On the rationality problem for low degree hypersurfaces

We show that a very general hypersurface of degree d at least 4 and dimension at most $(d+1)2^{d-4}$ over a field of characteristic different from 2 does not admit a decomposition of the diagonal; hence, it is neither stably nor retract rational, nor $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected. Similar results hold in characteristic 2 under a slightly weaker degree bound. This improves earlier results by the second named author and Moe.

Equality in the Bogomolov--Miyaoka--Yau inequality in the non-general type case

We classify all minimal models X of dimension n, Kodaira dimension n-1 and with vanishing Chern number $c_1^{n-2}c_2(X)=0$. This solves a problem of Kollár. Completing previous work of Kollár and Grassi, we also show that there is a universal constant $ε>0$ such that any minimal threefold satisfies either $c_1c_2=0$ or $-c_1c_2>ε$. This settles completely a conjecture of Kollár.

Torsion orders of Fano hypersurfaces

We find new lower bounds on the torsion orders of very general Fano hypersurfaces over (uncountable) fields of arbitrary characteristic. Our results imply that unirational parametrizations of most Fano hypersurfaces need to have enormously large degree. Our results also hold in characteristic two, where they solve the rationality problem for hypersurfaces under a logarithmic degree bound, thereby extending a previous result of the author from characteristic different from two to arbitrary characteristic.

The construction problem for Hodge numbers modulo an integer

For any positive integer m and any dimension n, we show that any n-dimensional Hodge diamond with values in Z/mZ is attained by the Hodge numbers of an n-dimensional smooth complex projective variety. As a corollary, there are no polynomial relations among the Hodge numbers of n-dimensional smooth complex projective varieties besides the ones induced by the Hodge symmetries, which answers a question raised by Kollár in 2012.

On the construction problem for Hodge numbers

For any symmetric collection of natural numbers h^{p,q} with p+q=k, we construct a smooth complex projective variety whose weight k Hodge structure has these Hodge numbers; if k=2m is even, then we have to impose that h^{m,m} is bigger than some quadratic bound in m. Combining these results for different weights, we solve the construction problem for the truncated Hodge diamond under two additional assumptions. Our results lead to a complete classification of all nontrivial dominations among Hodge numbers of Kaehler manifolds.
