Area minimizing surfaces in homotopy classes in metric spaces

We introduce and study a notion of relative 1-homotopy type for Sobolev maps from a surface to a metric space spanning a given collection of Jordan curves. We use this to establish the existence and local Hölder regularity of area minimizing surfaces in a given relative 1-homotopy class in proper geodesic metric spaces admitting a local quadratic isoperimetric inequality. If the underlying space has trivial second homotopy group then relatively 1-homotopic maps are relatively homotopic. We also obtain an analog for closed surfaces in a given 1-homotopy class. Our theorems generalize and strengthen results of Lemaire, Jost, Schoen-Yau, and Sacks-Uhlenbeck.

Canonical parametrizations of metric discs

We use the recently established existence and regularity of area and energy minimizing discs in metric spaces to obtain canonical parametrizations of metric surfaces. Our approach yields a new and conceptually simple proof of a well-known theorem of Bonk and Kleiner on the existence of quasisymmetric parametrizations of linearly locally connected, Ahlfors $2$-regular metric $2$-spheres. Generalizations and applications to the geometry of such surfaces are described.

Dehn functions and Hölder extensions in asymptotic cones

The Dehn function measures the area of minimal discs that fill closed curves in a space; it is an important invariant in analysis, geometry, and geometric group theory. There are several equivalent ways to define the Dehn function, varying according to the type of disc used. In this paper, we introduce a new definition of the Dehn function and use it to prove several theorems. First, we generalize the quasi-isometry invariance of the Dehn function to a broad class of spaces. Second, we prove Hölder extension properties for spaces with quadratic Dehn function and their asymptotic cones. Finally, we show that ultralimits and asymptotic cones of spaces with quadratic Dehn function also have quadratic Dehn function. The proofs of our results rely on recent existence and regularity results for area-minimizing Sobolev mappings in metric spaces.

Intrinsic structure of minimal discs in metric spaces

We study the intrinsic structure of parametric minimal discs in metric spaces admitting a quadratic isoperimetric inequality. We associate to each minimal disc a compact, geodesic metric space whose geometric, topological, and analytic properties are controlled by the isoperimetric inequality. Its geometry can be used to control the shapes of all curves and therefore the geometry and topology of the original metric space. The class of spaces arising in this way as intrinsic minimal discs is a natural generalization of the class of Ahlfors regular discs, well-studied in analysis on metric spaces.

Area minimizing discs in metric spaces

We solve the classical problem of Plateau in the setting of proper metric spaces. Precisely, we prove that among all disc-type surfaces with prescribed Jordan boundary in a proper metric space there exists an area minimizing disc which moreover has a quasi-conformal parametrization. If the space supports a local quadratic isoperimetric inequality for curves we prove that such a solution is locally Hölder continuous in the interior and continuous up to the boundary. Our results generalize corresponding results of Douglas and Morrey from the setting of Euclidean space and Riemannian manifolds to that of proper metric spaces.

Energy and area minimizers in metric spaces

We show that in the setting of proper metric spaces one obtains a solution of the classical two-dimensional Plateau problem by minimizing the energy, as in the classical case, once a definition of area (in the sense of convex geometry) has been chosen appropriately. We prove the quasi-convexity of this new definition of area. Under the assumption of a quadratic isoperimetric inequality we establish regularity results for energy minimizers and improve Hoelder exponents of some area-minimizing discs.

Regularity of harmonic discs in spaces with quadratic isoperimetric inequality

We study harmonic and quasi-harmonic discs in metric spaces admitting a uniformly local quadratic isoperimetric inequality for curves. The class of such metric spaces includes compact Lipschitz manifolds, metric spaces with upper or lower curvature bounds in the sense of Alexandrov, some sub-Riemannian manifolds, and many more. In this setting, we prove local Hoelder continuity and continuity up to the boundary of harmonic and quasi-harmonic discs.

