Surfaces of general type and sl_2-triples

The sl_2-triples play a fundamental role for the structure theory of Lie algebras, and representation theory in general. Here we investigate sl_2-triples of global vector fields on schemes X in positive characteristics p>0, and develop a general theory for actions of the corresponding height-one group scheme G=SL_2[F]. Sending a point to the Lie algebra of its stabilizer defines rational maps to various Grassmann varieties. For surfaces of general type, this yields fibrations in curves of genus g at least 2 over the projective line. Using properties of the corresponding moduli stack M_g, we prove that there are no smooth surfaces of general type with an sl_2-triple. On the other hand, employing Lefschetz pencils and Frobenius pullbacks we show that canonical surfaces of general type with such triples exist in abundance. In this connection, we classify the rational double points where the tangent sheaf is free or the evaluation pairing with Kähler differentials is surjetive, including characteristic two.

The resolution property holds away from codimension three

The purpose of this paper is to verify a conjecture of Gross under mild hypothesis: all reduced, separated, and excellent schemes have the resolution property away from a closed subset of codimension at least three. Our technique uses formal-local descent and the existence of affine flat neighborhoods to reduce the problem to constructing certain modules over commutative rings. Once in the category of modules we exhibit enough locally free sheaves directly, thereby establishing the resolution property for a specific class of algebraic spaces. A crucial step is showing it suffices to resolve a single coherent sheaf.

There is no Enriques surface over the integers

We show that there is no family of Enriques surfaces over the ring of integers. This extends non-existence results of Minkowski for families of finite étale schemes, of Tate and Ogg for families of elliptic curves, and of Fontaine and Abrashkin for families of abelian varieties and more general smooth proper schemes with certain restrictions on Hodge numbers. Our main idea is to study the local system of numerical classes of invertible sheaves. Among other things, our result also hinges on counting rational points, Lang's classification of rational elliptic surfaces in characteristic two, the theory of exceptional Enriques surfaces due to Ekedahl and Shepherd-Barron, some recent results on the base of their versal deformation, Shioda's theory of Mordell--Weil lattices, and an extensive combinatorial study for the pairwise interaction of genus-one fibrations.

Unirationality and geometric unirationality for hypersurfaces in positive characteristics

Building on work of Segre and Koll'ar on cubic hypersurfaces, we construct over imperfect fields of characteristic p\geq 3 particular hypersurfaces of degree p, which show that geometrically rational schemes that are regular and whose rational points are Zariski dense are not necessarily unirational. A likewise behaviour holds for certain cubic surfaces in characteristic p=2.

Points in the fppf topology

Using methods from commutative algebra and topos-theory, we construct topos-theoretical points for the fppf topology of a scheme. These points are indexed by both a geometric point and a limit ordinal. The resulting stalks of the structure sheaf are what we call fppf-local rings. We show that for such rings all localizations at primes are henselian with algebraically closed residue field, and relate them to AIC and TIC rings. Furthermore, we give an abstract criterion ensuring that two sites have point spaces with identical sobrification. This applies in particular to some standard Grothendieck topologies considered in algebraic geometry: Zariski, etale, syntomic, and fppf.
