Multiple soft radiation at one-loop order and the emission of a soft quark-antiquark pair

We consider the radiation of two or more soft partons in QCD hard-scattering at one-loop order. The corresponding scattering amplitude is singular, and the singular behaviour is controlled by a process-independent soft current. Using regularization in $d=4 - 2ε$ space-time dimensions, we explicitly evaluate the ultraviolet and infrared divergent ($ε$-pole) terms of the one-loop soft current for emission of an arbitrary number of soft partons in a generic hard-scattering process. Then we consider the specific case of soft quark-antiquark ($q{\bar q}$) emission and we compute the one-loop current by including the finite terms. We find that the one-loop soft-$q{\bar q}$ current exhibits a new type of transverse-momentum singularity, which has a quantum (absorptive) origin and a purely non-abelian character. At the squared amplitude (cross section) level, this transverse-momentum singularity produces contributions to multijet production processes in hadron collisions. The one-loop squared current also leads to charge asymmetry terms, which are a distinctive features of soft-$q{\bar q}$ radiation. We also extend these results to the cases of QED and mixed QCD$\times$QED radiative corrections for soft fermion-antifermion emission.

DYTurbo: Fast predictions for Drell-Yan processes

Drell-Yan lepton pair production processes are extremely important for Standard Model (SM) precision tests and for beyond the SM searches at hadron colliders. Fast and accurate predictions are essential to enable the best use of the precision measurements of these processes; they are used for parton density fits, for the extraction of fundamental parameters of the SM, and for the estimation of background processes in searches. This paper describes a new numerical program, DYTurbo, for the calculation of the QCD transverse-momentum resummation of Drell-Yan cross sections up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy combined with the fixed-order results at next-to-next-to-leading order ($\mathcal{O}(α_{\mathrm{S}}^2)$), including the full kinematical dependence of the decaying lepton pair with the corresponding spin correlations and the finite-width effects. The DYTurbo program is an improved reimplementation of the DYqT, DYqT and DYNNLO programs, which provides fast and numerically precise predictions through the factorisation of the cross section into production and decay variables, and the usage of quadrature rules based on interpolating functions for the integration over kinematic variables.

Top-quark pair hadroproduction at NNLO: differential predictions with the MSbar mass

We consider top-quark pair production at the LHC within the MSbar scheme for the renormalisation of the top-quark mass, and we present predictions for total and differential cross sections at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD. Our state-of-the-art calculation extends the available differential results by one order in the perturbative expansion, and it is relevant for a precise determination of the top-quark mass, including possible effects of the running mass in the MSbar scheme. We consider variations of the scale at which the MSbar mass of the top quark is evaluated, extending the usual 7-point to a 15-point scale variation. This additional variation is crucial for a reliable estimate of the theoretical uncertainties, especially at low perturbative orders and close to the production threshold of the top-quark pair. We also compute, for the first time, the invariant-mass distribution of the top-quark pair by using a running mass, evaluated at a dynamic scale. Our predictions for the invariant-mass distribution in the MSbar scheme are compared with a recent measurement performed by the CMS Collaboration. We observe that the inclusion of the NNLO corrections improves the agreement with the data, and we discuss effects due to the QCD running of the MSbar mass of the top quark.

Triple (and quadruple) soft-gluon radiation in QCD hard scattering

We consider the radiation of three soft gluons in a generic process for multiparton hard scattering in QCD. In the soft limit the corresponding scattering amplitude has a singular behaviour that is factorized and controlled by a colorful soft current. We compute the tree-level current for triple soft-gluon emission from both massless and massive hard partons. The three-gluon current is expressed in terms of maximally non-abelian irreducible correlations. We compute the soft behaviour of squared amplitudes and the colour correlations produced by the squared current. The radiation of one and two soft gluons leads to colour dipole correlations. Triple soft-gluon radiation produces in addition colour quadrupole correlations between the hard partons. We examine the soft and collinear singularities of the squared current in various energy ordered and angular ordered regions. We discuss some features of soft radiation to all-loop orders for processes with two and three hard partons. Considering triple soft-gluon radiation from three hard partons, colour quadrupole interactions break the Casimir scaling symmetry between quarks and gluons. We also present some results on the radiation of four soft gluons from two hard partons, and we discuss the colour monster contribution and its relation with the violation (and generalization) of Casimir scaling. We also compute the first correction of ${\cal O}(1/N_c^2)$ to the eikonal formula for multiple soft-gluon radiation with strong energy ordering from two hard gluons.

