at the continuous level. Applications of the PAGD method to numerical PDEs are demonstrated with certain nonlinear elliptic PDEs using pseudo-spectral methods for spatial discretization, and several numerical experiments are conducted. The results confirm the global geometric and mesh size-independent convergence of the PAGD method, with an accelerated rate that is improved over the preconditioned gradient descent (PGD) method.

A positivity-preserving, energy stable and convergent numerical scheme for the Poisson-Nernst-Planck system

In this paper we propose and analyze a finite difference numerical scheme for the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equation (PNP) system. To understand the energy structure of the PNP model, we make use of the Energetic Variational Approach (EnVarA), so that the PNP system could be reformulated as a non-constant mobility $H^{-1}$ gradient flow, with singular logarithmic energy potentials involved. To ensure the unique solvability and energy stability, the mobility function is explicitly treated, while both the logarithmic and the electric potential diffusion terms are treated implicitly, due to the convex nature of these two energy functional parts. The positivity-preserving property for both concentrations, $n$ and $p$, is established at a theoretical level. This is based on the subtle fact that the singular nature of the logarithmic term around the value of $0$ prevents the numerical solution reaching the singular value, so that the numerical scheme is always well-defined. In addition, an optimal rate convergence analysis is provided in this work, in which many highly non-standard estimates have to be involved, due to the nonlinear parabolic coefficients. The higher order asymptotic expansion (up to third order temporal accuracy and fourth order spatial accuracy), the rough error estimate (to establish the $\ell^\infty$ bound for $n$ and $p$), and the refined error estimate have to be carried out to accomplish such a convergence result. In our knowledge, this work will be the first to combine the following three theoretical properties for a numerical scheme for the PNP system: (i) unique solvability and positivity, (ii) energy stability, and (iii) optimal rate convergence. A few numerical results are also presented in this article, which demonstrates the robustness of the proposed numerical scheme.

A Second Order Energy Stable Scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard-Hele-Shaw Equations

We present a second-order-in-time finite difference scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard-Hele-Shaw equations. This numerical method is uniquely solvable and unconditionally energy stable. At each time step, this scheme leads to a system of nonlinear equations that can be efficiently solved by a nonlinear multigrid solver. Owing to the energy stability, we derive an $\ell^2 (0,T; H_h^3)$ stability of the numerical scheme. To overcome the difficulty associated with the convection term $\nabla \cdot (ϕ\boldsymbol{u})$, we perform an $\ell^\infty (0,T; H_h^1)$ error estimate instead of the classical $\ell^\infty (0,T; \ell^2)$ one to obtain the optimal rate convergence analysis. In addition, various numerical simulations are carried out, which demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed numerical scheme.

An Energy Stable Finite-Difference Scheme for Functionalized Cahn-Hilliard Equation and its Convergence Analysis

We present and analyze an unconditionally energy stable and convergent finite difference scheme for the Functionalized Cahn-Hilliard equation. One key difficulty associated with the energy stability is based on the fact that one nonlinear energy functional term in the expansion appears as non-convex, non-concave. To overcome this subtle difficulty, we add two auxiliary terms to make the combined term convex, which in turns yields a convex-concave decomposition of the physical energy. As a result, an application of the convex splitting methodology assures both the unique solvability and the unconditional energy stability of the proposed numerical scheme. To deal with a 4-Laplacian solver in an $H^{-1}$ gradient flow at each time step, we apply an efficient preconditioned steepest descent algorithm to solve the corresponding nonlinear systems. In addition, a global in time $H_{\rm per}^2$ stability of the numerical scheme is established at a theoretical level, which in turn ensures the full order convergence analysis of the scheme. A few numerical results are presented, which confirm the stability and accuracy of the proposed numerical scheme.

