The Third Way to Interacting $p$-form Theories

We construct a class of interacting $(d-2)$-form theories in $d$ dimensions that are `third way' consistent. This refers to the fact that the interaction terms in the $p$-form field equations of motion neither come from the variation of an action nor are they off-shell conserved on their own. Nevertheless the full equation is still on-shell consistent. Various generalizations, e.g. coupling them to $(d-3)$-forms, where 3-algebras play a prominent role, are also discussed. The method to construct these models also easily recovers the modified 3$d$ Yang-Mills theory obtained earlier and straightforwardly allows for higher derivative extensions.

Anomalies as Obstructions: from Dimensional Lifts to Swampland

We revisit the relation between the anomalies in four and six dimensions and the Chern-Simons couplings one dimension below. While the dimensional reduction of chiral theories is well-understood, the question which three and five-dimensional theories can come from a general circle reduction, and are hence liftable, is more subtle. We argue that existence of an anomaly cancellation mechanism is a necessary condition for liftability. In addition, the anomaly cancellation and the CS couplings in six and five dimensions respectively determine the central charges of string-like BPS objects that cannot be consistently decoupled from gravity, a.k.a. supergravity strings. Following the completeness conjecture and requiring that their worldsheet theory is unitary imposes bounds on the admissible theories. We argue that for the anomaly-free six-dimensional theories it is more advantageous to study the unitarity constraints obtained after reduction to five dimensions. In general these are slightly more stringent and can be cast in a more geometric form, highly reminiscent of the Kodaira positivity condition (KPC). Indeed, for the F-theoretic models which have an underlying Calabi-Yau threefold these can be directly compared. The unitarity constraints (UC) are in general weaker than KPC, and maybe useful in understanding the consistent models without F-theoretic realisation. We catalogue the cases when UC is more restrictive than KPC, hinting at more refined hidden structure in elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds with certain singularity structure.

Canonical maps and integrability in $T\bar T$ deformed 2d CFTs

We study $T\bar T$ deformations of 2d CFTs with periodic boundary conditions. We relate these systems to string models on $\mathbb{R}\times {S}^1\times{\cal M}$, where $\cal M$ is the target space of a 2d CFT. The string model in the light cone gauge is identified with the corresponding 2d CFT and in the static gauge it reproduces its $T\bar T$ deformed system. This relates the deformed system and the initial one by a worldsheet coordinate transformation, which becomes a time dependent canonical map in the Hamiltonian treatment. The deformed Hamiltonian defines the string energy and we express it in terms of the chiral Hamiltonians of the initial 2d CFT. This allows exact quantization of the deformed system, if the spectrum of the initial 2d CFT is known. The generalization to non-conformal 2d field theories is also discussed.

Comments on Anomalies in Supersymmetric Theories

We analyse the relation between anomalies in their manifestly supersymmetric formulation in superspace and their formulation in Wess-Zumino (WZ) gauges. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the solutions of the cohomology problem in the two formulations and that they are related by a particular choice of a superspace counterterm ("scheme"). Any apparent violation of $Q$-supersymmetry is due to an explicit violation by the counterterm which defines the scheme equivalent to the WZ gauge. It is therefore removable.

Anomalies, Conformal Manifolds, and Spheres

The two-point function of exactly marginal operators leads to a universal contribution to the trace anomaly in even dimensions. We study aspects of this trace anomaly, emphasizing its interpretation as a sigma model, whose target space M is the space of conformal field theories (a.k.a. the conformal manifold). When the underlying quantum field theory is supersymmetric, this sigma model has to be appropriately supersymmetrized. As examples, we consider in some detail N=(2,2) and N=(0,2) supersymmetric theories in d=2 and N=2 supersymmetric theories in d=4. This reasoning leads to new information about the conformal manifolds of these theories, for example, we show that the manifold is Kahler-Hodge and we further argue that it has vanishing Kahler class. For N=(2,2) theories in d=2 and N=2 theories in d=4 we also show that the relation between the sphere partition function and the Kahler potential of M follows immediately from the appropriate sigma models that we construct. Along the way we find several examples of potential trace anomalies that obey the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions, but can be ruled out by a more detailed analysis.

Invariants for minimal conformal supergravity in six dimensions

We develop a new off-shell formulation for six-dimensional conformal supergravity obtained by gauging the 6D ${\cal N} = (1, 0)$ superconformal algebra in superspace. This formulation is employed to construct two invariants for 6D ${\cal N} = (1, 0)$ conformal supergravity, which contain $C^3$ and $C\Box C$ terms at the component level. Using a conformal supercurrent analysis, we prove that these exhaust all such invariants in minimal conformal supergravity. Finally, we show how to construct the supersymmetric $F \Box F$ invariant in curved superspace.

