Wild automorphisms of projective varieties, the maps which have no invariant proper subsets

Let $X$ be a projective variety and $σ$ a wild automorphism on $X$, i.e., whenever $σ(Z) = Z$ for a non-empty Zariski-closed subset $Z$ of $X$, we have $Z = X$. Then $X$ is conjectured to be an abelian variety with $σ$ of zero entropy (and proved to be so when ${\rm dim} \, X \le 2$) by Z. Reichstein, D. Rogalski and J. J. Zhang in their study of projectively simple rings. This conjecture has been generally open for more than a decade. In this note, we confirm this original conjecture when ${\rm dim} \, X \le 3$ and $X$ is not a Calabi-Yau threefold, and also show that $σ$ is of zero entropy when ${\rm dim} \, X \le 4$ and the Kodaira dimension $κ(X) \ge 0$.

Zero entropy automorphisms of compact Kähler manifolds and dynamical filtrations

We study zero entropy automorphisms of a compact Kähler manifold $X$. Our goal is to bring to light some new structures of the action on the cohomology of $X$, in terms of the so-called dynamical filtrations on $H^{1,1}(X, {\mathbb R})$. Based on these filtrations, we obtain the first general upper bound on the polynomial growth of the iterations $(g^m)^* \, {\circlearrowleft} \, H^2(X, {\mathbb C})$ where $g$ is a zero entropy automorphism, in terms of ${\rm dim} \, X$ only. We also give an upper bound for the (essential) derived length $\ell_{\rm ess}(G, X)$ for every zero entropy subgroup $G$, again in terms of the dimension of $X$ only. We propose a conjectural upper bound for the essential nilpotency class $c_{\rm ess}(G,X)$ of a zero entropy subgroup $G$. Finally, we construct examples showing that our upper bound of the polynomial growth (as well as the conjectural upper bound of $c_{\rm ess}(G,X)$) are optimal.

A surface in odd characteristic with discrete and non-finitely generated automorphism group

It was proved by Tien-Cuong Dinh and me that there is a smooth complex projective surface whose automorphism group is discrete and not finitely generated. In this paper, we will show that there is a smooth projective surface, birational to some K3 surface, such that the automorphism group is discrete and not finitely generated, over any algebraically closed field of odd characteristic except precisely an algebraic closure of the prime field.

Unirationality and geometric unirationality for hypersurfaces in positive characteristics

Building on work of Segre and Koll'ar on cubic hypersurfaces, we construct over imperfect fields of characteristic p\geq 3 particular hypersurfaces of degree p, which show that geometrically rational schemes that are regular and whose rational points are Zariski dense are not necessarily unirational. A likewise behaviour holds for certain cubic surfaces in characteristic p=2.

Isomorphic quartic K3 surfaces in the view of Cremona and projective transformations

We show that there is a pair of smooth complex quartic K3 surfaces $S_1$ and $S_2$ in ${\mathbf P}^3$ such that $S_1$ and $S_2$ are isomorphic as abstract varieties but not Cremona isomorphic. We also show, in a geometrically explicit way, that there is a pair of smooth complex quartic K3 surfaces $S_1$ and $S_2$ in ${\mathbf P}^3$ such that $S_1$ and $S_2$ are Cremona isomorphic, but not projectively isomorphic. This work is much motivated by several e-mails from Professors Tuyen Truong and János Kollár.

Non-liftability of automorphism groups of a K3 surface in positive characteristic

We show that a characteristic $0$ model $X_R\to \Spec R$, with Picard number $1$ over a geometric generic point, of a K3 surface in characteristic $p\ge 3$, essentially kills all automorphisms (Theorem 5.1). We show that there is an explicitely constructed automorphism on a supersingular K3 surface in characteristic $3$, which has positive entropy, the logarithm of a Salem number of degree $22$ (Theorem 6.4). In particular it does not lift to characteristic $0$. In addition, we show that in any large characteristic, there is an automorphism of a supersingular K3 which has positive entropy and does not lift to characteristic $0$ (Theorem 7.5).

On the unirationality of higher dimensional Ueno-type manifolds

We prove the unirationality of the Ueno-type manifold $X_{4,6}$. $X_{4,6}$ is the minimal resolution of the quotient of the Cartesian product $E(6)^4$, where $E(6)$ is the equianharmonic elliptic curve, by the diagonal action of a cyclic group of order 6 (having a fixed point on each copy of $E(6)$). We collect also other results, and discuss several related open questions.

A question of Doctor Malte Wandel on automorphisms of the punctural Hilbert schemes of K3 surfaces

We present a sufficient condition for the punctural Hilbert scheme of length two of a K3 surface with finite automorphism group to have automorphism group of infinite order in geometric terms (Theorem 2.1). We then give concrete examples (Theorem 1.2). We also discuss about Mori dream space (MDS) structures under an extermal crepant resolution (Theorems 1.2, 5.2, 4.1) from the viewpoint of automorphisms. These affirmatively answer a question of Doctor Malte Wandel.