Wolfe's theorem for weakly differentiable cochains

A fundamental theorem of Wolfe isometrically identifies the space of flat differential forms of dimension $m$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with the space of flat $m$-cochains, that is, the dual space of flat chains of dimension $m$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The main purpose of the present paper is to generalize Wolfe's theorem to the setting of Sobolev differential forms and Sobolev cochains in $\mathbb{R}^n$. A suitable theory of Sobolev cochains has recently been initiated by the second and third author. It is based on the concept of upper norm and upper gradient of a cochain, introduced in analogy with Heinonen-Koskela's concept of upper gradient of a function.

Lipschitz homotopy groups of the Heisenberg groups

Lipschitz and horizontal maps from an $n$-dimensional space into the $(2n+1)$-dimensional Heisenberg group $\H^n$ are abundant, while maps from higher-dimensional spaces are much more restricted. DeJarnette-Hajłasz-Lukyanenko-Tyson constructed horizontal maps from $S^k$ to $\H^n$ which factor through $n$-spheres and showed that these maps have no smooth horizontal fillings. In this paper, however, we build on an example of Kaufman to show that these maps sometimes have Lipschitz fillings. This shows that the Lipschitz and the smooth horizontal homotopy groups of a space may differ. Conversely, we show that any Lipschitz map $S^k\to \H^1$ factors through a tree and is thus Lipschitz null-homotopic if $k\ge 2$.

An upper gradient approach to weakly differentiable cochains

The aim of the present paper is to define a notion of weakly differentiable cochain in the generality of metric measure spaces and to study basic properties of such cochains. Our cochains are (sub-)linear functionals on a subspace of chains, and a suitable notion of chains in metric spaces is given by Ambrosio-Kirchheim's theory of metric currents. The notion of weak differentiability we introduce is in analogy with Heinonen-Koskela's concept of upper gradients of functions. In one of the main results of our paper, we prove continuity estimates for cochains with $p$-integrable upper gradient in $n$-dimensional Lie groups endowed with a left-invariant Finsler metric. Our result generalizes the well-known Morrey-Sobolev inequality for Sobolev functions. Finally, we prove several results relating capacity and modulus to Hausdorff dimension.

Plateau's problem for integral currents in locally non-compact metric spaces

The purpose of this article is to prove existence of mass minimizing integral currents with prescribed possibly non-compact boundary in all dual Banach spaces and furthermore in certain spaces without linear structure, such as injective metric spaces and Hadamard spaces. We furthermore prove a weak$^*$-compactness theorem for integral currents in dual spaces of separable Banach spaces. Our theorems generalize results of Ambrosio-Kirchheim, Lang, the author, and recent results of Ambrosio-Schmidt.

Nilpotent groups without exactly polynomial Dehn function

We prove super-quadratic lower bounds for the growth of the filling area function of a certain class of Carnot groups. This class contains groups for which it is known that their Dehn function grows no faster than $n^2\log n$. We therefore obtain the existence of (finitely generated) nilpotent groups whose Dehn functions do not have exactly polynomial growth and we thus answer a well-known question about the possible growth rate of Dehn functions of nilpotent groups.

The pointed flat compactness theorem for locally integral currents

Recently, a new embedding/compactness theorem for integral currents in a sequence of metric spaces has been established by the second author. We present a version of this result for locally integral currents in a sequence of pointed metric spaces. To this end we introduce another variant of the Ambrosio--Kirchheim theory of currents in metric spaces, including currents with finite mass in bounded sets.

Weak convergence and cancellation

In this article, we study the relationship between the weak limit of a sequence of integral currents in a metric space and the possible Hausdorff limit of the sequence of supports. Due to cancellation, the weak limit is in general supported in a strict subset of the Hausdorff limit. We exhibit sufficient conditions in terms of topology of the supports which ensure that no cancellation occurs and that the support of the weak limit agrees with the Hausdorff limit of the supports. We use our results to prove countable $\hm^m$-rectifiability of the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of sequences of Lipschitz manifolds $M_n$ all of which are $λ$-linearly locally contractible up to some scale $r_0$. In an appendix, written by Raanan Schul and the second author, it is shown that the Gromov-Hausdorff limit need not be countably $\hm^m$-rectifiable if the $M_n$ have a common local geometric contractibility function which is only concave (and not linear). We also relate our results to work of Cheeger-Colding on the limits of noncollapsing sequences of manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature.