Diphoton production at hadron colliders: a fully-differential QCD calculation at NNLO

We consider direct diphoton production in hadron collisions, and we compute the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD radiative corrections at the fully-differential level. Our calculation uses the $q_T$ subtraction formalism and it is implemented in a parton level Monte Carlo program. The program allows the user to apply arbitrary kinematical cuts on the final-state photons and the associated jet activity, and to compute the corresponding distributions in the form of bin histograms. We present selected numerical results related to Higgs boson searches at the LHC and corresponding results at the Tevatron.

The $q_T$ subtraction method for top quark production at hadron colliders

We consider QCD radiative corrections to top-quark pair production at hadron colliders. We use the $q_T$ subtraction formalism to perform a fully-differential computation for this process. Our calculation is accurate up to the next-to-leading order in QCD perturbation theory and it includes all the flavour off-diagonal partonic channels at the next-to-next-to-leading order. We present a comparison of our numerical results with those obtained with the publicly available numerical programs MCFM and Top++.

Vector boson production at hadron colliders: transverse-momentum resummation and leptonic decay

We consider the transverse-momentum ($q_T$) distribution of Drell-Yan lepton pairs produced, via $W$ and $Z/γ^*$ decay, in hadronic collisions. At small values of $q_T$, we resum the logarithmically-enhanced perturbative QCD contributions up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Resummed results are consistently combined with the known ${\mathcal O}(α_S^2)$ fixed-order results at intermediate and large values of $q_T$. Our calculation includes the leptonic decay of the vector boson with the corresponding spin correlations, the finite-width effects and the full dependence on the final-state lepton(s) kinematics. The computation is encoded in the numerical program DYRes, which allows the user to apply arbitrary kinematical cuts on the final-state leptons and to compute the corresponding distributions in the form of bin histograms. We present a comparison of our results with some of the available LHC data. The inclusion of the leptonic decay in the resummed calculation requires a theoretical discussion on the $q_T$ recoil due to the transverse momentum of the produced vector boson. We present a $q_T$ recoil procedure that is directly applicable to $q_T$ resummed calculations for generic production processes of high-mass systems in hadron collisions.

Isolating Prompt Photons with Narrow Cones

We discuss the isolation of prompt photons in hadronic collisions by means of narrow isolation cones and the QCD computation of the corresponding cross sections. We reconsider the occurence of large perturbative terms with logarithmic dependence on the cone size and their impact on the fragmentation scale dependence. We cure the apparent perturbative violation of unitarity for small cone sizes, which had been noticed earlier in next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculations, by resumming the leading logarithmic dependence on the cone size. We discuss possible implications regarding the implementation of some hollow cone variants of the cone criterion, which simulate the experimental difficulty to impose isolation inside the region filled by the electromagnetic shower that develops in the calorimeter.

Factorization violation in the multiparton collinear limit

We present an all-order generalized factorization formula for QCD scattering amplitudes in kinematical configurations where two or more momenta of the external partons become collinear. The singular behaviour of the scattering amplitudes in the collinear limit is encoded by collinear splitting matrices. In the space-like region and beyond the tree level, the collinear splitting matrices depend also on the momenta and quantum numbers of the non-collinear partons, thus breaking strict collinear factorization. Although the factorization breaking contribution partly cancels for squared amplitudes, due to its one-loop absorptive origin, remaining effects at high perturbative orders have implications on the non-abelian structure of logarithmically-enhanced terms in perturbative calculations and on various factorization issues of mass singularities.

