Partial Serre duality and cocompact objects

A successful theme in the development of triangulated categories has been the study of compact objects. A weak dual notion called 0-cocompact objects was introduced in arXiv:1801.07995, motivated by the fact that sets of such objects cogenerate co-t-structures, dual to the t-structures generated by sets of compact objects. In the present paper, we show that the notion of 0-cocompact objects also appears naturally in the presence of certain dualities. We introduce "partial Serre duality", which is shown to link compact to 0-cocompact objects. We show that partial Serre duality gives rise to an Auslander--Reiten theory, which in turn implies a weaker notion of duality which we call "non-degenerate composition", and throughout this entire hierarchy of dualities the objects involved are 0-(co)compact. Furthermore, we produce explicit partial Serre functors for multiple flavors of homotopy categories, thus illustrating that this type of duality, as well as the resulting 0-cocompact objects, are abundant in prevalent triangulated categories.

Representation theory of Geigle-Lenzing complete intersections

Weighted projective lines, introduced by Geigle and Lenzing in 1987, are important objects in representation theory. They have tilting bundles, whose endomorphism algebras are the canonical algebras introduced by Ringel. The aim of this paper is to study their higher dimensional analogs. First, we introduce a certain class of commutative Gorenstein rings $R$ graded by abelian groups $L$ of rank $1$, which we call Geigle-Lenzing complete intersections. We study the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay representations $CM^LR$, which coincides with the singularity category $D_{sg}^L(R)$. We show that the stable category of $CM^LR$ is triangle equivalent to $D^b(mod A^{CM})$ for a finite dimensional algebra $A^{CM}$, which we call the CM-canonical algebra. As an application, we classify the $(R,L)$ that are Cohen-Macaulay finite. We also give sufficient conditions for $(R,L)$ to be $d$-Cohen-Macaulay finite in the sense of higher Auslander-Reiten theory. Secondly, we study a new class of non-commutative projective schemes in the sense of Artin-Zhang, i.e. the category $coh X=mod^LR/mod^L_0R$ of coherent sheaves on the Geigle-Lenzing projective space $X$. Geometrically this is the quotient stack $[(Spec R-{R_+})/Spec k[L]]$. We show that $D^b(coh X)$ is triangle equivalent to $D^b(mod A^{ca})$ for a finite dimensional algebra $A^{ca}$, which we call a $d$-canonical algebra. We study when $X$ is $d$-vector bundle finite, and when $X$ is derived equivalent to a $d$-representation infinite algebra in the sense of higher Auslander-Reiten theory. Our $d$-canonical algebras provide a rich source of $d$-Fano and $d$-anti-Fano algebras in non-commutative algebraic geometry. We also observe Orlov-type semiorthogonal decompositions of $D_{sg}^L(R)$ and $D^b(coh X)$.

A recollement approach to Geigle-Lenzing weighted projective varieties

We introduce a new method for expanding an abelian category and study it using recollements. In particular, we give a criterion for the existence of cotilting objects. We show, using techniques from noncommutative algebraic geometry, that our construction encompasses the category of coherent sheaves on Geigle-Lenzing weighted projective lines. We apply our construction to some concrete examples and obtain new weighted projective varieties and analyse the endomorphism algebras of their tilting bundles.

Higher preprojective algebras and stably Calabi-Yau properties

In this paper, we give sufficient properties for a finite dimensional graded algebra to be a higher preprojective algebra. These properties are of homological nature, they use Gorensteiness and bimodule isomorphisms in the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules. We prove that these properties are also necessary for $3$-preprojective algebras using \cite{Kel11} and for preprojective algebras of higher representation finite algebras using \cite{Dugas}.

The Gorenstein defect category

We consider the homotopy category of complexes of projective modules over a Noetherian ring. Truncation at degree zero induces a fully faithful triangle functor from the totally acyclic complexes to the stable derived category. We show that if the ring is either Artin or commutative Noetherian local, then the functor is dense if and only if the ring is Gorenstein. Motivated by this, we define the Gorenstein defect category of the ring, a category which in some sense measures how far the ring is from being Gorenstein.

Algebras of acyclic cluster type: tree type and type $\widetilde{A}$

In this paper, we study algebras of global dimension at most 2 whose generalized cluster category is equivalent to the cluster category of an acyclic quiver which is either a tree or of type $\widetilde{A}$. We are particularly interested in their derived equivalence classification. We prove that each algebra which is cluster equivalent to a tree quiver is derived equivalent to the path algebra of this tree. Then we describe explicitly the algebras of cluster type $\A_n$ for each possible orientation of $\A_n$. We give an explicit way to read off in which derived equivalence class such an algebra lies, and describe the Auslander-Reiten quiver of its derived category. Together, these results in particular provide a complete classification of algebras which are cluster equivalent to tame acyclic quivers.