Convergence Analysis and Error Estimates for a Second Order Accurate Finite Element Method for the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes System

In this paper, we present a novel second order in time mixed finite element scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes equations with matched densities. The scheme combines a standard second order Crank-Nicholson method for the Navier-Stokes equations and a modification to the Crank-Nicholson method for the Cahn-Hilliard equation. In particular, a second order Adams-Bashforth extrapolation and a trapezoidal rule are included to help preserve the energy stability natural to the Cahn-Hilliard equation. We show that our scheme is unconditionally energy stable with respect to a modification of the continuous free energy of the PDE system. Specifically, the discrete phase variable is shown to be bounded in $\ell^\infty \left(0,T;L^\infty\right)$ and the discrete chemical potential bounded in $\ell^\infty \left(0,T;L^2\right)$, for any time and space step sizes, in two and three dimensions, and for any finite final time $T$. We subsequently prove that these variables along with the fluid velocity converge with optimal rates in the appropriate energy norms in both two and three dimensions.

Convergence Analysis and Numerical Implementation of a Second Order Numerical Scheme for the Three-Dimensional Phase Field Crystal Equation

In this paper we analyze and implement a second-order-in-time numerical scheme for the three-dimensional phase field crystal (PFC) equation. The numerical scheme was proposed in [46], with the unique solvability and unconditional energy stability established. However, its convergence analysis remains open. We present a detailed convergence analysis in this article, in which the maximum norm estimate of the numerical solution over grid points plays an essential role. Moreover, we outline the detailed multigrid method to solve the highly nonlinear numerical scheme over a cubic domain, and various three-dimensional numerical results are presented, including the numerical convergence test, complexity test of the multigrid solver and the polycrystal growth simulation.

Stability and Convergence of a Second Order Mixed Finite Element Method for the Cahn-Hilliard Equation

In this paper we devise and analyze an unconditionally stable, second-order-in-time numerical scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard equation in two and three space dimensions. We prove that our two-step scheme is unconditionally energy stable and unconditionally uniquely solvable. Furthermore, we show that the discrete phase variable is bounded in $L^\infty (0,T;L^\infty)$ and the discrete chemical potential is bounded in $L^\infty (0,T;L^2)$, for any time and space step sizes, in two and three dimensions, and for any finite final time $T$. We subsequently prove that these variables converge with optimal rates in the appropriate energy norms in both two and three dimensions. We include in this work a detailed analysis of the initialization of the two-step scheme.

Analysis of a Mixed Finite Element Method for a Cahn-Hilliard-Darcy-Stokes System

In this paper we devise and analyze a mixed finite element method for a modified Cahn-Hilliard equation coupled with a non-steady Darcy-Stokes flow that models phase separation and coupled fluid flow in immiscible binary fluids and diblock copolymer melts. The time discretization is based on a convex splitting of the energy of the equation. We prove that our scheme is unconditionally energy stable with respect to a spatially discrete analogue of the continuous free energy of the system and unconditionally uniquely solvable. We prove that the phase variable is bounded in $L^\infty \left(0,T,L^\infty\right)$ and the chemical potential is bounded in $L^\infty \left(0,T,L^2\right)$ absolutely unconditionally in two and three dimensions, for any finite final time $T$. We subsequently prove that these variables converge with optimal rates in the appropriate energy norms in both two and three dimensions.

Energy Stable and Efficient Finite-Difference Nonlinear Multigrid Schemes for the Modified Phase Field Crystal Equation

In this paper we present two unconditionally energy stable finite difference schemes for the Modified Phase Field Crystal (MPFC) equation, a sixth-order nonlinear damped wave equation, of which the purely parabolic Phase Field Crystal (PFC) model can be viewed as a special case. The first is a convex splitting scheme based on an appropriate decomposition of the discrete energy and is first order accurate in time and second order accurate in space. The second is a new, fully second-order scheme that also respects the convex splitting of the energy. Both schemes are nonlinear but may be formulated from the gradients of strictly convex, coercive functionals. Thus, both are uniquely solvable regardless of the time and space step sizes. The schemes are solved by efficient nonlinear multigrid methods. Numerical results are presented demonstrating the accuracy, energy stability, efficiency, and practical utility of the schemes. In particular, we show that our multigrid solvers enjoy optimal, or nearly optimal complexity in the solution of the nonlinear schemes.