Space-like (vs. time-like) collinear limits in QCD: is factorization violated?

We consider the singular behaviour of QCD scattering amplitudes in kinematical configurations where two or more momenta of the external partons become collinear. At the tree level, this behaviour is known to be controlled by factorization formulae in which the singular collinear factor is universal (process independent). We show that this strict (process-independent) factorization is not valid at one-loop and higher-loop orders in the case of the collinear limit in space-like regions (e.g., collinear radiation from initial-state partons). We introduce a generalized version of all-order collinear factorization, in which the space-like singular factors retain some dependence on the momentum and colour charge of the non-collinear partons. We present explicit results on one-loop and two-loop amplitudes for both the two-parton and multiparton collinear limits. At the level of square amplitudes and, more generally, cross sections in hadron--hadron collisions, the violation of strict collinear factorization has implications on the non-abelian structure of logarithmically-enhanced terms in perturbative calculations (starting from the next-to-next-to-leading order) and on various factorization issues of mass singularities (starting from the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order).

A Tree-Loop Duality Relation at Two Loops and Beyond

The duality relation between one-loop integrals and phase-space integrals, developed in a previous work, is extended to higher-order loops. The duality relation is realized by a modification of the customary +i0 prescription of the Feynman propagators, which compensates for the absence of the multiple-cut contributions that appear in the Feynman tree theorem. We rederive the duality theorem at one-loop order in a form that is more suitable for its iterative extension to higher-loop orders. We explicitly show its application to two- and three-loop scalar master integrals, and we discuss the structure of the occurring cuts and the ensuing results in detail.

The triple collinear limit of one-loop QCD amplitudes

We consider the singular behaviour of one-loop QCD matrix elements when several external partons become simultaneously parallel. We present a new factorization formula that describes the singular collinear behaviour directly in colour space. The collinear singularities are embodied in process-independent splitting matrices that depend on the momenta, flavours, spins and colours of the collinear partons. We give the general structure of the infrared and ultraviolet divergences of the one-loop splitting matrices. We also present explicit one-loop results for the triple collinear splitting, $q \to q {\bar Q} Q$, of a quark and a quark--antiquark pair of different flavours. The one-loop triple collinear splitting is one of the ingredients that can be used to compute the evolution of parton distributions at the next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD perturbation theory.

One-loop Singular Behaviour of QCD and SUSY QCD Amplitudes with Massive Partons

We discuss the structure of infrared and ultraviolet singularities in on-shell QCD and supersymmetric QCD amplitudes at one-loop order. Previous results, valid for massless partons, are extended to the case of massive partons. Using dimensional regularization, we present a general factorization formula that controls both the singular epsilon-poles and the logarithmic contributions that become singular for vanishing masses. We introduce generalized Altarelli--Parisi splitting functions and discuss their relations with the singular terms in the amplitudes. The dependence on the regularization scheme is also considered.

Corrections of Order α_s^2 to the Forward-Backward Asymmetry

We calculate the second-order QCD corrections to the forward-backward asymmetry in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. Using the quark axis definition, we do not agree with either existing calculation, but the difference relative to one of them is small and understood. In particular, we point out that the forward-backward asymmetry of massive quarks is enhanced by logarithms of the quark mass. This implies that the forward-backward asymmetry of massless quarks is not computable in QCD perturbation theory and affected by non-power-suppressed corrections coming from the non-perturbative fragmentation functions. We also calculate the second-order corrections using the experimentally-preferred thrust axis definition for the first time.

Regularization Scheme Independence and Unitarity in QCD Cross Sections

When calculating next-to-leading order QCD cross sections, divergences in intermediate steps of the calculation must be regularized. The final result is independent of the regularization scheme used, provided that it is unitary. In this paper we explore the relationship between regularization scheme independence and unitarity. We show how the regularization scheme dependence can be isolated in simple universal components, and how unitarity can be guaranteed for any regularization prescription that can consistently be introduced in one-loop amplitudes. Finally, we show how to derive transition rules between different schemes without having to do any loop calculations.