Salem numbers in dynamics of Kähler threefolds and complex tori

Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold of dimension $k\leq 4$ and $f:X\rightarrow X$ a pseudo-automorphism. If the first dynamical degree $λ_1(f)$ is a Salem number, we show that either $λ_1(f)=λ_{k-1}(f)$ or $λ_1(f)^2=λ_{k-2}(f)$. In particular, if $\mbox{dim}(X)=3$ then $λ_1(f)=λ_2(f)$. We use this to show that if $X$ is a complex 3-torus and $f$ is an automorphism of $X$ with $λ_1(f)>1$, then $f$ has a non-trivial equivariant holomorphic fibration if and only if $λ_1(f)$ is a Salem number. If $X$ is a complex 3-torus having an automorphism $f$ with $λ_1(f)=λ_2(f)>1$ but is not a Salem number, then the Picard number of $X$ must be 0,3 or 9, and all these cases can be realized.

Simple abelian varieties and primitive automorphisms of null entropy of surfaces

We characterize simple complex abelian varieties and simple abelian surfaces in terms of primitivity of translation automorphisms. Applying this together with a result due to Diller and Favre, we then classify all primitive birational automorphisms with trivial first dynamical degree of smooth projective surfaces over an algebraically closed field of any characteristic.

Automorphism groups of Calabi-Yau manifolds of Picard number two

We prove that the automorphism group of an odd dimensional Calabi-Yau manifold of Picard number two is always a finite group. This makes a sharp contrast to the automorphism groups of K3 surfaces and hyperkähler manifolds and birational automorphism groups, as we shall see. We also clarify the relation between finiteness of the automorphism group (resp. birational automorphism group) and the rationality of the nef cone (resp. movable cone) for a hyperkähler manifold of Picard number two. We will also discuss a similar conjectual relation together with exsistence of rational curve, expected by the cone conjecture, for a Calabi-Yau threefold of Picard number two,

Birational automorphism groups and the movable cone theorem for Calabi-Yau manifolds of Wehler type via universal Coxeter groups

Thanks to the theory of Coxeter groups, we produce the first family of Calabi-Yau manifolds $X$ of arbitrary dimension $n$, for which $\Bir(X)$ is infinite and the Kawamata-Morrison movable cone conjecture is satisfied. For this family, the movable cone is explicitly described; it's fractal nature is related to limit sets of Kleinian groups and to the Apollonian Gasket. Then, we produce explicit examples of (biregular) automorphisms with positive entropy on some Calabi-Yau manifolds.

Explicit Examples of rational and Calabi-Yau threefolds with primitive automorphisms of positive entropy

We present the first explicit examples of a rational threefold and a Calabi-Yau threefold, admitting biregular automorphisms of positive entropy not preserving any dominant rational maps to lower positive dimensional varieties. The most crucial part is the rationality of the quotient threefold of a 3-dimensional torus of product type.

A simple remark on a flat projective morphism with a Calabi-Yau fiber

If a K3 surface is a fiber of a flat projective morphisms over a connected noetherian scheme over the complex number field, then any smooth connected fiber is also a K3 surface. Observing this, Professor Nam-Hoon Lee asked if the same is true for higher dimensional Calabi-Yau fibers. We shall give an explicit negative answer to his question as well as a proof of his initial observation.

Local structure of principally polarized stable Lagrangian fibrations

A holomorphic Lagrangian fibration is stable if the characteristic cycles of the singular fibers are of type $I_m, 1 \leq m <\infty,$ or $A_{\infty}$. We will give a complete description of the local structure of a stable Lagrangian fibration when it is principally polarized. In particular, we give an explicit form of the period map of such a fibration and conversely, for a period map of the described type, we construct a principally polarized stable Lagrangian fibration with the given period map. This enables us to give a number of examples exhibiting interesting behavior of the characteristic cycles.

On volume preserving complex structures on real tori

A basic problem in the classification theory of compact complex manifolds is to give simple characterizations of complex tori. It is well known that a compact Kähler manifold $X$ homotopically equivalent to a a complex torus is biholomorphic to a complex torus. The question whether a compact complex manifold $X$ diffeomorphic to a complex torus is biholomorphic to a complex torus has a negative answer due to a construction by Blanchard and Sommese. Their examples have however negative Kodaira dimension, thus it makes sense to ask the question whether a compact complex manifold $X$ with trivial canonical bundle which is homotopically equivalent to a complex torus is biholomorphic to a complex torus. In this paper we show that the answer is positive for complex threefolds satisfying some additional condition, such as the existence of a non constant meromorphic function.
