Partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms homotopic to the identity in dimension 3, Part I: The dynamically coherent case

We study 3-dimensional dynamically coherent partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms that are homotopic to the identity, focusing on the transverse geometry and topology of the center stable and center unstable foliations, and the dynamics within their leaves. We find a structural dichotomy for these foliations, which we use to show that every such diffeomorphism on a hyperbolic or Seifert fibered 3-manifold is leaf conjugate to the time one map of a (topological) Anosov flow. This proves a classification conjecture of Hertz-Hertz-Ures in hyperbolic 3-manifolds and in the homotopy class of the identity of Seifert manifolds.

Dynamical incoherence for a large class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms

We show that if a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism of a Seifert manifold induces a map in the base which has a pseudo-Anosov component then it cannot be dynamically coherent. This extends work of Bonatti, Gogolev, Hammerlindl and Potrie to the whole isotopy class. We relate the techniques with the study of certain partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in hyperbolic 3-manifolds performed in the previous paper by the authors. The appendix reviews some consequences of the Nielsen-Thurston classification of surface homeomorphisms to the dynamics of lifts of such maps to the universal cover.

Quantum Circuit Design for Solving Linear Systems of Equations

Recently, it is shown that quantum computers can be used for obtaining certain information about the solution of a linear system Ax=b exponentially faster than what is possible with classical computation. Here we first review some key aspects of the algorithm from the standpoint of finding its efficient quantum circuit implementation using only elementary quantum operations, which is important for determining the potential usefulness of the algorithm in practical settings. Then we present a small-scale quantum circuit that solves a 2x2 linear system. The quantum circuit uses only 4 qubits, implying a tempting possibility for experimental realization. Furthermore, the circuit is numerically simulated and its performance under different circuit parameter settings is demonstrated.

Quasigeodesic flows and sphere-filling curves

Given a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold M with a quasigeodesic flow we construct a π_1-equivariant sphere-filling curve in the boundary of hyperbolic space. Specifically, we show that any complete transversal P to the lifted flow on H^3 has a natural compactification as a closed disc that inherits a π_1 action. The embedding of P in H^3 extends continuously to the compactification and the restriction to the boundary is a surjective π_1-equivariant map from S^1 to S^2_\infty. This generalizes the result of Cannon and Thurston for fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