Cluster equivalence and graded derived equivalence

In this paper we introduce a new approach for organizing algebras of global dimension at most 2. We introduce the notion of cluster equivalence for these algebras, based on whether their generalized cluster categories are equivalent. We are particularly interested in the question how much information about an algebra is preserved in its generalized cluster category, or, in other words, how closely two algebras are related if they have equivalent generalized cluster categories. Our approach makes use of the cluster-tilting objects in the generalized cluster categories: We first observe that cluster-tilting objects in generalized cluster categories are in natural bijection with cluster-tilting subcategories of derived categories, and then prove a recognition theorem for the latter. Using this recognition theorem we give a precise criterion when two cluster equivalent algebras are derived equivalent. For a given algebra we further describe all the derived equivalent algebras which have the same canonical cluster tilting object in their generalized cluster category. Finally we show that in general, if two algebras are cluster equivalent, then (under certain conditions) the algebras can be graded in such a way that the categories of graded modules are derived equivalent. To this end we introduce mutation of graded quivers with potential, and show that this notion reflects mutation in derived categories.

n-Representation infinite algebras

From the viewpoint of higher dimensional Auslander-Reiten theory, we introduce a new class of finite dimensional algebras of global dimension n, which we call n-representation infinite. They are a certain analog of representation infinite hereditary algebras, and we study three important classes of modules: n-preprojective, n-preinjective and n-regular modules. We observe that their homological behaviour is quite interesting. For instance they provide first examples of algebras having infinite Ext^1-orthogonal families of modules. Moreover we give general constructions of n-representation infinite algebras. Applying Minamoto's theory on Fano algebras in non-commutative algebraic geometry, we describe the category of n-regular modules in terms of the corresponding preprojective algebra. Then we introduce n-representation tame algebras, and show that the category of n-regular modules decomposes into the categories of finite dimensional modules over localizations of the preprojective algebra. This generalizes the classical description of regular modules over tame hereditary algebras. As an application, we show that the representation dimension of an n-representation tame algebra is at least n+2.

Higher dimensional cluster combinatorics and representation theory

Higher Auslander algebras were introduced by Iyama generalizing classical concepts from representation theory of finite dimensional algebras. Recently these higher analogues of classical representation theory have been increasingly studied. Cyclic polytopes are classical objects of study in convex geometry. In particular, their triangulations have been studied with a view towards generalizing the rich combinatorial structure of triangulations of polygons. In this paper, we demonstrate a connection between these two seemingly unrelated subjects. We study triangulations of even-dimensional cyclic polytopes and tilting modules for higher Auslander algebras of linearly oriented type A which are summands of the cluster tilting module. We show that such tilting modules correspond bijectively to triangulations. Moreover mutations of tilting modules correspond to bistellar flips of triangulations. For any d-representation finite algebra we introduce a certain d-dimensional cluster category and study its cluster tilting objects. For higher Auslander algebras of linearly oriented type A we obtain a similar correspondence between cluster tilting objects and triangulations of a certain cyclic polytope. Finally we study certain functions on generalized laminations in cyclic polytopes, and show that they satisfy analogues of tropical cluster exchange relations. Moreover we observe that the terms of these exchange relations are closely related to the terms occuring in the mutation of cluster tilting objects.

Stable categories of higher preprojective algebras

We introduce (n+1)-preprojective algebras of algebras of global dimension n. We show that if an algebra is n-representation-finite then its (n+1)-preprojective algebra is self-injective. In this situation, we show that the stable module category of the (n+1)-preprojective algebra is (n+1)-Calabi-Yau, and, more precisely, it is the (n+1)-Amiot cluster category of the stable n-Auslander algebra of the original algebra. In particular this stable category contains an (n+1)-cluster tilting object. We show that even if the (n+1)-preprojective algebra is not self-injective, under certain assumptions (which are always satisfied for n \in {1,2}) the results above still hold for the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules.

Cluster tilting and complexity

We study the notion of positive and negative complexity of pairs of objects in cluster categories. The first main result shows that the maximal complexity occurring is either one, two or infinite, depending on the representation type of the underlying hereditary algebra. In the the second result, we study the bounded derived category of a cluster tilted algebra, and show that the maximal complexity occurring is either zero or one whenever the algebra is of finite or tame type.

The image of the derived category in the cluster category

Cluster categories of hereditary algebras have been introduced as orbit categories of their derived categories. Keller has pointed out that for non-hereditary algebras orbit categories need not be triangulated, and he introduced the notion of triangulated hull to overcome this problem. In this paper we study the image if the natural functor from the bounded derived category to the cluster category, that is we investigate how far the orbit category is from being the cluster category. We show that for wide classes of non-piecewise hereditary algebras the orbit category is never equal to the cluster category.
