H I Column Densities, Metallicities, and Dust Extinction of Metal-Strong Damped Lya Systems

With the Blue Channel Spectrograph (BCS) on the MMT telescope, we have obtained spectra to the atmospheric cutoff of quasars previously known to show at least one absorption system at z>1.6 with very strong metal lines (candidate metal-strong damped Lya systems; cMSDLAs). The BCS/MMT spectra yield precise estimates of the HI column densities (NHI) of the systems through Voigt profile analysis of their Lya transitions. Nearly all of the cMSDLAs (41/43) satisfy the NHI criterion of DLAs, 10^20.3. As a population, these systems have systematically higher NHI values than DLAs chosen randomly from quasar sightlines. Combining our NHI measurements with previously measured metal column densities, we estimate metallicities for the MSDLAs. These systems have significantly higher values than randomly selected DLAs; at z~2, the MSDLAs show a median metallicity [M/H] ~ -0.67 that is 0.6dex higher than a corresponding control sample. This establishes MSDLAs as having amongst the most metal-rich gas in the high z universe. Our measurements extend the observed correlation between SiII 1526 equivalent width and the gas metallicity to higher values. If interpreted as a mass-metallicity relation, this implies the MSDLAs are the high mass subset of the DLA population. We demonstrate that dust in the MSDLAs reddens their background quasars, with a median shift in the spectral slope of Da = 0.29. Assuming an SMC extinction law, this implies a median reddening E(B-V)=0.025mag and visual extinction A_V=0.076mag. Future studies of MSDLAs offer the opportunity to study the extinction, nucleosynthesis, and kinematics of the most chemically evolved, gas-rich galaxies at high z. [abridged]

Super-Solar Super Lyman Limit Systems

We present abundance measurements for two super Lyman Limit systems (SLLS; quasar absorption line systems with 10^19 cm^-2 < N_HI < 10^20.3 cm^-2) selected from a set of metal-strong absorbers in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar database. After applying estimate corrections for photoionization effects, we derive gas-phase metallicities of [M/H]=+0.7 +/- 0.2 dex for the SLLS at z=1.7749 toward SDSS0927+5621 and [M/H]=+0.05 +/- 0.1 dex for the SLLS at z=1.7678 toward SDSS0953+5230. The former exhibits among the highest gas metallicity of any astrophysical environment and its total metal surface density exceeds that of nearly every known damped Lya system. The properties of these absorbers -- high metallicity and large velocity width (> 300 km/s) -- resemble those of gas observed in absorption in the spectra of bright, star-forming galaxies at high redshift. We discuss the metal mass density of the SLLS based on these observations and our ongoing SLLS survey and argue that a conservative estimate to the total metal budget at z=2 is greater than 15% of the total, suggesting that the metal-rich LLS may represent the dominant metal reservoir in the young universe.

The SDSS Damped Lya Survey: Data Release 1

We present the results from an automated search for damped Lya (DLA) systems in the quasar spectra of Data Release 1 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR1). At z~2.5, this homogeneous dataset has greater statistical significance than the previous two decades of research. We derive a statistical sample of 71 damped Lya systems (>50 previously unpublished) at z>2.1 and measure HI column densities directly from the SDSS spectra. The number of DLA systems per unit redshift is consistent with previous measurements and we expect our survey has >95% completeness. We examine the cosmological baryonic mass density of neutral gas Omega_g inferred from the damped Lya systems from the SDSS-DR1 survey and a combined sample drawn from the literature. Contrary to previous results, the Omega_g values do not require a significant correction from Lyman limit systems at any redshift. We also find that the Omega_g values for the SDSS-DR1 sample do not decline at high redshift and the combined sample shows a (statistically insignificant) decrease only at z>4. Future data releases from SDSS will provide the definitive survey of DLA systems at z~2.5 and will significantly reduce the uncertainty in Omega_g at higher redshift.