Some aspects of holographic W-gravity

We use the Chern-Simons formulation of higher spin theories in three dimensions to study aspects of holographic W-gravity. Concepts which were useful in studies of pure bulk gravity theories, such as the Fefferman-Graham gauge and the residual gauge transformations, which induce Weyl transformations in the boundary theory and their higher spin generalizations, are reformulated in the Chern-Simons language. Flat connections that correspond to conformal and lightcone gauges in the boundary theory are considered.

Comments on the Algebraic Properties of Dilaton Actions

We study the relation between the dilaton action and sigma models for the Goldstone bosons of the spontaneous breaking of the conformal group. We argue that the relation requires that the sigma model is diffeomorphism invariant. The origin of the WZW terms for the dilaton is clarified and it is shown that in this approach the dilaton WZW term is necessarily accompanied by a Weyl invariant term proposed before from holographic considerations.

Conformal Anomalies in Hydrodynamics

We study the effect of conformal anomalies on the hydrodynamic description of conformal field theories in even spacetime dimensions. We consider equilibrium curved backgrounds characterized by a time-like Killing vector and construct a local low energy effective action that captures the conformal anomalies. Using as a special background the Rindler spacetime we derive a formula for the anomaly effect on the hydrodynamic pressure. We find that this anomalous effect is only due to the Euler central charge.

Constitutive relations, off shell duality rotations and the hypergeometric form of Born-Infeld theory

We review equivalent formulations of nonlinear and higher derivatives theories of electromagnetism exhibiting electric-magnetic duality rotations symmetry. We study in particular on shell and off shell formulations of this symmetry, at the level of action functionals as well as of equations of motion. We prove the conjecture that the action functional leading to Born-Infeld nonlinear electromagnetism, that is duality rotation invariant off shell and that is known to be a root of an algebraic equation of fourth order, is a hypergeometric function.

Entanglement and Thermal Entropy of Gauge Fields

We consider the universal logarithmic divergent term in the entanglement entropy of gauge fields in the Minkowski vacuum with an entangling sphere. Employing the mapping in arXiv:1102.0440, we analyze the corresponding thermal entropy on open Einstein universe and on the static patch of de Sitter. Using the heat kernel of the vector Laplacian we resolve a discrepancy between the free field calculation and the expected Euler conformal anomaly. The resolution suggests a modification of the well known formulas for the vacuum expectation value of the spin-1 energy-momentum tensor on conformally flat space-times.

On Scale and Conformal Invariance in Four Dimensions

We study the implications of scale invariance in four-dimensional quantum field theories. Imposing unitarity, we find that infinitely many matrix elements vanish in a suitable kinematical configuration. This vanishing is a nontrivial necessary condition for conformality. We provide an argument why this is expected to be a sufficient condition as well, thereby linking scale and conformal invariance in unitary theories. We also discuss possible exceptions to our argument.

Towards metric-like higher-spin gauge theories in three dimensions

We consider the coupling of a symmetric spin-3 gauge field to three-dimensional gravity in a second order metric-like formulation. The action that corresponds to an SL(3,R) x SL(3,R) Chern-Simons theory in the frame-like formulation is identified to quadratic order in the spin-3 field. We apply our result to compute corrections to the area law for higher-spin black holes using Wald's entropy formula.

On renormalization group flows and the a-theorem in 6d

We study the extension of the approach to the a-theorem of Komargodski and Schwimmer to quantum field theories in d=6 spacetime dimensions. The dilaton effective action is obtained up to 6th order in derivatives. The anomaly flow a_UV - a_IR is the coefficient of the 6-derivative Euler anomaly term in this action. It then appears at order p^6 in the low energy limit of n-point scattering amplitudes of the dilaton for n > 3. The detailed structure with the correct anomaly coefficient is confirmed by direct calculation in two examples: (i) the case of explicitly broken conformal symmetry is illustrated by the free massive scalar field, and (ii) the case of spontaneously broken conformal symmetry is demonstrated by the (2,0) theory on the Coulomb branch. In the latter example, the dilaton is a dynamical field so 4-derivative terms in the action also affect n-point amplitudes at order p^6. The calculation in the (2,0) theory is done by analyzing an M5-brane probe in AdS_7 x S^4. Given the confirmation in two distinct models, we attempt to use dispersion relations to prove that the anomaly flow is positive in general. Unfortunately the 4-point matrix element of the Euler anomaly is proportional to stu and vanishes for forward scattering. Thus the optical theorem cannot be applied to show positivity. Instead the anomaly flow is given by a dispersion sum rule in which the integrand does not have definite sign. It may be possible to base a proof of the a-theorem on the analyticity and unitarity properties of the 6-point function, but our preliminary study reveals some difficulties.

