Designing an upgrade of the Medley setup for light-ion production and fission cross-section measurements

Measurements of neutron-induced fission cross sections and light-ion production are planned in the energy range 1-40 MeV at the upcoming Neutrons For Science (NFS) facility. In order to prepare our detector setup for the neutron beam with continuous energy spectrum, a simulation software was written using the Geant4 toolkit for both measurement situations. The neutron energy range around 20 MeV is troublesome when it comes to the cross sections used by Geant4 since data-driven cross sections are only available below 20 MeV but not above, where they are based on semi-empirical models. Several customisations were made to the standard classes in Geant4 in order to produce consistent results over the whole simulated energy range. Expected uncertainties are reported for both types of measurements. The simulations have shown that a simultaneous precision measurement of the three standard cross sections H(n,n), $^{235}$U(n,f) and $^{238}$U(n,f) relative to each other is feasible using a triple layered target. As high resolution timing detectors for fission fragments we plan to use Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters (PPACs). The simulation results have put some restrictions on the design of these detectors as well as on the target design. This study suggests a fissile target no thicker than 2 micrometers (1.7 mg/cm$^2$) and a PPAC foil thickness preferably less than 1 micrometer. We also comment on the usability of Geant4 for simulation studies of neutron reactions in this energy range.

Combining Total Monte Carlo and Benchmarks for nuclear data uncertainty propagation on an LFRs safety parameters

Analyses are carried out to assess the impact of nuclear data uncertainties on keff for the European Lead Cooled Training Reactor (ELECTRA) using the Total Monte Carlo method. A large number of Pu-239 random ENDF-formated libraries generated using the TALYS based system were processed into ACE format with NJOY99.336 code and used as input into the Serpent Monte Carlo neutron transport code to obtain distribution in keff. The keff distribution obtained was compared with the latest major nuclear data libraries - JEFF-3.1.2, ENDF/B-VII.1 and JENDL-4.0. A method is proposed for the selection of benchmarks for specific applications using the Total Monte Carlo approach. Finally, an accept/reject criterion was investigated based on chi square values obtained using the Pu-239 Jezebel criticality benchmark. It was observed that nuclear data uncertainties in keff were reduced considerably from 748 to 443 pcm by applying a more rigid acceptance criteria for accepting random files.

Comments on the report "Indications of anomalous heat energy production in a reactor device containing hydrogen loaded nickel powder" [arXiv:1305.3913] by G.Levi, E.Foschi, T.Hartman, B.Höistad, R.Pettersson, L.Tegnér, H.Essén

In a recent report titled "Indications of anomalous heat energy production in a reactor device containing hydrogen loaded nickel powder" and published on arXiv, G. Levi and co-workers put forth several claims concerning the operations and performance of the so-called E-Cat of inventor Andrea Rossi. We note first of all that the circumstances and people involved in the test make it far from being an independent one. We examine the claims put forth by the authors and note that in many cases they are not supported by the facts given in the report. We present results from thermal calculations showing that alternative explanations are possible were the authors seem to jump to conclusions fitting pre-conceived ideas. In general we find that much attention is drawn to trivialities, while important pieces of information and investigation are lacking and seem not to have been conducted or considered. We also note that the proposed claims would require new physics in not only one but several areas. Besides a cold-fusion like process without production of any radiation also extreme new material properties would be needed to explain what rather seems to be a problem of correct measurement. Therefore, it is clear to us that a truly independent and scientific investigation of the so called E-Cat device, convincingly demonstrating an "anomalous heat energy production" has not been presented in the arXiv report and is thus, to-date, still lacking.

Uncertainty study of nuclear model parameters for the n+ ^{56}Fe reactions in the fast neutron region below 20 MeV

In this work, we study the uncertainty of nuclear model parameters for neutron induced ^{56}Fe reactions in fast neutron region by using the Total Monte Carlo method. We perform a large number of TALYS runs and compare the calculated results with the experimental data of the cross sections to obtain the uncertainties of the model parameters. Based on the derived uncertainties another 1000 TALYS runs have been performed to create random cross section files. For comparison with the experimental data we calculate a weighted χ^2 value for each random file as well as the ENDF/B-VII.1, JEFF3.1, JENDL4.0 and CENDL3.1 data libraries. Furthermore, we investigate the optical model parameters correlation obtained by way of this procedure.

String model description of polarisation and angular distributions in pbar p -> Lambdabar Lambda at low energies

The observed polarisation of Lambda hyperons from the inclusive pA -> Lambda X reaction at high energies has previously been well described within the Lund string model through polarised ss quark pair production in the string breaking hadronisation process. This model is here applied to the exclusive pbar p -> Lambdabar Lambda reaction at low energies and compared to available data sets down to an incident beam momentum of 1.835 GeV/c. This required an extension of the diquark scattering model to involve three components: an isotropic part relevant close to threshold, a spectator part and a forward scattering part as in pA -> Lambda X at high energies. The observed angular distributions are then reproduced and, for momentum transfers above |t'| = 0.2 GeV^2, agreement with the measured polarisation is also obtained.