Thermodynamic instability of doubly spinning black objects

We investigate the thermodynamic stability of neutral black objects with (at least) two angular momenta. We use the quasilocal formalism to compute the grand canonical potential and show that the doubly spinning black ring is thermodynamically unstable. We consider the thermodynamic instabilities of ultra-spinning black objects and point out a subtle relation between the microcanonical and grand canonical ensembles. We also find the location of the black string/membrane phases of doubly spinning black objects.

Asymptotic symmetries of three-dimensional gravity coupled to higher-spin fields

We discuss the emergence of W-algebras as asymptotic symmetries of higher-spin gauge theories coupled to three-dimensional Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant. We focus on models involving a finite number of bosonic higher-spin fields, and especially on the example provided by the coupling of a spin-3 field to gravity. It is described by a SL(3) \times SL(3) Chern-Simons theory and its asymptotic symmetry algebra is given by two copies of the classical W_3-algebra with central charge the one computed by Brown and Henneaux in pure gravity with negative cosmological constant.

Quasilocal equilibrium condition for black ring

We use the conservation of the renormalized boundary stress-energy tensor to obtain the equilibrium condition for a general (thin or fat) black ring solution. We also investigate the role of the spatial stress in the thermodynamics of deformation within the quasilocal formalism of Brown and York and discuss the relation with other methods. In particular, we discuss the quantum statistical relation for the unbalanced black ring solution.

Spontaneous Breaking of Conformal Invariance and Trace Anomaly Matching

We argue that when conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken the trace anomalies in the broken and unbroken phases are matched. This puts strong constraints on the various couplings of the dilaton. Using the uniqueness of the effective action for the Goldstone supermultiplet for broken ${\cal N}=1$ superconformal symmetry the dilaton effective action is calculated.

String loop corrections to the universal hypermultiplet

We study loop corrections to the universal dilaton supermultiplet for type IIA strings compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds. We show that the corresponding quaternionic kinetic terms receive non-trivial one-loop contributions proportional to the Euler number of the Calabi-Yau manifold, while the higher-loop corrections can be absorbed by field redefinitions. The corrected metric is no longer Kahler. Our analysis implies in particular that the Calabi-Yau volume is renormalized by loop effects which are present even in higher orders, while there are also one-loop corrections to the Bianchi identities for the NS and RR field strengths.

Gravitational corrections in supersymmetric gauge theory and matrix models

Gravitational corrections in N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories are obtained from topological string amplitudes. We show how they are recovered in matrix model computations. This provides a test of the proposal by Dijkgraaf and Vafa beyond the planar limit. Both, matrix model and topological string theory, are used to check a conjecture of Nekrasov concerning these gravitational couplings in Seiberg-Witten theory. Our analysis is performed for those gauge theories which are related to the cubic matrix model, i.e. pure SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theory and N=2 U(N) SYM broken to N=1 via a cubic superpotential. We outline the computation of the topological amplitudes for the local Calabi-Yau manifolds which are relevant for these two cases.

On non-commutative N=2 super Yang-Mills

We discuss the Seiberg-Witten solution of the non-commutative N=2 U(N) SYM model. The solution is described in terms of the ordinary Seiberg-Witten curve of the SU(N) theory plus an additional free U(1). Hence, at the two-derivative approximation the theory flows to the ordinary commutative theory in the infra-red (k<1/sqrt(theta)). In particular, the center U(1) is free and it decouples from the other U(1)'s. In addition, no UV/IR mixing is found.

Nonlinear Self-Duality and Supersymmetry

We review self-duality of nonlinear electrodynamics and its extension to several Abelian gauge fields coupled to scalars. We then describe self-duality in supersymmetric models, both N = 1 and N = 2. The self-duality equations, which have to be satisfied by the action of any self-dual system, are found and solutions are discussed. One important example is the Born-Infeld action. We explain why the N = 2 supersymmetric actions proposed so far are not the correct world-volume actions for D3 branes in d = 6.

Classical $N=1$ and $N=2$ super W-algebras from a zero-curvature condition

Starting from superdifferential operators in an $N=1$ superfield formulation, we present a systematic prescription for the derivation of classical $N=1$ and $N=2$ super W-algebras by imposing a zero-curvature condition on the connection of the corresponding first order system. We illustrate the procedure on the first non-trivial example (beyond the $N=1$ superconformal algebra) and also comment on the relation with the Gelfand-Dickey construction of $W$-algebras.

Considerations of One-Modulus Calabi-Yau Compactifications: Picard-Fuchs Equations, Kähler Potentials and Mirror Maps

We consider Calabi-Yau compactifications with one Kähler modulus. Following the method of Candelas et al. we use the mirror hypothesis to solve the quantum theory exactly in dependence of this modulus by performing the calculation for the corresponding complex structure deformation on the mirror manifold. Here the information is accessible by techniques of classical geometry. It is encoded in the Picard-Fuchs differential equation which has to be supplemented by requirements on the global properties of its solutions.
